I wonder if anyone has thought about designing one? I wish I knew how to design aircraft for FS personally. But the reason they interest me is I fly air tanker missions with 5 or 6 friends of mine all the time and the P-2 is the only aircraft that isn't on the air tanker list. Living in California we see them fly quite a bit on fires out here. SOH does such an awesome job with it's aircraft designs and maybe it's just a pipe dream to me and a few others that maybe someone would design one. I've always liked the way they looked without that radome on the bottom of them. The P-2 is just an awesome plane anyway.

I'm so glad someone asked about this... we've been needing one of these for a LONG time! The last P-2 air tanker I've ever found was for FS2000 I think. We need an awesome high quality firefighting P-2 Neptune that doesn't have the radome underneath! Alphasim had a nice flying Neptune, but it of course was the Navy version with the radome.

The 2 drawings that stealthshadow posted are great examples. The first one is Neptune Aviation's P-2 paint scheme. They fly P-2V5s and P-2V7s, (which of course look identical.) I'm putting one of my photos of a Neptune Aviation tanker below, just so you can see what they look like in action. :) They have slightly changed the paint scheme recently to include more red. But even if the paint were to be the older scheme, people would still love it.

The 2nd one he posted is Aero Union's SP-2H, which are now retired, but I would still love to see it in flight sim!! They had a few of those and they were beautiful birds. The one you see, and 01, and 03.

There is a 3rd operater that still uses them, and that's Minden Air. They have Tanker 48 (which is a long tail SP-2H) and Tanker 55. I put one of my shots of Tanker 55 below. Tanker 55 is an SP-2H, with an odd half Neptune tail. Beautiful bird though!

Whoever takes this project on is going to be a hero to a lot of people! :wiggle:

Hi Cag40Navy
I just built the tank to the best that I could and gave it to Milton.
I never knew about the website that he found or else I would have made all the tanks.
Milton put his own touch on it as I ask him to do so, mine was very basic. Thank you.
Bill Cook :)

You might contact Sundog to see if he is interested in doing the FM. He volunteered for the F7F project (and I hated to turn him down) but fliger747 usually does my FM work.

Regarding the retardant drop,thunder100 is doing the F7F tanker effects. If he is willing, I do not mind him sharing that with your project.

Keep up the great work.

FSX is H O R R I B L E !! My friend and I do flight dynamics, but we are strictly FS9. I was waaaaay stoked about this P2 being released, but now that enthusiasm is gone... Are you planning on doing a VC? Also, theres already retardant effects for FS9, and the retardant actually stays on the ground, its pretty cool stuff.

Sorry to be a downer for all those who use FS9 but I will give anyone the Gmax file to make the FS9 models if they would like, as soon as I get all the different models complete. And yes on the VC as I think that it adds a sense of realism to flying in FS.

As am I! I can't wait for this series of P-2's! FSX is perfect for aerial firefighting since you can see each other's effects. Especially with that retardant effect we have. We can build on each other's drops. Or even see smoke from a "show me" run from air attack. FSX is by far the best platform for realism.

It is actually...the stinger tail is only on the SP-2H, actually Minden Air operates an SP-2H with jets as I understand it. The P-2V5 and 7's that Neptune Aviation uses have the "nub" tail.

Great work btw!

Yeah, it's kind of confusing to remember the varients sometimes. The jet version SP-2H Minden uses is Tanker 48. SP-2H's usually dont have jets and only 3 props. P-2V5 and 7's have jets and 4 props.

