Woooooo! Awesome!! Thanks P.! GREAT find! This will be helpful for me. Recently, I was just telling one of my friends about my desire to splurge on a new lens....I was thinking of going with this one:
NIKON AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200MM *VR* IF-ED 18-200 MM LENS

But now that I can play with the lenses simulator...I might just change my mind :)

Thanks for sharing P.!:wavey:

Now if that isn't neat! Good tool to compare lengths even for non-Nikon shooters.

BTW...if you slide the zoom in and out on the second photo, the gal on the bridge has a serious case of the fidgets! :d

Avoid the superzooms, C9G! More focal length range = more compromises in image quality.

Tamron has a tool like this too. I've used it many times. http://www.tamron.com/lenses/learning_center/tools/focal-length-comparison.php

I agree with Kiwikat here - Lots of folks at the Nikon Cafe' like the AF-S 70-300 VR II--> http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Camera-Lenses/2161/AF-S-VR-Zoom-NIKKOR-70-300mm-f%252F4.5-5.6G-IF-ED.html

Exactly what I would recommend - the 70-300 is a bargain if you know what you get for the price! You'll have to stop it down a bit on the long end to get maximum sharpness out of it, though.

Unless you're paying a lot (like Canon's 28-300L IS USM, which despite its high price is not even that great) you will certainly sacrifice optical performance for the convenience when using a superzoom lens. They may appear very nice and convenient at first (I was very close to buying one myself a year and a half ago), but it's far better to cover the focal length ranges with two or three lenses.

For instance, I use an 18-70, 55-200 (both are kitlenses and perform pretty good if you know how cheap they are) and my 70-400, so effectively I have a range from 18mm all the way up to 400mm...sort of like having a superzoom camera with a 22x optical zoom range, but with far higher quality. In the future I'll only use my DSLR for my aviation photography, and a NEX-camera (EVIL* camera) will take care of the other, more general photography.

* Electronic viewfinder interchangeable lens: e.g. Oly Pen EP-1, EP-2, EPL-1, GF-1, NEX-3, NEX-5.
