Freeware FSX SP2 model of the popular De Havilland Tiger Moth trainer aircraft. This is a modern representation of the Australian built models as you may find flying today therefore it includes a few extra features not found on the original.

Rick, I guess the "X" from FSX stands for "extra", so I presume it works in both sims :icon_twi:

There numerous FS9 Tiggies out there - freeware from Bill Lyons and one from Wozza I believe. Payware from Just Flight and Aeroplane Heaven.

All are worthy, although I like Bills best - just has loads of atmosphere.

Thank you for all the kind words and the screenshots. The Tiger Moth was definitely a learning experiment to see what it would be like to create an FSX aircraft which is very different from making scenery. For some stupid reason though I choose an aircraft with ribbed wings (lots of polys) and control wires everywhere (even more polys) but eventually I managed to pull it all together. There are things I would probably do differently (and there are errors in the model) but as they say "practice makes perfect".

Thanks also to all those who have donated. Very much appreciated :)

P.S. As Cody says check out the baggage. If you have downloaded a piglet plane you will notice he usually has an area for dog treats. The baggage is my homage to the great flying piglet :) .

Flys very nice, first takeoff and landing were very smooth with good gauge response. But I can't get the Animation Manager screen to display in 2D or any other view. I've been able to get things turned on and off by playing with cowl flap keys and/or controller assignments for the cowl flaps, but it's inconsistent. The only visual anomalie I've noticed is the pilot and passenger are not displaying completely in "center of the seat" cockpit views for either. Are they supposed to be visible from within the cockpit? From the passenger seat i can see the back of the pilots head and it is displaying correctly. It's like I'm looking through a portion of their goggles which are moving left to right and back. What does the Animation Manager screen look like?

(On Vista 64 with Quad Core and Nvidia card - for the record)

Rick

I have Acceleration package as well, running in DX9, I don't think that's it. The funny thing is the plane looks better than some paywares and seems to handle like a dream, another perfect plane for touring low and slow.

I must have screwed something up. The manual states Shift-3 should bring up the manager. I'm beginning to think I made a faulty download or screwed the install somehow, or both, but geez, the instructions were so simple and straight forward. Open the zip, double click the .exe and follow the auto-installer instructions, what could be easier, duh!

I'm going to uninstall, get a fresh D/L and reinstall. Right after I take a nap, LOL.

Have you checked the manual, the goggles is actually part of the Animation manager, selecting Show pilot in VC. You have to deselect to get rid of the goggles. However, you can't because you can't bring up the Animation Manager. Shift + 3 brings it up. Check the panel.cfg?

Thanks Anthony very much for a fine airplane. It shows a new excellent talent, with the patience to get it right and with significant detail.

Besides the excellent exterior model and interior VC one is treated with details such as ribbed wings, realistic cables, hose, rigging, door locks and luggage area internals and fasteners.

The paints are very well done, and reflections do not obliterate the paint detail.

I like the little spring loaded airspeed indicator on the left wing strut, a nice additon.

Occupants may not be for everyone, but to me they add a great deal to this planes realism. The leather jackets and hats seem very much in keeping with this plane. Seldom have I seen such realistic occupants, and good looking ones besides. The pilot sports a barely detectable 5 o'clock shadow and the lady passenger, although devoid of any other female
attributes has a beautiful face even behind those big goggles.

Congratulations on a very successful project.

I had an issue that if I chose the all yellow trainer Tiger Moth VHDHA first and then after some flying time tried to choose a different Moth scheme it would always return the same paint, ie the all yellow one.
The texture folder (called just "texture") for the yellow trainer has a different texture.cfg inside. Replacing it with a .cfg from one of the other texture folders cured the issue.

Sorry to hear some are having problems with the animation manager. I'm not sure why you guys are having problems. It doesn't appear to be acceleration/OS or DX9/DX10 related though.

Attached is a picture of how it should look. This is an external view. The animation manager is the panel on the left of screen.

Shift+2 should bring up the 2D GPS. Does this still work? Shift+3 should then bring up the animation manager. Unless, of course, you've changed the key assignments to bring up 2D panels. Personally I use F2 and F3 but that's because I've changed the key assignments.

If your still not getting it to show it may be worth trying to change the position it appears. Open the panel.cfg and change position=6 to either position=0 (top left of screen) or position=8 (bottom right of screen)

[Window02]
BACKGROUND_COLOR=0,0,0
size_mm=217,312
pixel_size=217,312
position=6
visible=0
ident=ANIMATION_MANAGER_PANEL
gauge00=Avionicsgauge!ants_AnimList,0,0,217,312

It is possible to turn on and off the pilot (rear seat) and passenger (front seat). By default the pilot will not appear in the VC but in external view and the passenger will appear in both VC and external view. You can get the pilot to appear in the VC and turn off the passenger if you like to fly from the front seat.

Thanks Roger for the texture.cfg fix. I will include it in the next build.

Have you checked the manual, the goggles is actually part of the Animation manager, selecting Show pilot in VC. You have to deselect to get rid of the goggles. However, you can't because you can't bring up the Animation Manager. Shift + 3 brings it up. Check the panel.cfg?

