There's been some major improvements on msts since it was released in 2001. Here's a list of the top three (in my opinion anyways) that are needed,

There are two on this page from Microsoft.
Main page in case there's somethin else you might want

This update makes the SD40 drivable and adds a few rollin stock to the game

http://download.microsoft.com/download/TrainSimulator/Update/1.2a/W982KMeXP/EN-US/sd40-2_content_update.exe

This is an update to the game exe. itself. This is an importrant update

http://download.microsoft.com/download/TrainSimulator/Update/2.0/WIN98MeXP/EN-US/trainupdate.exe

This one's important also. The MSTS Bin Update is a 3rd party update developed for MSTS. It has enabled many new features, previously unavailable in Train Simulator. BUT you MUST have the updated exe from ms (posted above) installed to use this one.

OK Gramps do I have to buy the new upgraded version of MSTS to use the downloads or can I use my old version and just let it update? Looks I'm gonna start sooner than I thought-your fault by the way! LOL:icon29:

LOL, I'll take the blame on this one.

Nope, just have msts installed, download the updates from MS and install them.

Then download BIN, and run the installer on it. On bin, just do the basic install, uncheck the sound update an whatever else is there (been awhile an I can't remember what all it has) an your ready to go.

Just remember, ya gotta have the updated exe from MS installed before you can install BIN

On second thought, you might try the other options on BIN an see which one works best on your pc. You can always unstall it an start over.

That was what worked best on mine, yours ciould be diffrent.

I remember buying this one ages ago but did not like in then.

Downloading the above and will try to find the disks and give it a go again. I know I keep them, just have to locate them again.

Cheers

Thanks Gramps for posting this.

Going to get MSTS running on the Laptop. Looking forward to those updates.

Where do you recommend going for good addons? I was going to see what all SimMarket has. Also, is there any more freeware sites around for good Addon downloads?

Here's something that should be added in too Gramps, its XTracks. A lot of routes call for this file, its an auto installer.

You'll need "newroads" for alot of routes also.

You can find it at trainsim

Having had my copy of TS for 5 years with it still being unused, I decided to install it yesterday and found the discs. I then went looking for the essential extras as listed pretty much here, but the best guide I found was this tutorial on installing TS -
http://msts.steam4me.net/tutorials/installing_msts_xp.html

This is another useful hint -
http://msts.steam4me.net/tutorials/xtra_mem.html

I would never have found these without Gramps' other thread here, so thank you muchly for both these "newbie" threads,
Ro

Alright! Picked up an unopened copy of TrainSim in a thrift shop this morning walking from the hotel to the office. WooHoo.

My question is: I see Europe, Japan and USA .cab's on the install CD. Can I omit Europe and Japan in the install process? I won't be able to install it until I get home for the weekend, shucks.

Also, I'm only really interested in the Union Pacific line. I have downloaded a ton of files this afternoon (a confusing process. Mucho more so than FS2004 which I'm used to) and want to install them as well. Big Boy is my "baby", lol, but I also have some diesel engines going in as well. Are there sceneries similar to FS2004 by which I can build UP1946 or UP2011 etc.?

Thanks!

Sometimes it pays to plan ahead. Last night I went to Train-Sim.com to download Hugh Reilly's series of Big boy files only to find out they were MIA. Many years ago while looking for a copy of Train Simulator, I downloaded these files and lo and behold I just received an email from the wife saying they were indeed still in my backup archives! Can't wait to get home tonight!!!
