Ft Huachuca Mohawk

This one is a "B" model assigned to the Army Aviation Electronic Warfare School at Fort Huachuca, Az., 1970. Some screens below from a test hop from Ft "H" to Douglas Municipal.

As you might imagine and I can attest, the heat was relentless, even though it's a dry heat!!! Some of these birds were Viet Nam vets so they were old and battle tested before they ever got to "Student Company, Flying Paltoon." I don't think that day glo paint lasts on anything it's applied to, regardless of temperature!

And speaking of bone yard, the biggest bone yard of all was just up the road about 60 miles and was a regular SLAR and IR student target. The only mission they wouldn't let us fly there was a photo run!

I did two tours as a photo interpreter with Navy Light Photo Squadron 63 (VFP-63) flying RF-8G Crusaders. We routinely flew photo over Davis-Monthan as a training target. I enjoyed reading the place out in the 1968-71 period when they still had a lot of classic 1950's (and earlier) stuff stashed there.

PS: You nailed the faded high-vis orange. :)

Hey Tarps, I was at Ft "H" from 01/70 thru 06/70 in TO school. I was on a couple daylight IR passes over DM and was just amazed at the endless rows of aluminum. Those hot aluminum panels sure lit up the IR!

Oh yeah, especially the unpainted birds. The old RF-8's did not have an IR sensor but we did have the AAD-5 as part of the Tactical Air Reconnaisance Pod System (TARPS) on the F-14's. Not exactly cutting-edge technology but a decent sensor. I remember a nice daytime pass over NAS Fallon, NV. TOT was right in the good mid-day time slot (1000-1400), there was a bare-metal 707 parked by the air terminal and it looked like somebody's barbecue grill on the IR. :d

Yeah, it was a real treat to get routes up north while in school. Most of the time we spent running Hwys 82, 90 and 92 looking for movers (SLAR) at night or hot stuff between Nogalas and Tombstone, Bisbee and Douglas. Looking back it was all good! :icon_lol:

:icon_lol: Wow! It really is a small world! Sctybdy, I have (somewhere) hundreds of slides of my time at Huachuca. I just need to find them! You are right, it is a really neat place with a very long and rich history. I'd love to see some of your pics. If I can find mine, I'll post the worthy ones here.