2nd install was the charm, I can bring up the manager now and just need to get familiar with what's what. I missed the picture of it on my first run through of the manual, when I got to the credits page I figured that was all and didn't notice there were 2 more pages that had illustrations. Should have read the table of contents first, Doh!

Got a 70 mile hop planned for this morning on my round the world jaunt and plan to use the T-Moth. Man, that extra wing seems to give it tremendous lift, also requires a little more thought on planning the landing to keep from over running short fields.:icon_lol:

PS: some of the screenies you guys have posted are masterpieces!

Just completed my first full flight and it went great.

But has anyone noticed: The prop rotates the opposite of most other planes pulling the nose to the right on takeoff per the manual and I found this to be the case. However, in flight when trimmed in and in level flight, the plane's drift was always to the left, does that make sense?

I turned off all weather and winds to insure I wasn't bucking a head, tail, or crosswind.

From the accompanying pilot's notes

19. Take Off
Prop torque will tend to turn the aircraft to the right (remember prop spins
opposite to most other aircraft) so a bit of left rudder may required to
keep aircraft straight.

I'm enjoying this one so much, I thought I'd have a go at repainting it. Painting of any kind isn't a strong point with me, so I don't know how this will come out, but so far using the excellent paint kit supplied I have this

http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa147/Jetstreamsky/FSX/GAOJKs.jpg

The original is here http://www.airliners.net/photo/De-Havilland-DH-82A/0872419/M/

There's lots of detail missing, the red edging around every surface for example and the nose needs quite a bit more doing.

Does anyone know what the font for the registration is, it's very square and appears both sides, top and bottom?

Ant, I finally got some time with your Tiger Moth today. Let me say none of the accolades stated here are overstatements, this is the first airplane that has performed this well and looked so good in FSX on my system in a long time, that I had to take a dedicated flight. I had the privilidge of flying in a Tiger Moth owned by Rev. A. Paul Wilson, who flew out of the Flying Circus Aerodrome in Bealton, VA. Its US registration is N-8232, I shall begin a repaint once I locate my prints using that excellent Paint Kit provided. :ernae:

This is better than much of the payware aircraft I have for FSX and that is no bull hockey.

BUG FIX
======

A few people have noticed that the turn indicator is not working. Well, it isn't. My silly mistake. I edited the aircraft.cfg and there is no vacuum pressure to drive it. The fix is simple. Open the aircraft.cfg and look for the following lines:

[vacuum_system]
max_pressure=0
vacuum_type=3 //Type: 0=None, 1=Engine pump (default), 2=Pneumatic, 3=Venturi

Change the max_pressure=0 to max_pressure=5. The gauge will now work.

I will be releasing a V1.1 update in a week or two which will include this and a few other bug fixes. I'll also have a look at tweaking the flight dynamics although FD's still seem like mystic voodoo to me :) .

Hi all,

This moth is coming along really well. I'm loving all the paint schemes that are bobbing up and have flown it many times. It is wonderful - the prop swing effect is brilliant and it is definatly payware quality - about the same standard as the A2A cub without accusim.
If any one has enough time/can be bothered, I'd love to see a scheme of G-AHOO,

Is anyone working on a ZK-ARZ paint? I'm thinking of trying to do it myself, but I'm a slow painter so it could be a bit before I would have it finished, so I just want to be sure someone else isn't doing one before I bother spending a lot of time doing it only to find someone else finished and released one before I could.

So, anyone doing that paint, or should I start to try it on my own?

No problems here Rowdy. Does the one out on the interplane strut also read zero? Some models like the Lysander simulate the effect of ice on the pitot head which can give a zero ASI reading, probably not the case here. Maybe it's something in the aircraft or panel config, or just a slight corruption during installation. I'd try a reinstall of the Tiger and see if that fixes it.

Maybe one of the slight bugs i found. I originally intended that if you have the pitot cover on it would prevent the airspeed indicator working but I messed it up. If you have the wheel chocks on it will stop the airspeed indicator working (I think it is the wheel chocks, could be the tiedowns, I really can't remember that well). Check to make sure the wheel chocks are off.

As Spaceweevil also asks, is the external wind driven airspeed indicator working?

Version 1.1 (due for release sometime next week) should fix this.

Bomber_12th
February 6th, 2010, 16:20
Not sure if it is the case with you, Rowdy, but if the temperature is below freezing, when you fly, the airspeed indicator will likely not work, since it would be registered as having the pitot tube as frozen. This has caused the airspeed needle to remain at zero on many other aircraft I have used in the sim, requiring the use of pitot heat, if the aircraft has it.

Edit: Just noticed that SpaceWeevil already mentioned it.

Anthony, I'd just like to add that while I have yet to say anything in the forums, I have been greatly enjoying this aircraft since the day it was released - thank you!

It's a lot better than some aircraft that I've paid for in the past.

Again many thanks,
Ian.

