This picture was found in the "Canada at War" website. I had always wondered how they painted the Allied aircraft in D-Day stripes.

I remember reading in Peter Townsend's BoB book how his squadrons' Gladiators (or was it Furies?) lost significant airspeed (like 5 to 10+ mph springs to memory) when they had to paint camo over the factory silver dope of the pre-war aircraft. They blamed the weight of the paint.

They also hated to loose the sleek silver look. Makes me wonder if it was just all subjective.

Since paint weighs 10 lbs per gallon the additional weight was actually a significant factor.

Yes, very nice pic!! And that's a gyro gunsight in the pit, too!
