Nicely done. Worth a mention that somewhere down the line is an official "IL2" Korean war sim, some renders of a Skyraider and MiG-15 floating around on one of Olegs official boards.

Oh wow! I loved MiG Alley, but the graphics now are so dated. It would be truly fantastic to have an updated graphic and gameplay engine, even if based on the iL2 engine. Thanks for the find.

Guys, if you have Il-2 1946 you can get all of this content in free mods from the community (Korean maps and 50's props and jets). Check out the SAS site here: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php

Your best bet at this time is to wait for the upcoming Ultrapack 3.0 (reportedly next week) from here: http://ultrapack.il2war.com/index.php It will contain the latest jet pack with all versions of the Sabre and Mig 15, including loadouts with guided IR missiles.

If you have rigs that run FSX well then you would be able to run modded il-2 in top graphics quality as shown on this video, although some post processing might have been done on that one. Jafa, who signs this video, is one of the sound effect gurus in the il-2 modding community.

Bjoern

...including loadouts with guided IR missiles.

Real guided missiles or "Oh lord, I missed that B-17 by miles! Stupid manual guidance!" guided missiles? :icon_lol:

Dimus
May 6th, 2011, 05:51
No, not those wire guided nazi secret weapons missiles. Sidewinders and K-13s with the homing tone also. Check out this video, where you can also see the Sabre cockpit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJnRxkRzf6A&feature=related

Now before you start noticing errors and bugs, this video is from last year and the modders have put a lot of work in this pack since then. Still there might be things that can not be done, like the effect of the sun to IR seekers but still it is quite amazing if you think that this is the work of just enthusiasts working for fun.

Dimus - I found the website and tried to install Il2'46 but I have win7 64 so I was having a problem installing it - I got it installed and loaded the sim for the first time, but after that - I could not get it to run again...tried the securom update but to no avail...I click on the Il2 icon, go into the folder and try the .exe from there - nothing...it starts to load for a second and then just stops...nothing in task mgr...its just a no go.

what am I missing?

Dimus
May 6th, 2011, 12:51
Try running the file il2setup.exe from within the game's folder and setup at least your monitor's resolution correctly and chose OpenGL as "Provider". Other things can be setup from here as well. Hit OK and try running il2fb.exe again.

Let me know if that works. If not we'll have to check other stuff.

May 6th, 2011, 20:32
ok - got it installed by registering it with ubi..? never had before and I got this copy from gogamer about 6 years ago now...

anyway - got it installed and tried to patch it up to 4.101m but the splash screen says 4.07m..?

I'm about ready to drop it and wait for a dedicated Korean War sim.

Dimus
May 7th, 2011, 07:26
This all sounds strange. The game installs as 4.07. The patches are sequential so you have to apply them all, i.e. 4.08, 4.09, 4.10 and then 4.101.

Also, now that I remember, when installing on Vista, the setup.exe did not work but a file called a.exe in the DVD was the one that actually worked right. Perhaps for Win7 it is similar.

I would suggest you try asking also in the il-2 forum here as well as the SAS site where all the il-2 gurus are.

Finally, as far as I know, Il-2 does not make any registry entries so it is quite portable. This is why most of us have multiple installs in our drives by just copying the whole folder. In this way we may have for example a game modded for Korea era and another for WWII. It is best if you keep the il-2 folder outside the Program Files folders to avoid Windows security issues.

Don't give up on it yet. I think you'll be missing out.

Great! In order to add mods you first have to make your game moddable. There are two ways to do this. The simplest way is to use one of the big mod packs like Ultrapack. This is easy as you just run the setup of the pack and it takes care of everything. The pack installs also a bunch of great mods that make the game much better than default like new sounds and effects, as well as a lot of the new planes and maps that the modders have made. However you also get a lot of content that you might not be interested in.

The other way is to install a mod activator like the SAS one. This opens up your game for you to add mods of your choice. You can then select to add your prefered effects or sounds and of course planes, maps and other stuff.