Just a funny side note, my photobucked account warned me today that I've already used 89 procent of this months bandwidth (10GB). That's because all the screenies of my paints have had such a huge amount of viewers here and at aussiex.org. This is the first time it happened and I've used photobucket for four years:icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol:.

Last April, I went for a flight in G-AHOO in formation with eight other moths - I guess it has been an inspiration to make the moth my favourite aircraft, being the first aeroplane I ever flew.
I would really love to see some of the Tiggies I flew with take shape in FSX. Bushpilot has already kindly done G-AHOO for me. If anyone has enough time, or enthusiasm for Ant's wonderful moth - I'd love to see any one of these beautiful machines to be repainted:

Photo after my first flight in G-AHOO last spring.

It's a lot to ask, and call me lazy - but I am 15 and just don't have the time with school and exams etc... I would if I could, but my repainting skills are primitive and I get about as far as repainting the RealAir Spitfire and I'm out of my depth.
It would mean a lot to me to relive my flights in G-AHOO - and I would gladly pay money to see all of these aeroplanes take to the skies in FSX.

Oh well Peter 'I+d love to see any one of these beautiful aeroplanes appear on the sim. Maybe one day when i've enough time and no bl***y homework I'll settle down and give some of these a crack.
- Yes this was terrfic fun. The owner of G-AHOO leads his plane in fully Tiger-Moth display team "The Tiger Nine" - that perform at airshows across the UK. He was practising at his private airstrip in Wiltshire last April and rung up my farther at 8 in the morning and asked if I wanted a flight. My my dad told me - I pretty much exploded with excitement.
Their typical nine-ship display routine is as follows,

All aircraft take-off in 3 groups of three and form up - holding off for eight minutes approx. First run-in at 3 hundred feet in diamond nine shape. Second pass at 200 feet, then line up opposite corwd line. The formation reaches 90 knots, then does a 9-ship bomb-burst, a really impressive spectacle. The individual aircraft then make independant passes at 100 feet along the crowd-line, often with a wing-wobble. Sometimes, once all aircraft but G-AHOO have landed it commences a solo aerobatic routine, of a stall-turn, loop etc..
I'm glad to say I've been in the front seat whilst doing this. The feelings were incredible.

Anyone fancy doing my favorite ? G-AOGS -- Silver and Post Office red - the last Tiger owned by Luton Flying Club....and the first Tiger I ever flew in -- only problem is - it DID have the Spin Strakes.

Also the three London Gliding Club tugs based at Dunstable in the mid 60s.

G-AKXS,G-ANFC and G-AOEL - all had neat Esso stickers on the tail that read "When Tow Ropes Fail use Tigers Tail" and FC and EL had the little
tiger tail give aways that Esso gave attached to the interplane struts.

Hello Mirage,

Thank you very uch for your informative video. It will help many virtuual pilot.

The Anthony's Tiger Moth is a good trainer. I use it to become familiar with the mixture control at altitude. If the control of the mixtuure is good, the Tiger engine run smooth. If the maixture is not adequate, the eengine run rough. You hear it. So listen to your Tiger (smile)

Have a good virtual flight.

Thank you to all the people who have posted nice comments and thanks also to all those who've created the wonderful repaints. Thanks also to those who have been kind enough to make a donation.

As Jaykae says version 1.1 is now available (the download should be 70 odd MB, the downloaded says 70.6MB even though the zip is 72.3MB) which is about 5MB more than V1.0, filename for V1.1 is antsTMV11.zip versus antsTMV1.zip for V1.0).

All repaints for V1.0 are 100% compatible with V1.1. I did add some texture to one of the texture sheets but it is not one that people would use in a repaint.

If you have added some repaints make a copy of the aircraft.cfg before running the installer. Then run the installer and then edit the new aircraft.cfg to add in the [fltsim] entries for your repaints and you should be good to go.

There should be no need to uninstall V1.0 and no need to reinstall the repaints (except for reentering the [fltsim] lines into the aircraft.cfg). Note: I have made changes to the aircraft.cfg so don't just replace the new V1.1 aircraft.cfg with the old V1.0 aircraft.cfg. Copy across the [fltsim] entries. Also note that VH-BAL and G-BMPY are included in V1.1, these were available separately beforehand.

Here is a full list of everything changed:

V1.1 adds the following:
- Fixed the turn rate indicator
- Fixed the airspeed indicator so it reads 0 if pitot cover left on
- Removed stall warning
- Fixed texture fallback problems with VH-DHA
- Added missing texture region on ants_DH82_Levers texture (hook on throttle control)
- Filled 3D mesh holes in wings near ailerons
- Turning off com radio will turn off avionics master switch
- Added lubber line to compass
- Added a cover to cover the cockpit when parking the aircraft (see animation manager). Note: close doors and remove pilot and passenger before using the cover.
- Changed compass pointer to a more accurate model
- FDE - removed the tendency of the aircraft wings to self level in a turn
- FDE - changes to the spin characteristics, left hand spins seem to work much better than right hand spins. I don't know why.
- FDE - changed side slipping to allow greater yaw. Need to drop the leading wing to maintain the side slip.
