Very awesome!

He finally made it over the top edge of that series of mountains, riding the thermals back and fourth.

Must be nice to have mountains like that to fly around!!!!

Beautiful!

Now I want to give soaring a try in FSX. There's the Pirate, there is something for winch-starts...but which freeware scenery offers an airfield and detailed surroundings in a...dunno...50km radius?

Bjoern, I have some advises, all freeware of course:

- first of all, your region of choice should be Switzerland or Austria, because the Alps will offer fantastic surroundings, even with default textures

- you should install, if not already done, the freeware LOD11 mesh from C30S, which covers the whole Alps (France, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria), here: http://c30s.alpes.gratisim.fr/
You might want to download the Glaciers sceneries from that same page (those glaciers are located in the Sion valley, between Sion and Ulrichen, very easy to spot).

- you should get the freeware FS9 landclass for Switzerland, filename ebch3tot.zip. Yes, a landclass from FS9 works well in FSX :)

- you should install the mountain mod from Arnaud Clere, which modifies the rendering of the mountains, here: http://www.gratisim.fr/annonces/85-textures-rocheuses-des-montagnes-pour-fsx
(get the lcloopup.zip file)
If you need to know what does that do, just have a look here: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=29447
There are all the comparison screenshots you need.

- get the Aerotow module for FSX, in order to get a slightly smarter towing aircraft (works like AiCarriers, more or less)

- get the CumulusX! module, it creates ridge lift (positive and negative) depending on winds and mountain shapes, dynamically !

Finally, head to Sion or Meiringen Mil with your favorite glider (Pirat or FSX default) and have some fun exploring the area.

No need for that; have UTX. :d

Yeah, I read that thread. Hope it plays well with UTX.

On the site for CumulusX...

...was also WinchX, which is more what I had in mind. ;) :d

Last objective: Find some airfield sceneries for gliding.

But merci beaucoup so far, Daube!

Along with the payware Aerosoft Discus, there's a couple of excellent freeware gliders worth flying

LAK Genesis 2 http://www.flightsim.com/kdl.php?fid=129851

and patch http://www.flightsim.com/kdl.php?fid=130064

and a whole bunch of gliders at Wolfgang Piper's site, but especially the LET Blanik L-13 at http://www.fsglider.de/p_e.htm
