This Friday and Saturday the Dutch airforce held it's open days at the largest operational base in the Netherlands, Gilze-Rijen (Ry-en) which celebrates it's 100th anniversary this year.
The last few decades it is the home of our helicopter force so plenty of those present!
One of the most impressive helicopters for me is this Czech Mil Mi-24 Hind:

An usual visitor is this Slovak Let L-410:

One of the most impressive and noisiuest displays of the weekend, a British Eurofighter Typhoon; when it comes to agility this thing is in a class of its own!:

The traditional show after the noon break is the simulated airfield assault with every aircraft in the Dutch inventory participating. Lots of helicopters of course!:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a262/Ferror/GilzeRijen%202010/IMG_4894.jpg
And then the Apache was put through its paces. It's not everyday you see an Apache do loops, rolls, hammerheads and deploying flares!:

Great pictures, beyond the Canadian Forces we don't get any foreign display teams at the shows around here.
I really like the shots of the Hind.
OT:On one of the photo forums I read there was a discussion about the esthetics of prop blur vs. having the motion 'frozen.'
I prefer a bit of blur but I was curious what other people thought.

I prefer it too, but with a 400 mm lens it is very hard to get both motion blur on the prop and a sharp photo, at least without using a tripod. I tried it on Friday for a bit but didn't get great results. For Saturday I went for sharp photos and sacrificed a bit of motion blur.

Nice set, Ferry :). Heard from another Belgian spotter that he caught a cold because of the showers...nice shot of our very own Belgian Air Component (former Belgian Air Force) F-16 demo...love the way the Gripen lift off the runway. Lovely Albatros too!
Prop-blur fan here, too :). How many stops does the IS give you, Ferry ? Two ? Three ?

It's amazing to see how unprepared people come to these events even when the weather prediction is quite clear on what to expect... We always travel with at least an umbrella, full rain suit and plenty of clothes but also with sun tan lotion etc. Most weekends we need all of those!

About two or three Joris; at 400 mm that means I would still need at least 1/160 or 1/250 to get a sharp photo which is still not enough to give a lot of motion blur. Also I'm using 'mode 2' which disables the IS in the panning direction.

I'm a fan of prop blur too....but realise just how difficult it is at 400mm. I reckon you got it just spot on with those helo shots. ;)

It helps to get up really early.. ;)
Due to the busy traffic on Friday we arrived somewhat late and had to take a bus from the parking lot to the base too; on Saturday we arrived earlier (Less traffic) and were directed to a different parking lot right next to the base. We got a nice spot at the fence at the beginning of the runway more than an hour before the show started. Attendence was pretty good this year with 100,000 visitors on Friday and 150,000 on Saturday.

Now this shows real character, keep taking photos even when heaven breaks open :salute: Nice pictures Ferry, looks like you had a great time as well. I also visited the show on both days, and despite the couple of heavy rain showers Saturday was the better day after all. I'm still working through all my photos, almost done with the Friday. You mind if I post a couple of pictures in this topic? I'd like to share them here if it's ok...

Character? Nah, just a full rain suit, a cover for the camera (Improvised from an old plastic bag) and two umbrellas above and two in front. A very nicely improvised shelter for three. :d
Overall the weather on Saturday was better for photos but it was colder than it was on Friday. The shows on Friday were better (Except for the Lancaster!) I think, just a shame about the low cloud base.
Please go ahead and post your photos Vincent! :)

What's the trick for catching those close passes? :kilroy:
I invariably wind up with just a single A/C or else 2 tails...
JorisVandenBerghe
June 23rd, 2010, 12:28
From my experience, I'd say it's all about timing and using the burst mode (like Ferry's 7D, doing 8 fps). Also you should shoot using both eyes...and as soon as you see them closing in on each other, 'open fire' :). It also helps if you are used to the display routine of some teams and get the 'feel' of the display, I think.

I just got a 7D myself and it's a whole new world with that beast of an autofocus system and burst mode.
I've had a blast shooting baseball with it.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/uncw_alum/sets/72157624191408207/show/
But I've realized I need to get a faster zoom than the 70-300 for under the lights.
Thanks for the tips, I'll try that at the airshow next year. :salute:

Those close passes are indeed tricky to catch on 'film'!
I try to track the aircraft coming from the right with the camera and keep my left eye open for the aircraft coming from the left. At the moment they are close I press and hold the shutter. Even with the 8fps of the 7D it is possible to miss a good pass though!

That's the same technique I use as well, but it depends on some good luck as well. I use the 50D which is a bit slower than the 7D. From the whole weekend that Red Arrows crossing was the only one I got. For the best crossing pictures it is best to sit at the center of the displayline, then you'll be sure they cross in front of you. Below some more pictures, now from the Saturday show.