Ok Guys.. TS chat and file browser has been set up. I'll PM each of the team with the password tomorrow ( its a might early in the morning and my eyes and brain are at half mast ). i feel we've got a good start to the production line framework, and a good beginning team.. Bill, if you need, I can also work as project coordinator, and keep everything moving at a steady ( though casual ) pace ( provided you folks dont mind telling me to slow down every now and then and to not get so excited ). I admit, i dont have an enourmous resume' as project coordinator, but i'll do my best :).
I try to be on teamspeak every day as the core group for the P-61 meets there as well, and i can bounce back and forth between channels easily..
:) lets go build us an aeroplane :)
Pam

PS.. I'll set up the project tracker later on here on SOH. This early in the game though it would just be taking up space. I'd like to recommend waiting till we have a basic model and UV map ( with or without VC ) to set that up as the tracker is mostly set up around bug reporting and problem resolution.. Admittedly though, i still have a bit to learn about using it and it may be capable of much more..

This project looks awesome! Can't wait until its completed. I can also help Warchild/AirAttackImages as well with the flight dynamics if needed, its my thing :D. I may be able to get some P2 aircraft manuals which would get us the best FDE possible for this aircraft!

Ok, obviously i want to keep the energy high and fun here,.. In the light of that, i was just googling to see of anyone had ever used a C-119 in the forestry service. Obviously, i love my fork tailed devils :).. well,, when i saw this http://www.rvcfire.org/opencms/photos/Firefightingaircraft.html I was exstatic.. Now i'm wondering if anyone would do us the honor of developing the Ryan air attack base scenery to use..
Hope you all enjoy the trip through History.. The B-17 really surprised me..

Since i'm at a bit of a lill in the P-61 development as i somehow got ahead of everyone else, i took some time last night to check out the state of Fire Control in FSX. It's pretty sad.
There are no useable P-2's available. What there is has a growth on its chin and flys terribly.
There's a P-3 made by Alpha. It works, but the panel looks dated and the flight model though ok, is nowhere near my standards..
Theres piglets OV-10's. Sadly they all have rockets attached.
Theres a P-16 for FS9. Its cockpit is part see through, where it shouldnt be, and the gauges are "all" out of date and dont work.
Theres another FS9 S-2 which is the most god awful color of blue i've ever seen.. Havent flown it..
Theres a pretty decent C-119.. Otiginally for FS9 but works fine in fsx.
There,s B-17's and I think theres a B-24, and I know theres a wonderful DC-10 out there from CLS.
There WILL be a P-61B model, and i know they were used too.
There's all kinds of choppers available
i didnt see any DC-4's
Theres the CS C-130 and Hemet is being lengthened to 4000 feet for them ( IRL)

Pretty much the state of AirAttack in FSX Is pretty grim, and it surprises me. There's a perfect opportunity here for a whole genre of playability that bridges the gap between game and simulation, and could be a lot of fun, as well as being very demanding that hasnt been exploited at all.. Just needs someone with a vision and a few organizational skills..

I love the way you think Pam, you think like us!

Behind the P-2, I have desperately wanted to see a PB4Y Privateer airtanker (all it needs is to be 'demilitarized' and not be bristling with guns).

By the way, 3 of us in this thread are all Hemet-Ryan locals. We all practically grew up at the base, which is how we met and share the same interests! So yeah, we'd love to see a base scenery. :ernae:

You could always use a base portal CMS ( Like php nuke )and then mod its content so that for flight ops it links to flight system software offering..

If i could afford it, i'd be happy too.. I just dont have any money for hosting services any more.. And too, i'm not very good at creating scenarios so would need a manager to create them and work with the players to make it fun for them and keep their interest up..

Well, from what i see in the photo's its looking fantastic. I think Bill has a very busy life though, so perhaps he's trying to get the planes to as a complete a condition as he can before he turns them loose on us. That was when we start in, we can focus on all the aspects of building them at the same time.. I havent confirmed that and its only speculation though so I could be incorrect.

I have stumbled across this thread and MUST make a correction.

There is no such bird as a P-2V7.

The pre-McNamara* designation was P2V-7
P = Patrol
2 = the 2nd patrol plane by Lockheed
V = Lockheed
7 = the 7th variation of the P2V

After McNamara* screwed things up, the designation became P-2H
The changes took place in late 1962.