For the SAS mod activator check here: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,15232.0.html

On the same site you can find a lot of mods, including the latest jet pack: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,14158.0.html

and the maps for Korea and some more planes of the era here: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,14166.0.html

Manual modding is a bit more complicated than adding a pack. I would suggest to wait for just a few days until the new Ultrapack v3.0 will be out and will contain all of the above in an easy install. You will find the Ultrapack 3.0 here:

http://ultrapack.il2war.com/index.php

However, we might have used a lot of space from the FSX forum already so I'd be happy to continue this on the Il-2 SOH forum a few lines lower from here.

I have to say that in using the mods, in particular Ultrapack 2.01, IL2 has become an altogether different and fantastic experience for me. The new and retextured maps, the aircraft mods and the new effects are absolutely phenomenal in my opinion and greatly increase the immersion. I've been having a ball re-discovering WWII combat simming.

Ultrapack 3 is on the verge of release for installation over IL2-1946 version 4.10.

THX

Dimus
May 8th, 2011, 06:18
Of course. It is best if server and client are identical installs. Some servers have checks about that and you can not connect if your setup is different, to avoid cheating.

On line flying is possible either between two games IP to IP or by setting up a dedicated server that runs the mission and all players join. In our squad, the Boys of 60 we have a dedicated server set up and use it to fly coop missions, Korea included. For public servers check out the Hyperlobby here: http://hyperfighter.sk/

Most servers in Hyperlobby show their game version, configuration and what mods they have activated so the player can prepare.

ok - got the SAS Modact 302 installed - and then the Korean Jet pack installed....it took some time to work it all out (installation guides always seem to assume you've done it before) and I have to say - with patience and perseverance, this makes Il2 a whole new ballgame.

the upgrades that come as part of the base Modact 302 include but are not limited to improved sounds (engine and prop, machine guns and cannon..etc) and atmospherics.

the Korean Jet 1956 files are equally impressive

I'm glad you got it working! :wavey:Carrier ops are a blast in Il-2. There is also a mod somewhere that adds deck crew and another one that illuminates the deck at night. They should somewhere in the SAS site.

awright easy Pal, wont do me any good to rain pain on the gomers unless I can get back on the boat...lol

deck crew and lighting, eh...is there a catapult mod somewhere also?

BtW - if anyone out there has Il2'46 or wants to get it (the price is around $10.00) I have to recommend the SAS website for all of these FREE mods made with expertise and regard for the original sim and developer (Oleg)...even though the original code is long in the tooth, these people have made it shine and it all runs smooth as glass on today's mid range rigs - a quad core rig with a good GPU means NO stuttering ever, period end.

Dimus

BUT - I cannot Save or Fly any of the missions I create with these maps...

I'm stumped - checking SAS website for an assist

Dimus
May 10th, 2011, 22:09
When this happens the cause is usually that you are missing modded objects that are not standard. This is the problem of creating custom installs with modact. Some mods might conflict or need other mods to work right.

There is a big pack of objects here: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,12257.0.html

There is a possibility that if you install this you'll be able to save your mission.

The safest way is to wait a couple of days and install the Ultrapack 3.0. All mods in the pack are tested and bug free. It is planned to be released this week. That is what I am waiting for personally. Korean maps and planes, carriers and everything will be included.

You're very welcome heywooood. After trying many flightsims I have ended up using Il-2 as a combat sim and FSX for my GA flying fix. I also have fun making Greek stuff for both of them as I am doing some airport scenery and repaints for FSX and I also have a map of western Greece in the works for Il-2 but not much time to finish it.

I don't think you have harmed your install. Try that object pack I suggested. It might work while you wait for UP.

Anyway, as said before Il-2 is portable so you can make another clean unmodded 4.10.1 install ready to accept the Ultrapack and keep this one for experimentation. Just name the folders differently.

well thank Prowler because he was the one who posted the dang video in the first place..

and Dimus, without his help I would not have known what to get or where to install it all.

the SAS site has everything you need, I will tell you though, be careful asking questions - those mods are touchy about what threads which questions are posed in...touch-ie

couple of tips

you want to have three or even four clean installs of Il2'46 patched up to 4.101 if you have the room for them all...two at least. Then IF you cross yourself up you can recover quickly...and - you can have a dedicated Korea sim, and a dedicated Eastern Front or Western Front WWII install etc...without trying to get all those mods jammed into one.

