There is a "Spitfire MkVIII MALTA" in the add-ons library. I installed it, and saw it was a French Mk VIII, serial 7 - JL244. But when I searched on the Web, the only Spitfire serial JL244 I found was a Mk V. So, I wonder if there really was such a Mk VIII serial JL244.

JL244 was a Spitfire Vc Trop, as evidenced by the large Vokes filter under the nose. This aircraft was part of 328 (French) Sqn RAF, which was formed from GCI/7 in 1943. They did later fly Spit VIIIs

Thank you hewman100, that matches the info I have found. So, the conclusion is that, although GC 1/7 "Provence" / RAF 328 (French) Squadron did later fly Spitfire Mk VIIIs, there was no Spitfire Mk VIII serial JL244.

Yes. However there was a serial block of Spit VIIIs in the JF-JG range. Haven't yet gone through to see if any of these are known to have served with 328.