Thanks for that little tid bit of history. But it was only a few postions away :D . Non the less, i didnt think it was McNamara that made that change.

hawkeye52
February 24th, 2011, 17:41
The way I heard the story from the BuWeps rep at Grumman, during a discussion about the TFX, the Navy called it by one designation and the USAF by another. When McNamara finally realized they were talking about the same aircraft, he got all wrapped up in his shorts and decreed there should be a single, "uniform" numbering system.

Now this may all be scuttlebutt, but you know McNamara was the initiator of systems analysis in the military and forced "commonality" upon the Services. BTW, the TFX eventually became the F-111, not exactly the USAF's most successful a/c. Despite great pressure from McNamara's Pentagon, The Navy was able to bail out of the F-111B, a true pig along the lines of the Brewster Buffalo and the Douglas Devastator.

33213 Getting most of the textures on the exteriour done just some detale texturing to do and the exteriour is done. then on to the VC. I am useing temp flight model to check progress on my texturing and to find any flaws in the model, witing for Warchild to get time to do a flight model for it as she is working hard on the p-61 model. As soon as I get the textures done I will pack them up for panel lining and doing bump mapping. I will then get the other models textured and all the animations done. Any one good at doing panel lines, I'm not the best as I do simple lines and don't do much detale.

It's not "dead in the water". You have plenty of modeling work to do yet, and based on what I have seen so far you have the ability to learn as you go. I think one of two things will happen...you will find another person that can help, or you will take on the challenge and do it yourself. The knowledge is out there, and if you want it to happen you will find a way.

Stay on course. You're doing fine! :salute:

Wow Tankerguy72 that looks supper good, keep up the good work.

Cag40Navy it might have to do with the texture size that I am using(2048x2048) I can resize them to 1024x1024 and see if that helps.

Bill, we can't say enough about the craftsmanship of these models... both Stealthshadow and I have been collaborating on the two flight models, Stealthshadow is a wizard on this stuff, we already have things probably 95% finished, with his expertise making up the bulk of both flight models. I've added the J34 power range to the P2V5 model (the J34s are running and providing thrust at 80% throttle and beyond.) The parameters and performance numbers are working well. Aircraft handling is very smooth and fits the manners of each actual aircraft.

Cool thing is both Stealthshadow and I know each other off the board. Not only do we both document (chase) fires together pretty often, we both live less than a half mile from Hemet-Ryan Air Attack Base (myself on the south, Stealthshadow on the north - funny eh?) and having grown up around these aircraft and spending considerable time watching them fly both around the base and on fires, we just can't get over the beautiful models you've created. FINALLY, there are actual Neptune air tankers in FS. This is great.

Thank you, Looking good tankerguy72. It must be awesome to live so close to a tanker base like Hemet, I use to live in Jamestown, California not far from Columbia Air attack Base, was so awesome to see those aircraft fly over the house to go fight a fire in the area, thats ware I got hooked seeing them work. Now I live in Reno, Nevada not to far from Reno Stead airport, don't get much time to go see the tankers that they have there, but I do get to see them work fires that happen in the area. I found this website to listen to Cal Fire, very neat and its free. I am going out of town this weekend so if I don't reply back thats y Thank you all again for your help.

Considering you've made the model to accept bumps and spec mapping, I would be happy to lend a hand where I can. Send me all you have for the model. Then I'll search for some high resolution shots as reference. If anyone has any close-up shots, they'd come in real handy for me at this point of the models process. I'd like to make the rivets and panel lines as authentic as possible.

I found one fairly decent 3-view drawing. It shows all but the underneath. I suppose I can wing it. Not that big of a problem because I can transfer from top, to bottom. Although it would be nice to have the clear photos.

I'm going to assume that all the doors and cut-outs are completed. I don't mind helping out, but I don't want to have to back-pedal once I get started if it's avoidable

I have the textures in a .psd format so doing layers and repaints is done much easer.
