OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM WARBIRDSIM

Following a number of issues with Windows security affecting our FSX product we would like to announce that we have today completely solved the problem and that there should no longer be any more issues with this or any other conflicts related.

We would like to apologise to everyone who experienced problems and for the time it has taken out of their flying enjoyment. We wish everyone to know that we have always wanted to resolve the issue and that as we have been listening to the feedback we appreciated all who took the time to write and that this response is the result coming from of a number of good customers working with us to help resolve the matter. Thank you to you all.

While we were busy solving the problem, our lead developer has been busy engaged with the improved modelling, added fixes and further texture work in what amounts to an update set, making the current best Mustang B,C and III in the world even better!

We trust that everyone will appreciate that we turned these items round as quickly as we could to respond to people's requests and to provide everyone with this solution as well as with the extra updating as a bonus.

We would like everyone to know that we are learning to work with a community who have shown us they want us to listen, to improve and to respond to their needs and that this will be our policy for all future releases as we work together to make the best products in their class.

Sincere best regards,

Stephane.

What does this update? Is it updating the security features to where it'll be easier to install if we ever make changes to our systems, or is it updating the P-51 B/C models themselves?

Bought it 45 minutes ago, received the download link within seconds after completing the payment process. Installed it as soon as the download completed. Install went without a hitch, completely painless.

Started FSX and accepted the new software when prompted by FSX. Picked one of the new Warbirdsim P-51's to fly and took off into the virtual wild blue yonder.

Great aircraft and the new process worked well for me, without any headaches and with instant flight, no more waiting!

Thanks for listening to the users, the new process makes the purchase experience frustration free.

Yeah! The model now works as ai when you fly different aircraft. When I clicked on the link from my confirmation e-mail, it looked like it wasn't doing anything. After I logged in, my download manager eventually started automatically downloading the updated zip file. Jan, can't wait for the repaints! We'll have to get a good mixed P-51B & D flight together again.

Wonderful shots/repaints Jankees!
Quick question : How does one remove the drop tanks on the P-51? The drop tank release lever in the VC has an odd glitch - A hand appears when the cursor is over it, but when I click it nothing happens. I also get no result by using the keyboard shortcut for it.
BTW does the P-51 have to be in flight for the droptanks to release - I haven't tried this yet.

Thanks, Warbert! Update went smoothly.. Jan, if Warbirdsim okays it, you should consider releasing all your P-51 repaints in a single exe file... You have never done I paint I did not like! Beautiful paints of an outstanding model! :applause::medals::icon29::guinness:

EDIT: For those of you undecided about purchase, it's an outstanding plane, worth every penny IMHO.. And Jan, I have bought many payware planes only AFTER I saw you paint them..

Paid for, downloaded, installed. All took around five mins. Perfect. :applause:

What a great airplane, John you've done a fantastic job. I've just taken a quick flight around Portland and the aircraft behaved like a dream. I prefer the feel of 3D gauges, but the VC is so well modelled and immersive, that I didn't even notice they were 2D beyond initial inspection. The sounds are also fantastic, both inside out out.

This aircraft will be on my PC for a long time to come.

Now I have to find time to install all of Jan's excellent repaints!

The pictures I found of this bird did show it with a birdcage canopy and no invasion stripes, or with a Malcolm hood and 'sawn-off' stripes, so I did the in-between paint (Malcolm, full stripes), if that is OK with you guys...or do you prefer the older/later version?

Jim, I believe you mentioned that you have a problem not running more than 30 repaints, is that correct? This would in no effect be a result of the product doing this, but likely a simple typo issue within the Aircraft.cfg file, for your 31st paint scheme.

Bomber_12th
February 27th, 2010, 08:05
Jan Kees,

It is awesome to see all of these repaints coming! As for Patty Ann II, with full invasion stripes and Malcolm hood, it looks just fine as is - however the tricky aspect comes down to when exactly was it, that the aircraft was modified to accept the Malcolm hood, and when was it that the aircraft switched from full invasion stripes, to the cut-down, identification stripes.

Also, there is one special detail about Patty Ann II that you might be very interested in replicating. Because of the fact that the B's only had 4 gun ports, Thornell had 2 more gun ports painted on, as a scare tactic, making it seem like his B model had 6 guns. The way this was done, by whomever painted the fake gun ports, was to mimic the red-tape build up around the actual gun ports, and then paint the gun barrel where it would be. This can be seen in the following photo:

http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/URG/images/urg0504.jpg

With invasion stripes applied however, these details might have simply been painted out.

There is actually a new-build P-51B that is currently under construction, that will be finished in these markings when completed, with the two extra gun ports painted on to match.

