I am curious, how would I make my own custom scenery for FSX? I would only like to add simple things like boats and cars.

If you just want to add static library objects then you need to use a tool that can place the objects for you. In FS9 there are a lot but in FSX there are not many at the moment.
Some people are using the mission building tool and then converting the output to a scenery file. If you just want to do one or two objects that might be the best way. Alternatively you could try Library Object Manager from my site www.scruffyduckscenery.co.uk (http://www.scruffyduckscenery.co.uk). Version 2 works with FSX but will take you longer to set up and learn how to use it. LOM can also place effects, windsocks, triggers and so on.
To do more complex things like modifying airports needs other tools.

Well I don't use it so I cannot give you any advice from experience. You would need to check out the SDK. I understand there is an object placer in the mission tool and this can generate bgl files. I also understand that it may not work in all situations.
You might want to check the forums at www.fsdeveloper.com (http://www.fsdeveloper.com). There is a mission builders forum there and the guys who hang out can probably help
