Not bad RR6!
Good 'stang shots. I like the lighting in the first shot.
I like the snout on that Bravo too...too bad you couldn't get the whole wingspan though.

Was it a bit hazy/overcast or did the camera underexpose a bit?

You should like that DA50-200. It's a good lens for the pricetag!
My DA50-200 spends a lot of time on my DL.

i took those photos today at about 1800 CST so the sun was just about in the right position (in the west to my back) to light the subject...i guess the biz jet...not sure what kind it is...was slightly underexposed because it was white and the sun was shinning on it. the camera was picking all the shutter speeds and f-stops...i guess maybe i should have maybe put it on aperture priority with f8 or 5.6.

I kinda figured it was later afternoon by looking at the shadows and coloring. The sky does look a bit hazy though too.

I usually run in Av mode. Some of my shots at the airshow here a couple years ago I tried Tv so keep a slower shutter speed (trying to catch a better prop blur).
But I'm getting back into the swing of doing things more in Manual mode again. I've been running some rolls of B&W through one of my K1000SEs lately and the first couple were just terrible...I've been relying on the auto settings on my DL too much!

The bizjet is a Citation Bravo (550b). I had to look twice at it since it's got an almost identical paint scheme as one of our parent company's CitationII (older version of the 550). This one has the Citation "Bravo" marque right behind the emergency door though so it's a newer model

i know what you mean...i have a K1000 and two MX's...but haven't used em in a couple of years...where do you get your b&w film developed?...or do you do it yourself?

I used to attempt to do my own back when I was in college and had a darkroom available.
With these last ones I've been using a local shop (used to be a Monarch shop until a local guy picked it up after they closed it up).
I had intended to drop em off at Walgreens for developing but stumbled across this shop by accident a couple weeks ago. http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=34561

Actually, I was just burning up some forgotten stock and playing with old toys. I was cleaning out one of the freezers and found a few rolls of Kodak Tri-X that I had forgotten about.

yep he always shows up for the Barksdale airshow..

yep me too...in fact i still have an old Besler enlarger..somewhere. i still have a bunch of b&w negatives but i just don't have the room, time or inclination to mess with it anymore but you do get alot of satisfaction out of developing your own film and printing your own photos..

Henry used to be my go-to-guy in the photo development world but they closed down the place where he worked....heck i don't even know if you can get Tri-X anymore....maybe Agfa still makes b&w...

I've got a bunch of freebie actions for Photoshop CS2 that do B&W conversions.
They're stuck on my old rig's hard drive and I haven't tried to transfer them over to CS4 on my new rig yet. Can't even tell ya what site I got them from anymore, but I know there are freebies out there that do a pretty good job on the conversion. You won't have that "demo" plastered all over it then. ;)

The one I've had the best luck with basically does a channel split of all the colors into separate levels, does a greyscale/desaturation conversion of each color level, then the action pauses and you can tweak the levels. I don't remember how they're mixed back together, but the last step flattens the layers back down to save for printing.

I'll have to rip that drive out of the case and snoop around on it to see if I can find them.

That plug-in you used sure does make the reds "pop", but the rest of the image has a pretty strong blue cast to it...but I'm looking at it on an uncalibrated monitor right now too.

Another neat thing you can do with stock Photoshop is the black and white channel mixer. It's located under Image>Adjustments>Black and White. You can adjust each color manually when converting from color to b&w. It adds a good deal of fine-tuning to the photo's contrast and really makes black and white pictures pop in my opinion.

djscoo, my version of PS (7.0) doesn't have black & white under image adjustments...but i did find this page that shows you how to do it with adjustment layers..

http://www.outdooreyes.com/photo73.php3

so i tried it and it works purty good...i added the sepia tone with the color balance..

That last one is very nice indeed! Regarding the more panning-like shot on page 1 of this thread, do you think it has to do with your AF having difficulties keeping up with a moving subject or just shaky hands like me ;) ? To compensate for the latter you could change your shutter speed, to say 1/200 or 1/250 (I mainly use 1/250 for props).

Personally, to turn it into sepia, I first use the monochrome mixer in Aperture (2), using 'monochrome' as preset, so no colour filters or anything...than I use colour monochrome and as cherry on the pie, sepia tone (you can find it in the adjustments menu). Attached is a picture showing which presets I use, in case the above is not entirely clear. This preset will give results like this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/vdbj/tags/sepia/).

i think one reason that one wasn't quite as sharp is probably the reasons you gave but it was also alot further away when i took the picture and i cropped it and enlarged it a good bit...this is what it looks like in its original form...