Bomber_12th
February 27th, 2010, 08:41
Jan Kees, when I saw this thread yesterday, I thought it might be right up you alley, showcasing many not-seen-before photos of P-51B/C's, amongst other aircraft, like P-51D-5's and Bell P-39's. Besides anything else, the close-ups provide great details on weathering, paint, markings, and the like.

http://warbirdinformationexchange.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=34950

If I wasn't so busy, I'd be tempted to paint a few of the B/C's featured in this thread myself.

yes, I was aware of this, but I had limited time today (but the performance of the Nederlands Dans Theater was outstanding), hence the simple solution.
I'll do another one with the gunports (soonish), and I'll also try to replicate the inscriptions on the side in the earlier script, because these were changed with the stripes as well..
Glad you like my efforts btw!
and you just make sure you get your degree first, and the D-model out second, OK?
Oh, before I forget, how about a paintkit? I'd love to do a swedish, french and british version, but I'm having problems getting rid of the roundels on the fuselage...I'm still working on the original factory fresh textures...

Jan Kees, I had actually thought that you had a paint kit already, and will make sure to get one sent to you. Each is crafted for individual users, so it may take a couple of days, especially on top of the work I have going right now.

Josquin and Jim, I'm glad to hear everything has been worked out for you!

Nick, as always, I love your screenshots! In your last one, I love how everything looks like it is moving forward - I made sure when I modeled the pilot, that he looked 'alert', and this comes through well in this particular screen shot.

Bomber_12th
February 27th, 2010, 14:12
Here are some old screen shots that I thought I'd post of "Ina":

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/Bomber_12th/Ina10.jpg

The distinctive shape of a P-51B/C wing, which would be modified after the P-51D prototype, to include 6 protruding gun ports, the cancellation of a leading-edge landing light, and a greater angle to the leading edge, between the nose and the gun ports, as a direct result of modified main gear retraction geometry. For the P-51D production, the four position lights would be removed in favor of a single light at the tip of each wing cap, and much of the overall structure of the wing, including gun access doors, gear doors, and the internal structure, would be modified.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/Bomber_12th/Ina11.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/Bomber_12th/Ina4.jpg

The pitot tube, seen at left, under the wing, would be greatly shortened at the start of P-51D development, as would be the design of the bomb/droptank hardpoints:

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/Bomber_12th/Ina18.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/Bomber_12th/Ina16.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/Bomber_12th/Ina14.jpg

This one illustrates the "hump" over the nose, quite well, just in front of the windscreen. This "hump" is not present on the P-51D, as the result of a lower profile firewall, than the earlier design...

I'm still digging around the files for the pictures I took of Ina when Kermit first brought her back to Florida... I think the Red is a bit darker than anyone has depicted but I won't know for sure till I find the pics which were taken on a very sunny day. The Swedish Air Force had two B's , 26002 / 43-6461, which they probably never used, except for spares, and this one 26001 / 43-6365, formerly 'Z-Hub' GQ-J of the 355th FS. It made an emergency landing in Rinkeby, Sweden on 13 may 1944, flown in by Lt Posey who had run out of fuel, and interned. It was later bought from the US and remained in Swedish service until 19 november 1952, flying with F16 squadron, where it was used as a 'hack' aircraft.

...even I have a Bald Eagle repaint, though I haven't released it. :)

In mine, the nose anti-glare shield is typical olive drab, from the factory, but the olive drab on the rear fuselage and on the top surfaces of the wings is portrayed with RAF green instead. As far as I know, this is how it would have originally been during WWII (since it was really the only available paint close enough to olive drab for the squadrons to use - I also have a profile done up this way). They could have painted over the glare shield in RAF green as well. The P-51B "Old Crow" was a bare metal Mustang, painted in RAF green in the field, which is recreated within the product, so you can see the direct difference between the factory olive drab and RAF green applications.

Jan Kees, I am also a big fan of olive drab - 352nd FG schemes. One thing to look out for, is that a lot of the OD schemes carried the earlier, first shade of blue, that the squadron used. This shade was even lighter than the shade used on your repaints to date, and "Princess Elizabeth", which was the second, more medium shade. Based on my recollection, you have the correct shade in this instance. Then there was the the third and final shade of blue as well, but wasn't in use until late in the war.

Again, I love seeing all of these repaints from everyone! Superb work!

Hey Doublecool,

I'm not sure about releasing any repaints myself, but I do know that one of Warbirdsim's goals is to arrange a method in which all of our customer's repaints will be available, in a centralized way, through Warbirdsim's web site.

A problem that faces me right now, is the update that is underway for the FSX P-51B/C product. The exterior has been under surgery, to the point that it will require slightly different texture layouts for the exterior, than are currently in place, both for higher resolution and corrected items. As this is the case, it would probably be a good thing if all repainters keep their layered files intact. Right now it looks like the update would be released sometime in late summer - it all depends on when the D is finished, and there will be a number of months following this to really get the update finished off - while still doing work to support it.

Might I suggest that when you bring out the update, you give it a different model number(s), so we can keep the old paints, while any new ones can use the new model. There are already 5 models in the folder, so a few more won't hurt I think?

Meanwhile, here's an update:

I'd be curious to know how these updates will impact us FS9 users. For example, I've converted all of Jankee's FSX repaints into FS9 and would hate to be unable to do that down the road if the models are changed for FSX and not for FS9.

