Always wanted to try a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster, the effect of which is like having your brains smashed in by a slice of lemon, wrapped around a large gold brick. I would definitely need this afterwards:

Douglas Adams was the same age as me...such a shame he passed on at 49.

Be sure to read Adams' ultimate work; Last Chance To See. It's a chronicle of his voyages around the globe to see endangered animals, before they went extinct.

i have never read the book, but the movie was, without question, the most retarded thing i have ever had the displeasure to sit through.

The books (all 4 of the trilogy) were hilarious. The movie, well, I found it left a LOT, LOT, LOT to be desired. Of course, when I heard they were going to attempt a Hitchhiker's movie, I didn't have very high hopes to begin with. How in the world would they be able to fit all they needed to in a 2 hour movie? Answer = they didn't........

I recommend looking for the BBC series. A little dated and not as CGI 'cool' as the movie but much more in depth in relation to the book.

So says the babelfish. BTW did any of you ever get to play Starship Titanic. It was a 'myst' style game made years ago with Douglas Adams/pythonesque humor. Quite good graphics for the day.

Cheers

The seven-part British TV production was far, far better than the movie. Being longer, it stayed nearer to the book's script. And the cheap, fake props and monsters made it all the better.

The books were all a hoot, cheezy, how can you possibly have a sense of humor and have not read Douglas Adams' books? This man was funnier, punier, and more outrageous than the Pythons.

By far the best HHGTTG is the BBC radio series which came even before the TV one. I certainly recommend it as IIRC Adams himself wrote the adaptation.

you can also listen to Adams reading all the books on CD--or was it tape...

I cant remember the publisher, but I got them from my library

Unlike many authors, he reads his work very well.

"it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young."
"Why, what did she tell you?"

The true fan will want one of these sets, depending on where you live and how cheap you can get it. I got the UK version for £16 last year. Price is now more than double, but I'd happily pay it, if I didn't already own it. It's the only radio show I've ever purchased on CD, but I could listen to it again, and again, and again.

However for those of you who don't want to actually buy the thing and are happy enough to listen to low quality mp3 versions, here you go:

I can see Panther reading that and thinking... "hmmm... I think I must try that...."

Marvin is apparently afflicted with severe depression and boredom, in part because he has a "brain the size of a planet" which he is seldom able to use. Indeed, the true horror of Marvin's existence is that no task he could be given would occupy even the tiniest fraction of his vast intellect. Marvin claims he is 50,000 times more intelligent than a human, (or 30 billion times more intelligent than a live mattress) though this is, if anything, a vast underestimation. When kidnapped by the bellicose Krikkit robots and tied to the interfaces of their intelligent war computer, Marvin simultaneously manages to plan the entire planet's military strategy, solve "all of the major mathematical, physical, chemical, biological, sociological, philosophical, etymological, meteorological and psychological problems of the Universe except his own, three times over," and compose a number of lullabies. He seemed to find this last the hardest, and only one, "How I Hate the Night", is known.

Christ I love Marvin.

I still remember 'flying lessons', about running real fast, trip, then just before hitting the ground become distracted and you'll find yourself flying.

Never tried it tho.
