View Full Version : Beta Testing Team

Willy has agree to head up the beta testing efforts. :applause: This will involve a structured test format against all available technical data using a set of beta test templates just to help with procedure and act as a punch list. Not looking to make it too formal, just thorough. We want to keep it fun.

Testing will include all aspects of the project, not just the flight model. He may need one or two volunteers to help assemble the plan and template. But, everyone is welcome to assist once they are ready. Some of you may be more comfortable testing sections or some components. No problem, but the structure provides for meaningful feedback to the team.

A Pilot's Training Manual will be provided to all team and beta test team members. Checklists will be available for the casual testers.

The beta test team will consist of a manageable number of technically oriented participants and number around 4-6 is my guess. All others may assist and provide feedback in a casual way. We need you to fly in your typical way for exposure to your system and techniques. Yes, we are flexible too. :mixedsmi:

All responses will be sent to and managed by Willy who will forward change requests to the rest of the design team. Change requests will be evaluated and acted on or set aside at the team's discretion.

Remember, this is a simulation, not exact replica or official training sim. We will focus on having a good "likeness" in all aspects, not perfection.

Please support Willy and the team in this role.

First let me say that this is not my first Beta Test and I've beta tested a few dozen aircraft for FS & CFS as well as having been a beta tester for Interplay. And I used to do Quality Assurance Inspections on nuclear submarine repairs in real life. So, I've got a little experience with this kind of thing.

Right now we don't have anything to test, but I'd like to be ready when we do. With that in mind, I'd like to pass along my philosiphy on beta testing.

Our main job as Beta Testers is to provide feedback to the guys designing good substantive feedback to the design team. "Hey, it don't work" doesn't help much. Let us know what, how, when, etc. If you think you've found a problem, try to make it happen again and again. And still if it only happens the once, let us know in case it happens with someone else. We're the Virtual Test Pilots and it'll be up to us to find the bugs and report them.

We'll be looking at performance, appearance and anything else the designers request us to take a look at. And we'll need to know the A-26 Invader. I'm going to upload the Pilot's Training Manual in pdf format so that everyone can be getting familiar with the aircraft. Also, it probably wouldn't hurt to download the Old Gzr's A-26 to start the familiarization process. (until we get our "real birds")

As far as system requirements go, as long as you're running FS 2004 (GW3), FSX or even FS 2002 you should be good to go. We'll need people with high, medium and lower end systems and a variety of component combinations. So as long as you can run one of the above versions of FS, we'd like your feedback. For the folks with FS 2002, keep in mind that we are building for FS 2004 & FSX. So, while your reports will be much appreciated, we can't guarantee that we'll fix any FS8 issues.

Additionally we need real life pilots. Just keep in mind that is a sim for fun and in the end that's what it's all about.

So, if you're still interested, post here with your system specs. Please keep in mind that this isn't about who's got the fastest comp on the block :d . Accuracy is what counts.

Mine are:

Homebuilt in 2002 (for CFS 3)
FS 2004 with Golden Wings 3 installed & running very stable
Win XP Home SP1
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ running at 1.66ghz
512mg RAM
Asylum FX 5200 (128mg & 61.76 drivers)
40g HD with about 3g remaining space

I have just recently upgraded my machine so the testing should be good here too.

Here is my specs...
Abit KN8 Ultra Motherboard with AMD 4000 Athlon 64XP chip
2+gig PC2700 RAM-hopefully will upgrade this to 4 gig ultra ram soon
560GB HD space with 400GB SATA drive designated for FS
EVGA 7300 GT NVIDA 512MB PCI Express vid card with dual monitor setup
Windows 2000 Pro
Soundblaster Live
CH Yoke, Pedals

LOL Tom, if we were doing this A-26 for FS4, your 286 would be great :)

Cheers
TJ

Hey do any of you guys run FSINN or have tried it out? I was thinking it would be great to do some testing on multiplayer and have some guys flying chase. Gnoop's P-47M would be a great chase plane. FSHost is OK but I know it can lag a bit. MAC tested FSINN a while back and it was pretty damn smooth.

I had posted these over in the Design forum some time ago, and someone else posted a link to them, but I cannot find them now.

Anyhow, here is a link to two beta test templates we have used, refined, and could be used to help test this project. These need to be refined more and enhanced but I hope they will give you a good start on coming up with something more thorough.

The most recent one of the Howard 500 project was done in MS Word and the other for an Aero Commander project was done using Notepad/Wordpad.

Don't know but Willy may still be recovering from some wild New Year's party. Ain't seen hide nor hair of him since.

I'm still around... had a round of self-inflicted FS problems that I've since taken care of and installed a new 250g HD to go with the old full 40g one. Plus rebuilding my old comp for my daughter (again) and other r/l stuff that has been eating up at my time. Heck, I let 3 days go by before installing that new Stratoliner of Jens!!! (not to mention the mass amounts of mesh that I'm d/ling and installing. I intend to mesh the FS world!)

That and I figured that it'd be a few weeks before we were ready to start testing ;)

I might be down for a day or so during the next week. I connect to the net via a homeLAN and internet connection sharing thru a router hub. Mrs Willy's comp is the one with the internet connection and she has a new comp on order. I'll have to get it all set up to the LAN so I might be down for a bit while fighting it and that DSL modem. :isadizzy:

Thanks to all of you who have shown interest in beta testing. As I said early on, I will leave the test team selection and criteria to Willy.

In my years of projects, we experience testers with many different perspectives, focus, equipment, and procedures for using the flight sim from startup to shut down.

It is this variety that helps us understand what a simulation may have overlooked as we developers have the same kinds of differences.

