Hi,

I got myself a new simmer PC:

Intel Core™ i7 Quad Processor i7-860 2,80GHz, Socket LGA1156, 8MB
2x Kingston 128GB SSDNow V-Series V+ SATA2 2.5"
P7P55D ASUS P7P55D, P55, Socket-1156 DDR3, ATX, GbLAN, Firewire, eSATA, PCI-Ex(2.0)x16
2x Crucial DDR3 BallistiX 1600MHz 4GB CL8 Kit w/2x 2GB BallistiX modules, CL8-8-8-24, 1.65V,
XFX Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-Express 2.0, "XXX", 2xDVI-I, HDMI, DisplayPort, 875MHz
Fractal Design Define R2 Black Pearl case
Samsung DVD/burner SH-S223L/BEBE, Dual, SATA, Lightscribe, Black, OEM
HD103SJ Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB 7200RPM, SATA 3.0 Gbps, 3,5", 32MB
GLC-00748 Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate NO OEM
Corsair HX 750W PSU ATX 12V V2.2, 80 Plus Silver, Modular, 4x 6+2-pin PCIe, 12x SATA, 140mm Fan

I have not started overclocking yet but this one is already a screamer ! The aerosoft F-16 is a blast with real scenery loading too, and it loads fast. 25FPS+ with no stutters whatsoever. Smooth !
Consider an I7 and those new SSD drives, the world will never, never be the same  Also, I recommend ATI, not NVIDIA.

Thanks

Looks like a good set up to me...

LOVE ATI.......

Not 100% sold on SSDs yet...

I just built a i7 with a 960 on it and FSX locked at 35 is smooth as silk... No OCing done ...

Enjoy that puppy Dag...

Dag that is a powerful setup and like you said SMOOTH! It should run FSX as well as the i7 Core 920/930

The only reason I never recommend starting out with the 1156 socket X55 motherboard with the i7 860 is that there is no upgrade path from there unless you switch to the 1366 socket X58 motherboard and a totally new CPU. If you are going to keep your setup for a two or three years it's a bit of money saver but the price of the i7 CPUs are dropping and more powerful, the i7 860 will not work on a 1366 socket X58 motherboard. So here, it makes more sense to start with an X58 motherboard and i7 930 or 960 because the new i9 Series 6 cores coming out will work on the X58 motherboard.

Congrats on a great build though. That 860 is a powerful CPU for the X55 motherboard you have there! It definitely will push FSX and other newer games.

Here is what I mean by not a money saver for us:
Price of the i7 Core 930 for X58 motherboards-$199.00

Price of the i7 Core for X55 motherboards$199.00

Plus I can buy the i7 X58 motherboards here as cheap as the X55 motherboards

Dag,

do yo use photo scenery? I'm looking at a fast I/O setup and SSD's are on my list, just wondering whether they really can deliver a blur free flight with photo scenery?

thanks
Andy

That all depends on your system..If you have any component that is a bottle neck than a SSD will probably offer you next to nothing !

That's true, but disks and network performance has lagged significantly behind cpu, gpu and RAM, so typically most systems are bottlenecked on their disk and network i/o performance.

If you have a 3gb/s SATA controller that gives you a maximum throughput of 300mb/s on each port of the controller, but most drives max out at 113-130mb, even the SSD's typically manage only 200-250mb unless you go for the super expensive PCI-E ones.

I'm going to try and run some performance monitoring on my machine to profile different flights, e.g. Aerosoft Manhatten X, Aerosoft London X, Megascenery California and default FSX scenery - just to see where the load is going.
