Milton, If I may, I would like ask that we dedicate this thread to Leon Louis and Heather Sherman. We know Leon is in a better place at that great paint hangar in the sky. The guys at the club haven't heard from Heather in a long while and it was known her health wasn't in the best. I hope and pray that she is doing ok and returns to our hobby soon. If she is no longer with us I hope she is with Leon, together painting a great canvas of sky.

Gentlemen, could you imagine how hot this bird would look if Heather or Leon were to put their sense of art and color on it's textures? I think they would be masterpeices of artwork.

Thank you, and with that, let your artwork begin.

preparing for the upcoming 'texturing marathon', I had dug out the tools, went after Bomber_12th's 'roadmap template' and did some warming up with the ol' GZR model in GMAX and unWrap3D.

Now that Milton is doing seven mile steps with the exterior modeling, I can already 'feel the increasing pressure' ;)

I still have lots of stuff to change with the exterior model, the details just getting started. But, as soon as I feel she is stabilized somewhat, I'll send the gmax source.

I can wait for the stabilized version Milton ;) Or I'll take the also the one that'll go for FDE development and will try to map the main parts like fuselage, wings and empennage as fast as possible so that the FM tests could be a tad bit less 'eye soring' ;)

Okay, let's communicate by email so we set some ground rules for control/update/communication of changes.

EDIT: Email and A-26B is headed to LSZB :)

EDIT 2: Folks, this model was started December 1st with calibration boxes. Today, Dec 25th it left NM, USA and is headed for Switzerland for texture mapping. The exterior model contains 292 objects/parts and is about 1.9MB in FS, and 28K polys. So, we are off to a decent start and now await the next phase of the project. Once Gnoopey and I are comfortable about the "goodness" of the mesh, and he starts, the gMax source will also be sent to stiz for the VC Interior model development.

Cheers to you Gnoopey :ernae:

Since Gnoopey has a full plate right now, I volunteered to step back in to do the texture mapping. We have the skins mapped and are trying a few alternatives to make improvements. Here is the "coat of many colors". Sorry, I had to use the g'kids water colors but they go well with the "flower power" colors of the late 50's and early 60's. :costumes:

The texturing is progressing very smoothly - I just finished laying the preliminary panel lines - still have to outline the fillets. Next up is the rivets, and now I have to find references on the rivet lines. If anyone has any diagrams, photos, or model photos that show the rivet lines that would be great!

The stars are just in there for inspiration. :d

(Some panel lines look as if they're cutoff, but that is just because of the model glare.)

Thank you guys, I'm very excited too! I've been laying some paint lately and thought that for those who like following the process might like to see some progress. There is still about 20-25 hours of time left to be spent on it, it is really just the base.

Some things that I've found from viewing the model now with paint is that the model shine should probably be only half of what it is currently, the model needs to be alpha channel compatible, and the windows still need texturing.

Bomber_12th

It's in FS9 Milton, and those shots of the glass look great!

There is also a bare metal scheme that I am testing out and it should provide a good base for most repaints, bare or not, though that will be under the paint brush for quite some time yet as well. This is just scratching the surface and there is plenty of things left to do...only 35 layers per texture so-far, so that leaves about 115 per texture left, lol.

That is SWEET, Bomber!!!:applause: :applause: I once visited the Commemorative Air Force when it was still in Harlingen, Texas and when it was also known as something else. Well anyway I saw an A-26 Hardnose there and the nose art was a characature of "Daisy Mae", (remember 'lil Abner?). Below the image of that fine young woman was the name "Daisey Mae". The plane was in superb condition, although I never saw it fly. The image of that A-26 sitll sticks in my mind and I think that skin would be a great candidate for this fine A-26 model that is comming together here.

Bomber_12th's nose art is in the paint so the DECAL is not being used here. As you can see, there is no impact to not using the decal for the nose art.

I think doing a wrap around shark mouth will be just fine with the normal mapping, especially since you have both sides of the nose, the bottom of the nose, and the front of the nose, you won't need to worry about stretching.

thudpilot
January 27th, 2007, 12:09
Milton,

A question from someone still trying to learn. :redf:

Will the nose art decal have a possible negative impact on the alignment of a few anti-glare panels
that some texture artists will want to paint in? From all appearances that section on the top where
it spikes up might overlap a bit too much.

Well you would know as you have the model and the basic texture set to see but I don't have that stuff.