As many aspects of individual parts and models have been tested for accuracy, likeness, closeness, nearness, and ball park, some things have to be "cemented" in order to move forward. As such, some things you may discover may not be practical at this time to change, so we accept that.

Other things just break. Those we need to identify and fix. Some things work for us in development, but may not work well in your configuration or in legitimate processes. Those we will look at seriously.

The idea is for everyone to provide feedback in a structured way so that it can be evaluated, hopefully duplicated, and acted upon. Acted upon may mean recognizing the issue and correcting it, or accepting the issue as a nuance and not practical at this time to fix, or we'll leave it this way on the B model but look at a fix on the C model, if that comes about.

So, many actions will be based on the importance to the community and prevalence of the issue, or how far can we stray from realism and be satisfied with the model. There are times when we want to change something but simply cannot for whatever reason. That in no way demeans your effort to find the issue and is not a reflection on the value we place in you, the beta testers.

In advance, I thank all of you for the support and interest in this project, and whether or not you are on the beta team, I hope we deliver a product that will serve you well through many hours of simming.

With that said, I now leave the real task to Willy to ready the team for its work, and pleasure. :wavey:

Thanks to all of you who have shown interest in beta testing. As I said early on, I will leave the test team selection and criteria to Willy.

With that said, I now leave the real task to Willy to ready the team for its work, and pleasure. :wavey:

All those people asking Milton to be on the beta testing team aren't scoring any brownie points if ya know what I mean.:icon_lol:

Just to let everyone know, I'm going through the volunteers to try and get a solid team with a good variety of equipment and experience.

Greetings...
I'd be happy to contribute to the beta testing in whatever way would be helpful.

Dell XPS 400.820 (2.8GHZ) .DCT
256MB nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX
2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ
X-FI PCI sound card
Using FSX

Have ~2000 hrs of T-38 instructor pilot time BUT that was many moons ago. Have helped (albeit not a major player) with beta testing the FSX updates for the MAAM DC-3/C-47 and B-25 through the DC-3 Airways Virtual Airline. Began simming with FS2000 and really enjoy round engines. Looking forward to the A-26.

Hello Willy,

If you still have need for someone with a decidedly low-end system, then I'm your man!!

My specs (if you can call 'em that)::redf:

Asrock MB K7upgrade600 with a Sempron 2400+ CPU
2x512 Mb DDR 333 Ram
HDD 80 Gb's
Nvidia FX-5200 VGA-card with 128 Mb's
and finally my biggest headache lately: integrated AC97 soundcard in the VIA chipset of the MB

If and when you give me the OK, I swear not to make jokes about the Navy, or West-Flanders.... :icon_lol:

LOL jdirck....

Your system is lots better than mine so you should have absolutely no problems. :)

On another note, I have asked Willy to keep the team small, focused, and let's do our work quickly so we can get through the beta and move toward general release.

I know that many of you do your own tweaking to satisfy your personal requirements, and we encourage that, so no need to try to satisfy everyone on this release. We want to give you a good base and something reliable and efficient. After that, you can take it your own way.

We are still probably a week or so away from having all the components in place to start beta. Willy will contact the selected team when appropriate and we'll be off to the races.

Bomber_12th will post when the paint kit is ready and I'll have a test model for repainters available.

Enjoy the March Madness and by the time we get to the final four, we should be in pretty good shape.

The Paintkit is done, files saved in .psd and .psp formats, and I just sent it off to Milton - so painters get ready! Just a few things left to be done with the VC textures. ;)

Mr. Shupe,

Are you serious? I allways thought that designers of quality addons like yourself needed super-rocket-science-hyper-fast machines with loads of RAM and graphical cards that are computers on their own! If only to be able to work your magic on the gems you guys produce!

Well, learned something today I guess!

Anyway, thanks for the nice remarks about my system. Coming from a designer as astute as yourself, that was a nice way to start the day!

May the force be with all of you!

I realize I may be a little late on this, but I'd also like to help. I could not begin to tell whether it "flies right," but I can test things like frame hits with 32-bit vs. DXT3, whether certain things work with the Ctrl+E auto start (the default King Air turns the generators off w/ that method!), and so on. I can also check for any other glitches with model construction, mapping, etc.

Of course, if you tell me to set a certain set of engine/prop parameters at an assigned altitude, I can do that and report back with performance #'s, but I suspect you already have a skilled few selected for that.

The specs that count:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ @ 2.21GHz
1 Gig RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT
Jetway 939GT4-SLI-G

FS9 and FSX installed and running, with FS9 rendering 70+ FPS with default or PMStone planes and Fair Weather loaded.

The test will be starting soon. ;)

We've pretty much got our team picked and would like to thank all the volunteers. Just because someone didn't make the first cut is nothing against anyone. We do have a list of backups in case some of our original choices can't participate.

Also, don't expect any beta screenshots from the test team. This is a project by simmers for simmers and we're concentrating on getting her right for release. So, we've asked the beta testers to do their job anonymously for now with no screen shots. Any of those will be coming from Milton and the main team.

I just want to pop in here to say thanks to all the beta testers. The feedback, input and suggestions have been great! Lots of variety, lots of perspectives, and lots of fun.

Although we will not be able to do everything requested, we will fix the things we can and change the things we can.

I really appreciate the factual way the feedback was presented and the clarity with which you did that. I think we will be able to get through the changes this week and I hope we can expect release of the final version next weekend. All the team members have not weighed in yet so we shall see.

Thank you all for your efforts to make the A-26B a better product for SOH membership. And, thank you Willy for managing the process and coordinating all the responses. Great job everyone! :applause:

As usual, my optimism can sometimes get me carried away. Seems we will need a bit more time to complete all the changes and finalize all the components, all for the better of course. :wiggle:

So, not this weekend, but when we have her ready, you will be first to know. :mixedsmi:
