I have wondered why only a few people have painted the freeware Alphasim A-10 Thunderbolt II. That plane is a real chore to make a paint template for. 7 freaking texture sheets! I have been working on this for the past 3 or 4 days...and don't even have the second sheet done yet! Admittedly, I haven't invest a lot of time into what I do have done...but the amount of time I have invested so far is equal to the amount of time I spent on the paint template for the Vigilante and the first 2 repaints. Lots and lots of teeny tiny details to add to the paint template...those are time consuming! What I have done so far is a far cry better than the stock stuff....so I can't wait to see the desert camo scheme fully redone and looking great.

I have the panel (2D and VC, lots of usable pop ups) done, have added some effects (engine smoke and wing tip vortex thingies).

What sound pack do you use for the A-10 MaddogK? I have two that I am trying out....one has better sounds, but is not all that well looped. The second one is okay, but doesn't have that edginess that I have heard with the A-10 in flight (in video only...never seen an A-10 in real life).

It has essentially the same engines as a CRJ-200, so if you find a decent one for that it should be close.

Ooooo A-10s have a unique sound. Very cool, mean and multi-phasic. Can I say that? As it comes toward you it has a faint but definite fan/jet whine, then as it passes and retreats it shifts to a quick whistle then air-rush sound. Vids don't do justice. Some sound packs come close to parts of this repertoir but none in my opinion capture it all. These may help.

Just remembered another aircraft, on Simviation. Search WebinBlue, I think the zip is a10a.zip. Had a decent sound if one or files two can be removed or swapped. Don't know about copyrights though.

A few years ago a pair of A-10s were part of the Planes of Fame Air Show at Chino.
I had seen them do their thing down at Miramar's show but that was quite a distance from the "Flightline" so the sounds were not too distinct.

At KCNO they were right at the fence in most of their flights and also did a couple low mock "attack" passes which actually crossed diagonally from behind the "Flightline" over the runways. To comply with airshow rules they had to be near wings-level on the approach to the line and at most in a shallow dive. So power was low or flight idle.....and I did not hear them coming on the first pass at all. Only when they were overhead and powering back up to climb out did you hear the distinct engine note. Not at all like a CRJ even if the engines are similar.

There were F15s and F16s at the show that year as well to fly in different heritage flights......but the A-10 stole the show from them big time. A-10+A1 Skyraider+P-47 makes for one great formation.

There is a TF-34 set I found somewhere (probably flightsim since avsim has become "dealer's choice for finding old files) called "a-10_thunderbolt-tf34-ge-100_-the_real_deal.zip". Haven't tried them out yet but I do have the Aerosoft A-10 and there is no better time than the present. It's a Christoffer Peterson Soundset so that says something for its pedigree.

Aeromed's right though. If you ever hear an A-10 live, it is a very unique experience.

My bad- I'm using the Abacus a-10 (which has a VERY eerie sounding engine) nothing like the Tf-34's you hear on the S-3's (not counting the characteristic 'whoop-whoop' they make). I'll see if I can shoot you a sample in the next couple days, I know it's not authentic but I like it because it's so creepy sounding and it came from Abacus that way. check your email obio.

And about engine smoke, it's virtually invisible! You might find an occasional shot with a little puff, but those are rare. The A-10's engines are considered smokeless. Invisible heat shimmers, maybe, but even those are reduced on the A-10 to reduce infra-red signature against i-f missiles.

My bad too. I just checked and the WEbinBlue used an aliased sound so I must have added another one, I'll try to ID what it is. I have the real deal A-10 zip if it helps. That's a good pick up on the smoke too. There are one or two smokes out there that are very faint and would probably do the trick.

While you're at it, can anything be done about the clear canopy? On my machine it's invisible.

That's the file name Claudius. Copied it from the file itself. I have no idea where I got it from since it is not listed at Avsim. It follows the same naming convention as the rest of Christoffer Petersen's sound sets. The Flightsim.com file may be it as well.

Here's a fix for the canopy. Just save to your system, unzip and drop into each texture folder of the Alpha A-10.

OBIO

Oh...I have set aside the task of redoing the original desert camo paint for now....it made my head hurt. But I do have a couple very neat paint schemes that I will be slapping onto the A-10. Some old school paint schemes...one is from 1977 and was the official paint scheme on a 25 plane run, then the official paint scheme was changed to something else.

Will upload a panel and effects package for the A-10 later this evening....if the thunderstorm/lightning isn't too bad. 2D and VC panels fully gauged, pop up windows that are quite handy, a CD Player for those long flights. Wing tip vortex thingies when more than 2Gs are pulled. Engine exhaust smoke...not accurate but adds to the plane...I like it.

Muchas gracias, looks great. Now Roger Ramjet won't get his hair mussed when he fires his cannon.:jump:

Forgot to add, this may be no help but while searching for A-10 sounds the game Armed Assault has a surprisingly good one. But I'll bet there is no way to borrow it.

Yup, the soundpack claudius24 posted is quite good, not quite the same sounds from the video clips posted earlier but very close. Strangely tho, they got me looking at my S-3's and all but one is aliased to the lear (never noticed) and the DSB model is sooo far wrong this soundpack will be replacing it. Maybe Obio can mix in a little more growl into this pack more fitting to the TF-34's on the viking...if ya got time that is.

Has anyone tried the a10 cannon effect I put together a couple months back?

If so, did you like it?
