I picked up a brand new i7 930 for $245 bucks on eBay. So, of course, I had to spend another $1200 to make the $40 I saved a FSX computer. This will be the main computer for my cockpit.
Put it together Friday night and spent all day Saturday OCing it to 3.8 GHz. I bought a Thermalake Frio cooler to cool the CPU. After I dialed in the voltages to keep her steady and cool, I spent all day Sunday loading FSX and the support programs. No aircraft yet, except default.
I was concerned that something was't right at first. I used both Prime95 and OCCT to test the unit. Before getting the temps right I was hitting 80C where OCCT would shut down. Afterward, the numbers were staying in the high 50's.
So, I loaded up FSX and pushed all the sliders to the right. I loaded the Airbus at La Gaurdia, Y-F4 to altitude then set the autopilot to hold altitude. With basic FSX, running in windows mode and made it small enough so I could see the core temps program, the computer ran on mostly core 1 with it hitting 70% load. I got 17-30 FPS.
I then loaded Acceleration and redid the test. Now all four cores were running, none much over 50% and the temps remained in the low 50 degree mark. I was pushing 30-40 FPS.
Specs:
CPU Intel i7 930 running at 3.8 GHtz
MB Asus P6TD Deluxe
Cooler Thermalake Frio
PS Corsair TX 750 watt
Memory OCZ 3G1600L DDR3
GPU HIS ATI Radeon HD 5850
Drive WD Raptor 10,000 rpm 300 GBs
Case Cooler Master CM 690II
OS Win 7 64 bit
Next I need to find a window's 7 tweak guide for FSX.