and you want to keep out of the windows 7 main program files...put Il2 anywhere else you like, but stay out of Program Files and Program Files (x86) - just go into your users/your name Files and make a folder there - huge important key tip that one

The Ultrapack 3.0 release is imminent, any day now. It will include a ton of mods all packaged in compressed SFS format that does not eat up your HD and runs faster. It is a one stop install of everything on a clean 4.10.1, nothing else needed. The readme describes the content here:
http://ultrapack.il2war.com/index.php/topic,3892.0.html

As you can see from the content you will end up with a sim where you can fly hundreds of planes and even mix up different eras with what if scenarios. The readme does not include the maps but at least the current version 2.01 for Il-2 4.09 featured most of the known war theaters.

The SAS Modact is needed only if you wish to make a customized install of selected mods, like heywooood did. Ultrapack is easier, plus you can also add mods to it if they are not included and you like them. It is also a standard install used by public dedicated servers in hyperlobby so you can fly online.

Not 100% sure about that but you won't lose anything by trying. The 3.0 needs a clean 4.101 anyway so you won't be installing on top of your current install but making a fresh one. I still have my UP201 install on my HD and will keep it until I'm sure that I am not using it.

I just installed it today and WOW! What an amazing selection of planes to fly! Many are FS2004-payware quality, though some others are pretty simple. (The only egregiously bad ones are the "T-6 Texans" that are modified Dauntlesses. :) But everything from early 1930s to post-Korean war jets with working Sidewinders... Flyable bombers and torpedo planes... And I haven't even delved into the mission modifications or other stuff yet.

Is there a good explanation anywhere of the difference between the Ultrapack 3, SAS Modact 3, and Classic Mod Games settings? Those are the choices in the executable selector, but I'm not sure what each changes, and I didn't see anything in the setup docs.

Dimus
May 30th, 2011, 00:39
strykerpsg, UP3.0 needs a clean version of Il-2 version 4.10.1 and it installs on top of it.

DennyA, glad you like it. Bear in mind that it is a 10 year old game already! As for the selections at startup, since you only have UP3.0 as a mod then this is your only selection. The others would work only if you had other modded versions of the game with selected mods using the SAS Mod activator. It is there to accommodate experienced users who like to have multiple customized installs.

I also just setup a dedicated server for our group and we had our first session last evening, playing a Battle of France/Dunkirk scenario prepared by our good host and CO "pilotsden". The UP3.0 version of the Il-2 Dedicated server software is the best I've seen so far with excellent on line performance, stable and no lag experienced at all. In my opinion, on line flying is where Il-2 is at its best.

Found the answer in the IL-2 Forum.

If I was looking for a combat sim, how does this compare to the CFS series?
Dougal,

There are two IL-2 sims: IL-2 1946, which is the cumulation of all of the earlier IL-2 games (IL-2Pacific Fighters, etc.). This is the one we're using the mod with. It's an older sim, but it's awesome in so many ways. Particularly with this mod, as it has a dozens of well-modeled pre-WW2-to-Korea planes to fly. It's a very sterile sim in single player, with over-touchy flight modeling, a brain-dead padlock, and AI that makes the CFS AI look like they planes are being flown by a team of HAL-9000 Chuck Yeager.

Il-2: Cliffs of Dover is the new one. Shipped in terrible condition, but a couple of months later, the engine issues have been addressed, and they're tweaking the rest. Horrid campaign, AI's barely any better than 1946, but the plane modeling, graphics, and general dogfighting are aweseome.

Both have flaws, but both are must-haves for any sim fan.

The great thing about IL-2 1946 is that it's CHEAP now. I'd suggest getting it from Good Old Games, as their version is DRM-free. You can also buy it from Steam. It should be $10 or less.

It's different from CFS; the developers had different emphases. It's not better/worse (though the campaign is much worse than CFS3), just different.

As said, you start by having the unmodded Il-2 1946 patched to 4.10.1. Then you download the Up3.0 package (abt 6.2Gigs). The package contains several .rar files and a file named "UP_3.0RC_Client.part01.exe". Running this will start the installation of UP3.0. You need to point the installer to the folder of your clean 4.10.1 install. Once the installer finishes you run JSGME and activate UP3.0. Then you may launch the game by running il-2fb.exe.
