This shader mod appears to fix the performance loss in clouds present on (some) ATI powered systems.

Just to let you know that your fix works for me : I've got a 5970 and the main different is that everything remains smooth even in heavy Wx...
Prior to your shader fix my GPU always stuttered in those conditions...

File Description:
Replacement ShadersHLSL folder which has been updated to compile shaders using the newer Shader Model 3.0. Originally, FSX was released using OLD Shader Model 1.1 and 2.0 for backward compatibility reasons to support old hardware, however, newer video cards are designed and optimized to execute last generation DX9 shaders (SM3.0) and in some cases improve performance considerably, specially for ATI Radeon cards which are known to have problems rendering fog effects in FSX. This mod provides both an IMAGE QUALITY Enhancement, while at the same time providing much better performance.

Finally a level playing field for NVidia and ATI, eh?

Thank you so much for this. I have two crossfired 5770's and my FSX runs like poop compared to other peoples here and I was starting to get a complex. I will have a bash with this and see how it goes. Again, many thanks.

Thanks for the heads up. Time to give it a go I think!

Doesn't seem to make much difference with my ATI Radeon HD 3870. Clouds still very much dragging down FPS to unflyable levels.

No difference on the HD4850 that I can see...well have to bench test it I guess

I've got a 5770 (I think, 5700 series anyway) on Win7 x64, and under Dx10 I think it has improved things. Though I may be dreaming. Getting 80-100 fps with the RV8 anyhow!

Best
Dan.

You're welcome, guys. I've thought you knew about this by now since it's fresh from the library and has been discussed in the forums for a few days.

I'm eagerly awaiting the "final" report on all the tweaks Jesus has discovered, which is in the works. Might be a small scale revolution in terms of tweaking FSX.

Do that. I'm really curious if I can late-regret trading that HD4850 in for the 9800GTX+. :d
(Then again, my GTX275 wipes the floor with a 4850...)

It definitely helps big time with my ATI Firepro 5700.
I'd say I see about 70 - 80 % less stutters with clouds and more stable fps, so thanks for the headsup!
I wonder where the guy gets all those tweaks.

My MSI Twin Frozr 260 GTX OC 685 wipes the floor with the HD4850 and your 9800GTX LOL

My problem with ATI and I speak from experience working with the engineers that work with us at TechCorp is tearing in FSX. ATI knows about it and has done nothing to correct it! You notice it the most in the cockpit.

Not with my GTX275 though. :mixedsmi:

(The 9800GTX+ died a (presumably) hot death last summer.)

This fix from the same author is intended to cure the vsynch issue in ATI cards... http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=283143

never had problems with ati...i run fsx on three pc with ati cards and also on an old pentium 4 2.8 ghz single processor probably because tweaked a lot, most problem are from ai traffic autogen and water eating fps...clouds do not seems to me.

Hi,

This was a great mod for my 5870 :salute:
I experienced a slight drop in FPS with clouds before, now it's very smooth indeed. The VSync mod was also implemented with success:jump:

Thanks a lot

Thanks!

By the way: I don't know if it was the shader mod or the switch from XP to 7, but one of those (or both) brought back working aircraft ground shadows. :jump:

Thanks for the HU. This mod has greatly improved my FSX experience so an update is always welcome!