Bomber_12th
January 27th, 2007, 12:38
Cliff, the decal will be transparent in areas around the nose art so only the nose art will show in that area of the decal. The base main texture below will cover all other aspects in that area as well as the rest of the aircraft. I aslo believe that the decal will be extended up to the next line or two on the nose, the same level as the point on that 'spike' or higher.

Those decals are as the best thing since sliced bread for painters. Do your basic paint and then have all the fun you want with the decal bitmap.

Just to give an idea of how it works, I'm attaching some bits of the B-26 Merc Air Marauder (Dave Eckart's) that I reworked Windrunner's RAF paint for.

1) the basic decal. On this aircraft it shows on both sides.

2) this the alpha channel panel for it. All the pure black areas will be clear see-thru in FS.

3) Left side in the sim

4) Right side in the sim.

Pretty simple and beats having to paint the nose art directly onto the fuselage bitmaps

Looks like you boys are doing a great job. My old boss back in 1971 had a A26, two of them actually. One was in pieces (gear up landing) the second one was in fine shape. It wasn't flown on a regular basis but once in a while he would haul it out. The bomb bay was converted for comfort seating and the entrance was a set of airstairs built into the bomb bay doors. Love to know where it went after he died.

GP, I ask that you ease up a bit please. We haven't even gotten the base textures done. When they are done, the paint kit will be prepared. Then everyone will have the tools the do the job right taking advantage of all the details that will be done for you.

At best we are 6 weeks away from release, probably 8 realistically. We are working as fast as we can go to deliver a quality product. All will be available in due time.

Easing up.....I was/am just asking questions here nothing more. I thought when I said I would help with the painting I would be making or helping make the paint kit for the aircraft. I guess it was not clear to me what my part would be. Now I know where I stand. Now i'm off to play some more Battlefield 2 (that game is fun).:engel016:

Closer yet to the final exterior...just finished adding exhaust stains, access panels, some paint scraping, leaks, more rivets, a new propeller spinning texture, new engine textures (thanks to Thudpilot!), and more. The wheel wells and doors are done, and the interior of the exterior is in progress. :)

Now I can't wait to see what this looks like with a pilot and perhaps some crew figures too! :d

Milton Shupe
February 14th, 2007, 19:41
Yes sir. :wavey: I know it is hard to be patient seeing the pics we post. As soon as the base textures and all the detail layers are completed (around 200 layers :isadizzy: ), the paint kit will be assembled for all interested parties. Bomber_12th is working feverishly on wrapping up the exterior layers this week. After that at some point, a paint kit will be constructed and made available.

He is also doing all the interior textures so he is very busy with things right now. I assure you all that we want the kit in your hands as badly as you want it but we will not make it available until the details are ready and everything is right. We are still a good way off from beta release. You will have time to make your contribution once the tedious work is done.

I really look forward to the many interesting schemes I know are coming and we want to make sure that we do your work justice as well. I suspect among Bomber_12th, me, ROS, DCC, Sparks, DDawson and Fliger747, we are investing around 140-160 hours per week in this project. That does not include many hours invested by people collecting and disseminating reference material, pictures and fact sheets. ROS and I are in a full court press on the VC and we will be at that for awhile yet.

So hang in there ... we are making great strides toward the finish line.

Bomber_12th
February 17th, 2007, 14:48
Okay, I just had to try this...

I think it would look great on a gunless, turretless Invader - perhaps an executive transport. I'd like to add an N-number and there is still some tuning left to be done to make it look more realistic with regards to dirt, grime, and shading. Well on the way to a completed paintkit!

I am confused :kilroy: but of course I stay confused especially when it comes to trying to figure out how to paint an airplane.

Oh well, my question is why are there 9 seperated fuselage sections on only 1 .bmp texture section? All those compressed parts are just (too) awfully cramped after being put onto just one .bmp texture section. Isn't that going to make it very difficult to add or paint very fine or high details on the fuselage?? Should there not have been at least two fuselage .bmp textures sections rather than just one ???

On the other hand each engine nacelle (and there are only 2 of them) has its own individual .bmp texture section? Now why is that????

Will somebody please set me straight? Just what is it that I am missing here???? :isadizzy:

ted9999

Bomber_12th
March 18th, 2007, 21:28
What it comes down to Ted is trying to keep all of the textures to the same scale. To do this for the fuselage and not break it in half would make for either a very small texture size or an overall .bmp size that is too big for FS to except. The other part is that when textures are applied over a tight curve they are usually streched. If the textures were to be applied on only both the left and right sides of the fuselage, the top and bottom of the almost square fuselage would be extremely blurry as the textures would stretch from the sides straight to the middle. That is why there are sepperate areas for the top and bottom and front as well.

