Product Description
Built only for FSX SP1, SP2 and Acceleration (no planned version for FS9), the P36 Hawk has a highly detailed virtual cockpit complete with 3d gauges and authentic textures.
With animations present and correct, including custom sound recordings also adds to the immersion as you open up the throttle and watch how the self shadowing, bump mapping and spectacular highlights bring any of the 8 carefully selected paint schemes to life.
Introduction
The Curtiss P-36 Hawk, also known as the Curtiss Hawk Model 75, was a U.S.-built fighter aircraft of the 1930s. A contemporary of the Hawker Hurricane and Messerschmitt Bf 109, it was one of the first of a new generation of combat aircraft—a sleek monoplane design making extensive use of metal in its construction and powered by a powerful piston engine.
The P-36 saw only limited combat with the United States Army Air Forces but was extensively used by the French Air Force and also by British Commonwealth and Chinese air units.
The P-36 has been designed to take advantage of all the graphical features FSX has to offer, including fully-custom specular shine textures, high resolution bump mapping, self-shading and 3D sound cones.

I can't make it switch off just one magneto either, not reliably anyway. It's strange because the fuel selector is another click & drag rotary switch and works perfectly. I've asked the question over at Product Support, but it's a small niggle in a magnificent model.

Not complaining, just saying it kind of takes out the realism a little...
It is truly gorgeous to fly, and very easy to do so. it is light, responsive and very aerobatic!!!
Well done Vertigo!

Ive played with the mag switch and I'm able to switch to either and it works as good as the fuel selector. We'll do some more testing and see what the problem maybe.
Mag switch appears to work here as well.
I love this plane! I've always liked the lines of the P-36. Just a clean, right-looking aeroplane. You VS people have done a fine job.

Great work on the Hawk, is there a paintkit released together with it?
My interest in this aircraft is to get it repainted to Norwegian colors as used during the early years of WW2.

There is a paintkit due to be released, but it's not included in the model package, I think Dean is having problems with the site. http://downloads.flightsimfiles.com/category/251.

Hi,
Drool,Drool,Drool,Drool. . .
This looks amazing!:salute: When you compare it to the A2A P-40 in one of the screenshots posted it just blows the A2A P-40 right out of the sky! (pun intended)
Just one small question: No attitude indicator? would have been interesting intercepting the enemy in IFR even with that instrument?
Cheers,

Ah.... now I can Deano. I was just using the mouse roller, rather than click and drag.
You're right, it does work with click & drag, it's just that four out of five times I shut the engine off when I don't mean to. It doesn't seem as controllable as the fuel, but maybe my technique is faulty - it's been said....
I'm a fan of the left click / right click convention for rotary controls (as perfectly realised in this VC with the cowl flaps control and heading indicator adjuster) or the mouse wheel.
Anyway, it takes nothing away from what is my favourite FSX add-on of the year so far.

You know what's cool about this plane? No artificial horizon! I flew into a cloud the other day, and automatically went for the AH gauge... (*...gulp...*) Then it was, "ok, no problem, I read this in a book once... needle, ball, VSI, altitude, airspeed. No problem. The needle tells me if I'm turning. Or is that is I'm banking? Then step on the ball to center it, but if I'm turning... compass! Ok, watch the altimeter too, and airspeed, and VSI. Dammit the needle still says I'm turning, ok wait..." Then I came out of the cloud. :icon_lol:

Nice paint! Just some imputs from a Norwegian; 439 was brand new in 1940 and should not have a worn look, The Norwegain Army air Force used a special font (I'm making them by hand for my version of 439), the dimensions for the Flag stripes are also a bit of.

