Ickie - the first, super shiny pic I'd presented is a 'fake' and should be declared 'out of bounds' - this was rendered from GMAX with the free raytracer YafRay (if we're lucky, then perhaps FS2008 or later will give us reflections that good) - only my latter pics were taken as screenies inside the sim ;)
My favourite so far is the 'Fleet defender' scenario from Greenhouse :)

Hey All,
A simple question. Why do screenies change so much from what they look like on my computer AFTER (not before) saving them as jpgs (90 quality) to what I get when I view them from the website I uploaded them to via my browser? Mostly they get darker but not always. Sometimes you get banding (see my BE-12 aircraft carrier pic for example) which wasn't in my original screenie or in the jpg I saved it as. Just curious.
Take Care! -Ed-
CybrSlydr
June 8th, 2005, 17:41
It could also be the resizing. I know the quality of my pics REALLY goes down from when I take them at 16X12 and have to resize to 800X600 or even 640x480.
That'd be my guess.
sssmokin

Well, I may as well toss in a couple. Hard to top Henry though.........LOL.
Ferry_vO
June 8th, 2005, 17:49
It's mostly quality loss, Ed.
You can't expect to shrink a picture down from a 3 Mb bitmap to a 60kb JPEG without quality loss !
I use PSP to edit screenies, and it allows me to set the compression ratio for JPEGs. I try to keep it around 15, with a resolution of 750x600 (original size 1280x1024) . If my picture still exceeds the 100Kb limit, I raise the compressionlevel to 20 max, then I start lowering the resolution.
I use the 'sharpen' tool to get a better picture.

Hey All,
Cybr, Ferror It appears your missing what I mean. I know resizing has a impact but I'm talking about after resizing and one sharpening pass and saving. I mean the actual file uploaded! If I view on my computer the actual file that I uploaded - it looks different than when I view the same file from the website I uploaded it to via a browser. As I indicated darker, sometimes banded and sometimes blurred in my experience. I was just wondering why. This should be an absolute apples to apples comparison. For example Ferror the first screenie in your post before this one to me is black. I bet it wasn't as seen by you when you uploaded it.

Same here. My shots will look quite good on my PC, and be well within the file size limitations, but when I actually upload them, they degrade hideously. Not just here, either - everywhere else I upload, too.

Thought I'd toss in a couple here. The Starship is proof that several elements can be put together to make one terrific plane - Mike's model, Jeff's shine mod, my paint, and what you can't see is a panel by Ken Mitchel (originally released with Mike's FS2002 Starship).
