View Full Version : Heck of a time to reinstall!?

Sorry to be a bother, but I've had to do a reinstall of O.F.F. And boy what a time I would have to choose to do it too.
So without the Installation Sticky, I can't hunt this down myself.
The reinstall goes fine, I reload CFS3, patch it to 3.1, and load up Phase 2, and all the subsequent patches to get her up to snuff. That goes fine too! Right click on the game exe file and set to Compatability Mode with XP with SP2 as the choice, but when I launch the game, the darn intro screen goes and changes my 28 inch wide screen from 1920 x 1200 to 1024 x 768, and I can't get to the buttons at the bottom of the main screen, and I have to start Task Manager, and end the OFF process and my desktop is reset to 1024 x 768.
I've been searching through the game files for OFF and CFS3 to see if I can find the file to tweak to let me at least set it up before launching the game.
Oh, the configuration manager has no effect on the mainscreen setting. Reguardless of what resolution I choose it still locks into 1024 x 768, and I can see the into movie, and credits, but can't get into the game from lack of having the buttons visible.
Any suggestions are most appreciated, and again I do apologise for having to ask for assistance but without the Installation info that was here, I'm running out of ideas.
Thanks in advance!

not sure but I am thinking that you are supposed to run CFS3 atleast one time befor installing OFF. Could this be the issue?

Everything was working BUT now I've got a display hassle too.. it sets things to 1024x768.. and worse.. now every time I visit the controls to set up the joystick the screen hangs up.. no error messages .. nothing but a dead screan with controls keys window inert/ liveless:banghead:. If I dont try and change the controls it works.. I've cycled the power on my computer 3 times now.. one more after a reinstall and thats it for me..

I got the install instructions from a copy at work here that I was sending out to another community member.
1. You must install and run atleast one time CFS3!! Also make sure you have updated it to 3.1.
2. Install the OOFp2 Files in this oreder:
a. Overflandersfieldsphase2releaseV1.0.exe
b. Overflandersfieldsphase2Vskins1.0.exe
c. Overflandersfieldsphase2VidsV1.0
3. After you have installed the 3 core files you must then install the other files in this order:
a. Latest update patch, currently 1.9
b. Latest hotfix

Don't know about you, but my desktop is set to the maximum resolution my monitor can handle. In my case 1680X1050, because the Video Card could handle much more, but that's the limit for my monitor

Desktop (min 1024X768) checked

Hylander: You need to fly a mission in CFS3, prior to installing phase 2
Gandi

set to Compatability Mode with XP with SP2 as
are you installing on Vista?
If so then OFF needs installing in safe mode then it needs admin' rights as well as XP compatability....can't remember the exact details though, sorry

Thanks fellas,
Yes, did the install according to the instructions as per vortex for OFF.
Installed CFS3 and the 3.1 update, and did a freeflight mission aroung the city of London, blasting everything with rockets bombs and 8 50 cals in the P-47D.
THIS IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EUREKA!!!!!!!!
As per gimpy, the two choices in the lower left corner of the screen where the resolution options are is what I can't get to, and I'll be darned if I can remember how the heck I did this the last time.
Gandi,
Yes I am installing in Vista x64 bit. I have been running the game fine for a few months, and after I updated all my drivers, I was having some goofy sound issues so I figured it best to re-install all of my simulators, and my daughter's games for her while I was at it.
As far as installing it, I've learned that turning off UAC, and applying some of Blackviper's Vista tweaks, and setting up CFS3 and OFF to XP compatability mode, negates the safemode issue. I didn't have to mess with safemode the last time I installed it back in the spring.
I probably should have tested OFF before zapping it, but I sometimes just don't know when to leave well enough alone.:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:
So I think I'll just uninstall everything, and do a fresh install from scratch, and have CCleaner do double duty beforehand to make sure every reference of CFS3 and OFF are expunged.

This is the culprit! Can't get to these options to change them. My native resolution is 1920 x 1200. So it should look pretty darn small on the desktop like it did before. Once I entered the main screen, all else was normal, but I can't get to the main screen options or enter the workshops.

Check your DPI monitor setting. Should be 96. Don't know about vista but XP path is Control panel --> Display --> Settings --> Advanced --> General.

I would try changing my desktop to like 1200X900, See if the workshop is acessible then. Change'em then, THEN go 1920 x 1200 :kilroy:

Reguardless of what I do, this is what I get for a mainscreen:http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll37/Conrad_B/OFFMainscreen.jpg
This is after a complete re-installation, and using CCleaner to root out any and all references to OFF and CFS3.
And when I use task manager to end the process, it leaves my desktop at 1024 x 768 resolution, and I have to reset it to it's native 1920 x 1200.
So I'm a little bit stumped on this one.
I think I'll take a breather and take my fully restored old 1966 Lone Star out to the lake, and hook into some 20+lb channel cats. Who knows, maybe a pike or bass will hit.

Are you using the in-game configuration manager or the "configuration tool" icon (the one that looks like a wrench) that is installed on the desktop? I used the icon installed on the desktop to reconfigure my resolution when it went too big for my screen. After you click on the icon, click File, then Change Display Options. This should allow you to set your resolution to your preferred setting without having to actually load the game.