The history is full of ”what if’s”, one of these is the story about the Norwegian Army Air Forces order for 24 Curtiss Hawk 75A-6 in 1939. Years of neglect of the armed forces by the Norwegian Labour party finally gave away to the realisation that <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:country-region w:st="on">Norway</st1:country-region> was in no state to defend itself as war began to lurk in <st1:place w:st="on">Europe</st1:place>. By the spring of 1940, 19 of these modern Hawks had arrived in crates with 6 of them having been put together. Sadly they were not yet operational by the time of the German attack on <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Norway</st1:place></st1:country-region> on the 9th of April and just sat in their hangars at Kjeller air base. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
A fighter force of 24 Hawk 75’s would have been a potent deterrent against air attacks over southern Norway because of the range involved they would just have faced multi engine fighter aircraft. Even the small force of Gloster Gladiators which were operational at the time did quite good against the Bf-110 on the 9th of April. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
That was not the end of <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Norway</st1:place></st1:country-region>’s association with the Curtiss fighter, 36 Cyclone-powered Hawk 75A-8s were also ordered. Most of this batch was delivered as advanced trainers to "Little Norway" near <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Toronto</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">Ontario</st1:State>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Canada</st1:country-region></st1:place>, a Norwegian training base established by the exile government to train aircrews for the Norwegian squadrons serving under the RAF. Still later, they were resold to the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region> and redesignated as P-36G.
<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
This repaint is of the first of the Norwegian Hawks, 75A-6 “439”. Pictures of this aircraft exists from the spring of 1940.

Very nice Bruce! I presume this repaint depicts the aircraft flown by S/C Johannès Cucumel. When it is, it should have a white seven on a black circle at the tail and the mourning band, which all aircrafts from 4th squadron had to remember the death of the French WW-I ace Captain Fernand Bonneton in 1922.
Cheers,

Looks really good Bruce, although I already enjoy your other repaints I'm really looking forward to this one as Joannes Cucumel was active above my country during the German invasion of the low countries.
However I would like to make one small remark: the red-and-silver "Gypaète Égyptien" (Egyptian Vulture) of SPA 153 has the "Omega" symbol in its claw. Therefore the middle should be open and not a white disk.
The Omega symbol should be black as shown in the picture of Joannes Cucumel in front of this particular plane.
Cucumel scored 3 victories with this aircraft after the 20th of May he was transferred GC 2/9 in which squadron he flew the Bloch MB 152. In total he scored 9 victories, all against the Germans during the Battle of France.
Cheers,
Huub

Bruce,
If you're referring to those 4 camo paints I posted ealier, they are actually the same plane with variations on the colors used...pick the color scheme you like the best...that scheme was applied to aircraft that were used during US Army War Games here in the States during 1939.

Bruce,
Perhaps this site can help you: http://www.jpsmodell.de/katalog/jpsusww2_e.htm
According my information the used colours for these schemes were colour 25 till 35. The 69 was most probably sprayed in white 25 - sand 26 and dark green 30 or dark olive drab 31. Which in my opinion look a bit different than the colours you used.
Some aircraft were sprayed in a very "kinky scheme" using the colours white -25, sand 26 - Dark Blue 29 - Dark purple 32 and Neutral grey 33!
The water based camouflage paint was sprayed on the aircraft, however Curtiss used pre-cut masks, which resulted in quite sharp colour demarcations, as is visible on most pictures of these aircrafts.
When you need the "Eagle marking" just send me a PM as I have it in Photoshop format already, as I wanted to use it on the ex-donationware P-36.
Cheers,
Huub

For those who don't know who Lt Edmond Marin le Meslée was:
Lt Edmond Marin le Meslée was the top scoring French Ace during the battle of France. He had 16 confirmed kills and 4 probables! During the armistice he remained in the French Vichy Air Force and was transfered to North Africa. After Operation Torch he joined the Free French. In February 1945 he was shot down by German flak, while flying a P-47 and was killed when his aircraft exploded.
He scored his first kill at January 11th 1940, the rest of his victories were made between May 12th and June 10th! All his victories were made in a Curtiss H-75,

I know it is a bit of nitpicking, but as the Vertigo model depicts the French H-75 version, the aircraft was actually equipped with 4 FN-Browning 7.5mm machine guns. FN (Fabrique National d'Herstal) was a Belgium arms manufacturer, which already worked together with John Browning since 1898.
A not well known fact is that the well known British .303 Browning aircraft machine gun introduced in the late 1930s and used in World War II was actually a license-built FN Browning design and not a "Colt-Browning" as often referred to.
The Fins used ex-French H-75 Hawks, which were sold to them by the Germans, so the Hawks used by the Fins most probably still had the original French FN-Browning machine guns.