Now, with a perfectly round (or just about) surface, a texture can be applied nicely by just using one texture wrapped around the part. This is the case with egnine cowls and nacelles.

What I suggest is to do a test with using only the wire frame included in the paintkit, that way you can easily see where one texture area stops and another begins.

ted9999
March 18th, 2007, 21:44
Bomber,

Thank you. I think I understand the reasoning behind doing it that way but why not make two fuselage .bmp texture sections with only four or five larger fuselage part images on them rather than all nine fuselage part images on just one cramped .bmp texture section?

That way it would help a repainter by giving him a greater ability to paint in much higher detailed panels, parts, more rivits and things like instruction stencils letters, numbers etc etc???

If it can be done it really should be done now rather than wait too long.

Am I making any sense here, or am I the only one who sees it that way???

:redf:

ted9999

Bomber_12th
March 18th, 2007, 22:34
Personally, I think the decision to make the textures the way they are is the best way possible - more textures means more load time and frame rate drops. The way the textures are mapped is very common among FS aircraft mapping...just check aircraft like the MAAM examples, WOP aircraft, and other Milton Shupe aircraft, ect, all the same style.

BTW, this original decision was made more than two months ago now with texture work that has taken just as long to get it to the way it is currently (350+ layers).

ted9999
March 18th, 2007, 23:57
- more textures means more load time and frame rate drops.

Okay but out of curiosity why not put the 2 engine nacelles on just 1 texture.bmp rather than 2 of them, and put the 9 fuselage parts on 2 texture.bmp's rather than cramping them all together on just 1 texture.bmp??

That way the number of texture.bmp's will remain the same and repainters will have a lot less cramped space or room to work with in order to add more and clearer looking details to the fuselage.

At least it sounds logical.

If you disagree with how the results were produced discuss it with your mate.
The end product is all that should be of concern.
The paint mapping was a collaboration between Bomber and Milton. They way they did it,was in their view the best way.
To try and tell them in an open forum that they should have done it another way is belittling them and their free work for the benefit of the community.

Sir,

I was not aware of those ground rules.

However:

(1) Each question was asked in a tackful manner.
(2) Not once did I attempt to belittle either Mr. Shupe or Bomber.
(3) I asked the questions only in hope of making the ability to detail the fuselage easier for the benefit of all members who might be interested in repainting the airplane.

May everybody learn something from your response:

Your questions were in no way offensive. Bomber's answers were informative to me as a person trying to learn way too much in a short time. I see no reason why, in a thread explaining the design process, that those types of questions would have no place.

Yeah, lol, gonna have to use artistic license for that part :costumes: Yep, those are the real stains on the bird, gives it a "rough" look :) Cheers Guys!! :ernae:

Guys, I've been quiet:kilroy: in this forum if for no other reason than the fact that I am not a designer or a painter, but this project just makes me want to stand up and cheer!:jump: From the model, sound, and interior development, to the textures, I have watched and marvalled at what our special community is capable of doing as a group. How much time did it take for you to do a photoreal skin like that?
Do you take the pictures yourself?

Ted9999

It's about 80% done i'd say Ted and I work on it an average of 2-3 hours at a time. Usually I can do one in 6-8 hours sitting but i'm trying to get this one as perfect as I can.

I wish I could take the pictures myself, lol, that would make things much easier :) The hard part for me is taking for example, a wing that is seen from this angle http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0938749/M/ has to be manually adjusted to fit a flat wing texture section, that has to be done to all parts usually, sometimes for profile shots you can get a shot of a side that may not need much adjusting. Then when you can't get picks of certain parts, you have paint in those by hand or mouse, lol, trying to match the colors of the skin :isadizzy: :d

Just thankful for such a beautiful model to put some paint on, that was the tough work! :applause:

Do you ever cut sections of large metal areas from the pictures of other entirely different airplanes
to be pasted on the frame work of one particular airplane you are working on at that time :ques:

This is a wip of a Navy JD-1KD. Lots of work remains to be done. Seems such a shame to start them factory fresh, and then have to add weathering effects.:kilroy:

You know waht kind of sucks? Was on Hickam AFB the other day. Went past the PACAF HQ Building(don't get by that way to often.) and guess what's sitting in the front yard on a stick? an A-26. Not sure if any pictures would have helped in anyway or not.