Yep. Doesn't matter what I set it to, as it defaults to the above pic reguardless of what I set it to in the configuration tool.
Fishing is good although it's a little chilly on the water. So far I have 3 catfish, between 18 and 25lbs, and actually have a couple bluegill that are keepers.

Patience grasshopper, set your "off menu screen res" in workshop to "desktop" and P2 will play out at your desktop resolution.

Never click on joystick "properties" in-game. Just calibrate/test from "game controllers" in control panel or the equivalent to that if you've got vista. Call it "mine" in-game but don't touch that properties button.

Are you sure you've checked your screen DPI (dots per inch) setting is at 96 ? You may have it on "large size" 120 or something ?

Oh sensei (catch 22.. ) "Patience grasshopper" .??? :costumes:.. However.. I am now despairing ....:banghead:.. The OFF thing now has different sizes of screen which appear at different places but at least the 'flying stuff' is the right size and it doesnt reset my display parameters every time.. BUT:banghead: now I have problems with the stick.. I can set up the parameters in Sidewinder Central.. nice.. but as soon as we get into OFF that's all over and I have flaccid stick (forcefeedback off) or flaccid stick jumping all over the place.. (I used to be able to re 'force' it going the calibration route in 'Controls'. but that now, for some reason shuts the system down??? )
Mine (?) doesnt seem to be able to remember whether or not I want FFB but
I have a microsoft force feed back two.. the 'X08' version.. any advice .. Please
Mine doesnt seem to be able to remember whether or not I want FFB but
I dont think that there's any point flying it with 'silly' force feed back.. (the most obvious forces being those on the ailerons and the elevator which is why flying in turbulence is so interesting!) so
Please can anyone tell me how to make the MSFFB2 work with OFF .. or if I have to buy another stick can anyone tell me which ones are OFF compatible.. :banghead:

Okay. Try going to control panel. Select Display. 1) Click on the Settings tab, then the Advanced button. Click on the General tab, if not already selected. Adjust DPI settings to decrease your font size (96 dpi or less). Or, try 2) In control panel select display, click on the appearance tab. Select Font size text box. Make sure font size is set to normal. 3) Your last option. Again, select display in control panel. Click on the Themes tab and make sure you have not somehow changed your default theme to something new.
Just thought of something else. Try this first. Go back to the CFS3 configuration tool icon on your desktop. When it opens, click File, then "Custom Settings." Click Okay on the confirmation box. This will take you to something called "Parameter Editor for Image Quality." You should see a tab named "Window." Click on that and select "Overrides." You will see a lot of items with check boxes. On the left hand side, check the boxes for disable 1600X1200, disable 1280X1084, and disable 1024X768.
That's all I've got. Sorry if this does not help you. :banghead:

Sorry. One more suggestion. Try booting your computer into safe mode and either running the game program or the configuration tool. See if that works.

Just finished installing OFF onto my Vista 64 rig, and these are the additional steps I had to take above an beyond the standard install process.
Most important: Run every installer - including the CFS3 installer - as administrator. Right click on the item and select Run as administrator. This single step resolves most of the install problems I ran across when first trying to get this beastie going .
Once CFS3 is installed, when you run it that first time... change the video settings to your preferred ones then. Before installing OFF. OFF seems to import those settings during the install. At least it did for me.
Once OFF and all the updates are installed, select the shortcut for OFF and in the compatibility tab select XP compatability mode, and down the bottom - run as administrator.
After all that, the beastie should run. I had to register the visual basic dll as well, but theres instructions for that on Polovskis site I think. Hope that helps.

Ok guys, alles ist gut jezt. Und I can now go aus mit mein Albatros und shot zie Englander, und zie Frenchmen in zie back!
Actually, this darn widescreen LCD takes some getting used to. I'm still after 9 months in CRT mode. I had to force a HDTV resolution of 1778 x 1080 or some oddball size, and also activate a screen sizing utility to get it work, and I could then get into the menus and go to workshop, and change the 1024 x 768 to the proper setting so I can get into the game. The new drivers for the video cards, and motherboard and sound setup keep me pluggin' away at close to 60fps pretty solidly. Just a couple little hiccups when new planes showed up in the middle of combat. But no big deal, it's still pretty darn smooth.
Also, the DPI was set at 125, and I did change it 96. Just to be on the safe side.
This is the monitor I use: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254026
Great for games, and since I usually need to take my glasses off to read now, (near sighted) I can do any reading or typing and not worry about the print.

Thanks! The thing that sold me outside of the price for what you get, is the 3ms timing of the monitor. Most of the widescreens will vary between 5 and as high as 16 ms, so my bro's son who is a computer whiz recommended this one, and the picture is just great. Unlike the other widescreens I looked at, which had fuzzy looking images, this one is clear and very sharp in it's rendering comparatively.

I think that was probably your main problem. I recall that DPI at other than 96 causes problems (you cant get to the OFF menues, desktop icons jumble after the game etc.) as discussed in the FAQ

Actually the setting in Workshop was set to 1024 x 768, and I changed it to the Desktop min 1024 x 768, and all is fine. I just reset the DPI to 125 to test it, and it's fine.
But if it's been an issue for some in the past, it's still a valid option to try.