As Finland fought against Russia until deep in 1944 and was regarded an ally of Germany for most of WW-II. Therefore I don't think replacement by Russian or American weapons is very logical. In 1944 when Finland made peace with Russia through the Moscow Armistice, they were forced to give up most of their army. So if the machine guns were replaced, replacement of the original 7.5mm guns by German MG 17 machine guns is perhaps more likely.

The Finnish Hawks were initially armed with either four or six 0.295 in (7.5 mm) machine guns. While sufficient during the early phase of the Continuation War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuation_War), the increasing speeds and armor of Soviet aircraft soon showed this armament was not powerful enough. From 1942, the State Aircraft Factory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Aircraft_Factory) replaced the fuselage machine guns with either one or two 0.5 in (12.7 mm) Colt machine guns and installed two or four 0.303 in (7.7 mm) Browning machine guns in each wing. The 0.5 in (12.7 mm) Berezin UB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berezin_UB) or LKk/42 heavy machine guns were also used.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-36_Hawk#cite_note-BackwoodsFAF-7) The installation of heavier armament did not change the very good flying characteristics of the fighter, but the armament was much more effective against Soviet planes. The Finnish Hawks were also equipped with Revi 3D or C/12D gunsight

Yep Peter, your right. As Wikipedia is an "open source" I'm always a bit careful. But it is mentioned in the book "Suomen ilmavoimien Historia Curtiss Hawk 75 A" as well.
Perhaps it is just me, but I still think it is a bit weird that Colt .50 machine guns obviously were delivered, while Finland was at war with Russia, which was at that time a full ally from the USA........ And that at the same time these American guns were mounted, German gun sights and radios (FuG 7a) were installed as well!
BTW in the same book I also learned the Cu-557 was a H-75 A6 originally delivered to Norway. So it might even have had Colt-Browning guns already.
Cheers,
Huub

It was not weird at all to find American and or British weapons in Finnish aircraft during ww2. During the winter war in 1939 both countries sympathized with <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Finland</st1:place></st1:country-region> and supplied military equipment. So the 12.7 mm Colt should be readily available to the Fins during ww2 for use in aircraft as the Hawk 75. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
Some more info I found on a Finnish site:<o:p></o:p>
A-1: 2 fuselage and 2 wing mounted 7.5 mm FN-Browning MGs; from the end of 1942: 1 or 2 fuselage mounted 12.7 mm Colt, Berezin UB or LKK/42 MGs and 2 wing mounted 7.7 mm Browning MGs<o:p></o:p>
A-2/4: 1 or 2 fuselage and 4 wing mounted 7.5 mm FN-Browning MGs; from 1942: 2 fuselage mounted 12.7 mm Colt, Berezin UB or LKK/42 MGs and 4 wing mounted 7.7 mm Browning MGs<o:p></o:p>
A-6 (former Norwegian): 2 fuselage and 2 wing mounted 7.9 mm Colt MGs; from 1942: 1 or 2 fuselage mounted 12.7 mm Colt, Berezin UB or LKK/42 MGs and 2 wing mounted 7.7 mm Browning MGs
<o:p></o:p>
Basically this tells use that the Fins put all sort of heavy MGs into their Hawks, starting in late 1942.
Regards
Jens-Ole<o:p></o:p>

It is a bit weird, but I am a sort of intrigued by this subject. Therefore I did some further reading. The Berezin UB gun were acquired on the same way the Klimov engines for the MS.406 were obtained.
I still couldn't find how the Fins got hold of their American guns, but the Twin Wasp Junior engines for the license built Fokker D.XXI fighters were bought via Sweden.