Bruce, this photo may help you out - of the same aircraft, though a bit later in its life. As you can see, there is a clear indication of the serial number for the tail. You can also see where RAF green has been applied to the fuselage and upper wing surfaces, and by this time, the aircraft has been modified to incorporate the Malcolm hood. Also, the lettering for "Big Mac Junior" should be yellow with a black surround.

Amazing, and very provocative shot, Noddy!

I'm loving each and every repaint, thank you Jan Kees, Bruce, and Stephan for all of your work!

I personally would love to see "Bee", otherwise known as "Boise Bee". There is a P-51C that recently completed restoration, that is painted up in the markings, owned by the Warhawk Air Museum. You can see photos of the nose art being applied to the aircraft, here:

http://s545.photobucket.com/albums/hh394/rossparton/Boise%20Bee/

The restoration features the addition of "Boise" to the nose art, which wasn't present on the original. This was added with permission of Duane Beeson's family.

If anyone plans to do a representation of the original, be aware that some profiles show that the aircraft had green-mottled paint applied over the OD base paint scheme - this is incorrect. It may look like this in a couple of original photos, but it was only a result of the aircraft being exposed to the elements.

"Miss Dallas", another 4th FG ship, would be a great one as well.

I'm really enjoying this Mustang and thought I might get into the repainting act as well... Here are two I've been working on, Speedball Alice is real world of course, flown by Capt. Don Bochkay. The other is from Len Deighton's fictional novel "Goodbye, Mickey Mouse".
I thought I'd start on a couple more from the 357th (I like the red and yellow checkered nose!). Perhaps "Shanty Irish" and "Shillelagh" being its close to St. Patty's day and all.

I'm sorry about the distortion problem - I've had to combat it as well myself when doing repaints, but I think it is the least problematic I could make it. I know first hand in creating "Happy Jack's Go Buggy" for the Warbirdsim P-51D, that with a long line of bombs/kill marks along the upper cowl line, it works well to start with a marking that is stretched vertically, about 4 pixels higher than the ones you have for the most part. Then, through the first 6-8 or so kill markings, create a downward arc, with markings that are 3 pixels higher, 2 pixels higher, 1 pixel higher, until you get to the original size.

Jan Kees, in an up-coming Warbirdsim release, which will be featuring new variants of the B/C's, I made an Aussie scheme from the same squadron, and they look very much alike. I think the blue is just a bit too saturated at the moment.

Stephan and Bruce, I love the repaints! The crisp nose art looks particularly nice!

the 9 in the serial you mean?
Numbers were often reserved for hack or clobber college aircraft.
It was only the 31st and 52nd FG I believe that used them on combat aircraft, but I could be mistaken there

very nice shots btw!

Correct In a way, The actual aircrafts serial was 43-6528 but on transfer to 343rd FS/ 55th FG, the OD paint was removed and replaced with this BNM/Yellow/Green scheme the painter put the wrong serial code on 43-6529.

Nothing flashy this time..
I discovered thta the 370th FG changed from P-38's to P-51's in february/march 1945, and one of them was this nameless 43-12457, which previously flew with the 353rd FG. I have no idea who flew this aircraft, so see it as an hommage to all those not-well known pilots who still put their life on the line on a daily basis.

I've seen this position on MTO aircraft, but not on ETO planes?
It's a mistake due to haste on my first version and a lack of attention on the adaptation for FSX.

Bruce, that is gorgeous, and very sharp! There will be, hopefully one day, a specific model made for such a scheme to better fit it - it has long been in the plans, but other things have trumped it. Besides even the famous Mantz P-51C's, there were a dozen or more, very interesting B/C model racers that came out of the late 40's as well. If you can, try getting the intakes, coolant doors, and pitot mast red as well, in order to complete the look. Really looking forward to it!

I don't have this plane yet, but will definitely buy it if someone comes up with "Kidd" Hofer's "Salem Representative". This was my favorite P-51 model back in EAW, and I would love to be able to fly it in FSX.

Now, don't get me wrong, I will probably get it anyway, and I know how much work it must be to do these repaints. (Well, actually, I don't know how difficult it is, because I have no clue on how to go about it, but you know what I mean, right?)

Jan, if I'm going to offer any constructive criticism, and I hope it will be taken as such, I think the brush marks representing scratch/wear marks along the inner wing look too much like a solid round brush has been used to create them. Have you thought of experimenting with a set of scratch brushes instead, or is the detail too fine for these on the texture sheet?

I only mention this because I feel that these marks are the only detracting part of your work on Gig's Up.

Edit: I thought I'd add a picture in case I wasn't being clear.

thanks Nick,

Yes, I did try brushes like that, but wasn't happy with the result, somehow the results were never random enough for my liking. I decided on this (1 points round solid brush indeed) and did not expect anybody to come this close...silly me...
OK, back to the drawing board, but that may take a while as I'll be travelling first...

Looking good. I've just picked up the pack Bruce put together and a few of Stephans that I missed and I just need to install them. Thanks guys.

I do think this one heads my 'favourite' list though.
