hello,
I have a good offer from the UK for a new PSP9 for 100 pounds which includes freight ,i know that many skiners use Photoshop cs.In order not to have problems understanding each other when seeking help on the forum does it matter if i own a PSP9 or Photshop cs?

I have PSP8 and have followed some tutos that were written with photoshop in mind. Many techniques can be applied to both but some tools in photoshop have a different name in PSP or they don't exist. However, in most cases, I think you won't have any problem asking for advice because the basics (layers, eraser and brush tools, effects such as blur) are the same.

Having used PhotoShop and PaintShop Pro, I normally use PSP now on 9.1.
In my opinion the learning curve is steeper in PhotoShop and PSP is more intuitive. PSP can also open PhotoShop layered images - don't think the reverse is true.

If I had the cash, I would have bought photoshop. The main selling point is that there are many free filters out there for photoshop, custom brushes and what not. I've heard that PSP is better though with vectors, which come pretty handy for rivets and panel lines.
PSP is more than enough for most things in skinning. So if price is an issue, you can't go wrong with PSP. What I miss though is some lighting effect (my experience is mostly about painting gauges and not whole skins, so that will probably not be useful for general texturing).

Hey Dog1,
If your just starting out with textures, rather go for Paintshop Pro. If you've got the cash then go for Photoshop. No matter which route you take you'll need to set some time aside to go through the program. It might be a good idea to have a look on http://www.pixel2life.com/ in their Tutorial section. This will give you an idea what the programs are capable of!

Hi Dog1
You can probably find an earlier version of PSP even cheaper. I use PSP7 - just for repainting aircraft - and it works great!

I also used PSP7 until recently (just aquired 9), and only once did I encounter a repainting situation it wasn't capable of handling - a PSD paint kit which contained features it couldn't support. (Actually, PSP9 can't support these mysterious features either, but it can still open the file.)