Love all the repaints and such, but wish these "just released" threads would have more "review" type replies, i.e., how does it handle, what do it's handling qualities compare to, etc., etc.
If I buy it, it's not going to be for the repaints, but for how it flies, how the VC works, etc.
Not criticizing, just stating my interests, I guess.
(So, anyone got a review they'd like to post? I can really only afford one addon this month, should it be this one?) :kilroy:

Tracy as I have been involved in this project as beta tester, I'm perhaps a bit biased. But this is something I wrote to a friend and therefore it should be my honest personal opinion.
The model is very nice. It looks great in spot view and at least on my humble system framerates as quite decent. I have the framerate locked at 20 fps and this can be easily maintained. I dislike the pilot model and the model is a bit too glossy to my taste. Personally I prefer the replacement textures by Bruce Martin above the original textures done by Dan Dunn. Due to the complex texture lay-out, stretching, different angles and the fact that several part have a different scale the model is difficult to repaint. Some repaints are even impossible to do!
The model is a very close model of the "Fighters collection" H-75. Therefore it isn't a real H-75 nor a real P-36. The Fighters collection claim their H-75 is a H-75 A1. However there are many American parts used during the rebuild and some parts were not introduced before the H-75 A3 version. Some parts which are used on the Fighters collection H-75 are "borrowed from a P-40 and were even never used on the P-36.
Therefore the Vertigo model is neither fish nor flesh, like the "Fighters collection" H-75.
There is something really odd with the flight model. According to what I have read, the P-36/H-75 was an easy aircraft to fly. The model is quite easy to fly as well. However when I look at the CoG this is way to far to the back! It is extremely hard to get the model to stall and when it stalls it is almost too easy to restore normal flight. Performance however is quite close to the real thing.
Vertigo/Dean Greasley is planning to bring out a more complex version of this P-36/H-75, with engine failures etc. Therefore the controls in this model are rather simple. Most switches don't work and apart from a functioning constant speed prop there isn't much exiting in the cockpit. Although it sure looks extremely nice.
There are several reasons why I prefer this model above the A2A P-40. Most important; the P-36 is much easier to fly and flies most probably much more realistic. When a pilot should put as much effort in flying an aircraft as needed in the A2A P-40 their wasn't much time left to fight the enemy!
The final verdict:
The Vertigo P-36/H-75 is in my opinion not in the same league as the Classics-Hangar FW-190s and recent A2A products. The flight model needs improvement on some minor points and the model is not a fully authentic H-75 nor a P-36 and hard to repaint. However the model is very nice details detailed and looks very well. So although there is quite some room for improvement the model definitely scores a 7 out of 10.
Cheers,
Huub

Without any doubt "jongblad" and "oudblad". The triangles on the wings are a bit small, but I assume that's because the textures stretches a bit over the rudder. But are you sure the Dutch Hawks had these triangles on their wings?

it gets worse...
I found the same pic but even better quality, and indeed, no triangles on the wings, but I also see I have the camouflage pattern all wrong. I adopted the british pattern for lack of good pics, but no longer....and the black edges on the triangles are much thicker..
OK, back to the drawingboard....

I wonder about the underside though, do you have any pics?
edit: the plot thickens...it seems they were bare metal below!

Jan Kees, I haven't been able to find a picture of a Dutch H-75 which clearly shows the underside. However based on pictures from Buffalos and Curtiss CW22 aircrafts I assume they had orange triangles on the lower side of the wings. These should be in the middle from the wings and not at the location where the British had their nationality markings.
The black border around the orange nationality marking was 10 cm in width.
I hope this helps,
Cheers,
Huub

There we are once more..
After some additional research:
The Hawks were originally delivered in bare metal, and equipped with 6 orange triangles and rudder.
After the occupation of the Netherlands in may 1940, it was decided to camouflage all dutch aircraft in the East Indies, starting with the Glenn Martin Bombers.
After experimenting, it was decided to use a camouflage pattern in two colours of dark green, called 'jongblad' (young leaves) and 'oudblad' (old leaves), with light grey below.
The Hawks received a similar coat of camouflage paint, covering the top surfaces, and the entire fuselage, aa well as the undersides of the wingtips and the leading edge of the wings. The underside was left bare metal. The nationality markings (6 orange triangles and rudder) remained as they were for the moment, but between september and october 1940, the markings on the rudder and the top of the wings were overpainted.
So, there we have it, I believe.
After october 1940, the aircraft may have looked something like this:

I tweaked the Brazilian a bit more, and started on a new british version, but those distortions around the hatch drive me nuts...
