I'm not a morning person, but you gotta do what ya gotta do right?

Enjoy these pics from work today. We had a Delta B767 (heavy jet yay) in the pattern for a few hours this morning and this afternoon. C130's from Minneapolis came up to play as well!!

Equipment used: Canon XTi with my new wider angle 15-85mm IS USM and my zoom lens, the Tamron 70-300mm without IS

Any questions, feel free to ask...

Awesome! :applause:

How are you liking that 15-85? I may opt for it instead of a 12-24 and 28-135.

Very nice pictures. I am glad I am not there, very cold.
I sure wish the snow in FSX looked like that real stuff. In FSX it just does not have the build up along the edges like the real stuff.

Great shots Ryan, most enjoyable.

That Tamron looks to do a pretty nice job for non-Canon glass. (Canon user myself after years of Nikon).

Ok that's it . I got to get me a decent camera . Outstanding pictures Ryan . The T & G's with the 130's and the beautiful cloud formations are absolutely beautiful . You wouldn't have professional training or work in photography would you ? Is there a big learning curve to one of these Cannon's ? This is coming from basically a " Point and Shoot " man . LOL

Thanks again for sharing , they are great pics .

Great pics! I had to go put on a sweater after watching them. You're making me want to bust out my CS C-130 for some pattern work. :ernae:

Airliners.net - I dont think they like me, my shots aren't perfectly crisp for them lol - I do have a few shots there you can search by butterworth

The 15-85 is working out very well. It's still not the greatest in low light hand held (but what is?) But the last cloud shot was using that lens with my CPL from Hoya. The img quality is much much improved over my older kit lens, so to me it was worth it. Just need an airshow to get more up close n personal airplane shots.

The tamron does do well for being a basic telephoto. I think it has better IQ than the first Canon telephoto upgrade you can buy, and they are about the same price. But it sure would be nice to have the 70-200 or 100-400mm from canon, but another 1500+ bucks will have to wait :icon_lol:

Thanks, C130's are fun to take pics of. I'd like to try and get their props spinning, but that normally requires lower shutter speed and at my focal length (and lack of sunshine for the first half of the day) I was already have some blurry photo issues. I don't have any professional experience, just love aviation, love my job, and am fortunate to be able to explore photography! As far as learning curves go - moving from a point and shoot to a DSLR will assure you much better manual control. So if you want to change your exposure, or get some motion blur, or take 1080p movies (the newer nikon and canons), and a lot more a DSLR is probably for you. The manual that came with my camera was pretty comprehensive. Plus the online community is large. check out www.dpreview.com for reviews and forums. Check out www.bhphoto.com for decent prices on DSLR's.

I have the CS C130 and from what I've seen the c130's do up here I feel the FDE is way off for the CS version. Maybe it's my setup but I can't keep my pattern in as tight as the real ones if it would save my life...

Again, I appreciate all your comments, and every few months I try to take some nice plane pics. Maybe it will be warmer for my next batch :icon_lol:

You're welcome.

For fun I cropped a shot of that C130 nose and did some unsharp mask (maybe not the best job, it was quick n dirty). Editing has never been my strong point. If someone knows how to sharpen this better let me know. I use GIMP for my editing.

Just for fun, you can even see the approach plate book (I assume that's what that is) in the right window

Ryan, nice photos, get a copy of Paint shop pro, theres plenty of free evaluation copies on the net, I use PSP 7 for all my sim work or photo editing, there are better photo editing suites around but PSP 7 is free and a good basis to begin with, theres an option in there to sharpen images, works very well. It has two sharpen modes, sharpen and sharpen more, three sharpens equal one sharpen more.

Another application I use is Infraview, also free, this also has a sharpen mode and equals two PSP7 sharpens, where Infraview really shines is in the jpg compression for internet images, it has a much better compression algorithm and images are much crisper after resize and compression, its also free I believe.

One good tactic with aircraft is to shoot at maximum image size and a slightly lower zoom level then cut the part you want after wards, the lower zoom level will increase your aperture and probably help reduce camera blurries. Try also to keep your ASA setting as low as reasonably practicable, the difference between 100 and 200 ASA is quite dramatic, especially at long zoom levels or lower aperture settings.

Must confess I'm looking at the 28-135 IS USM lens and a Canon 40D, would love the 24-105L IS USM but funds are not forth coming, will have to send the kids out chimney sweeping or something :).

Good shots, keep them coming.

Attached a local snow shot from last week, no aircraft, but taken with a simple Canon A620 point and shoot, though it does have full manual control and is quite in depth with almost as many options as a DSLR, just the optics that let it down, the image has been midly processed in PSP to sharpen one stop, contrast +5% and thats it. full aize image can be seen here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mickoo/IMG_5868.jpg

Where point and shoots really loose out is very fine detail, like the over head power lines to the left, any more sharpening and these will break up and look like very bad aircraft antenna in FSx with no AA.

The morale here is that you dont always need the most expensive gear to get half decent photos in moderate to good optical enviroments.

Kindest

Michael

hah he took off the crossing runway. Actually both were in use that day, winds were splitting the difference. that's what made it busy, or more complex I should say. Approaches to opposite runways are always fun lol
