Wow, a Wildcat with a virtual cockpit is already something cool, but it's also a native FSX model !
Thanks for the heads-up ! :ernae:
(you should change the title for something more explicit, don't you think ? ;) )

I grabbed it, I like it. A very nice freeware aircraft for fun flying (not tried the ships yet).

I second the change to the title as I have already heard from others that they missed it because the title was not descriptive enough to get their attention.

Here are two shots.
Cool thing is that a config file is included for use with AI carrier, in order to place a WWII aircraft carrier :)

is there a pilotable carrier in the package?

As usual with carriers: Acceleration only, right?

Extremely nice aircraft, let me tell you that if some of the true repaint artists that are regulars here at the SOH give it some loving, you get a primmo Wildcat at a price you canīt beat, no doubt, itīs very well modeled and i think it got an expanding possibility (modeling wise) just like Dinoīs T-45, i give this release a 2 thumbs up as a great freeware.

Best regards

i agree with prowler, if a texture artist did some work on this (specialy in the vc) it'd be a really nice aircraft!

I've always been a fan of the high-tailed FM-2 variant of the Wildcat, and I look forward to giving this one some great attention! Thank you Phil Crowther for this wonderful gift to the FSX community!

Where do you put AICarriers folder in FSX?

This is great. I just landed this FM2 a few times (3 different carriers). I have wanted a Wildcat (either F4F or FM2) to land on the little carriers. Having been studying images of F4F and FM2 for the last few weeks as part of my own modeling, I am impressed with the accuracy of appearance.

The carrier has great details as well. The waving flag, various cables on the tower, and life rafts stored on the railings are all nice touches.

Tomorrow this will be added to my growing WWII fleet (1 CV, 2 CVL, 2 CVE). With the CVL and CVE sets, it may be possible to create a scenery (traffic) file for the battle off Samar (Taffy 3).

One of the things I love most about these is the folding wings. Awesome design. The landing gear is pretty wild as well.

This model looks very well done. The exterior looks brilliant. Love the animation for the wings.

Making and then texturing VC's is one heck of a difficult job. I have always thought of it as 'making a ship in a bottle'. You are making something 'in' something. You dont know what its like until you try it. Then painting all the bits and adding in shading for realism, some scratches and things, you can probably spend more time on the VC then the entire plane's exterior. Makes me sweat just thinking about it, lol...

Nice looking plane!

Well, until Vertigo release thrie F4F series, this is the only game in town. It's a bit low on detail for FSX by a gallant start. The main texture size is only in the old FS0 1024 size and the graphics are not the sharpest in the world. The one thing I did change right away was the propblur, attached in the zip.

The great thing is, it get tremendous frame rates in FSX!

This isn't bad at all! I could do without the pilot "bon homme" in the cockpit, but hey, free is free, and she's fun to fly!

Where do you put AICarriers folder in FSX?

If you already have the FSX AI Carriers utility installed, the aicarriers.cfg is in...

C:\Program Files\AICarriers

...just add the new lines supplied in the "Readme" to the end of the AICarriers\ aicarriers.cfg file.

I understand that with AICarriers one has to have Java installed, is this so? I don't normally likie Java very much as it can play havoc with the system.:engel016:

Yep, same here Baz, had issues in the past.
It does require it and so far no problems in vista 64 bit except for the annoying updates, LOL.

Here is another picture. This is just landed on CVE-73. The static Wildcat's don't look as nice of course, but they provide some ambiance.

this is a nice little package. Getting the wings to fold required a little editing to the Standard.XML file in my AppData folder.

Hopefully the community can do some repaints.
