Isn't that a Boeing 747SP?

Even for a 747SP, it still looks a little too short. You can tell by the flaps, but you can't see 'em:isadizzy:

The 747 SP is the single ugliest aircraft EVER conceived. Period.

Hi guys,

I flew on the Baby Flying Springbok - http://www.airliners.net/photo/South-African-Airways/Boeing-747SP-44/1508000/L/ - a couple of times Frankfurt-Capetown-Frankfurt way back when. I always thought it was a pretty cool ride.

Cheers, Holger

The airbus 380 is a BEAUTIFUL plane ( to a cross eyed fish )

The B747SP, A318 and B737-500/600 all look a bit cartoonish to me, with normal sized wings and little stubby fuselages, but I wouldn't describe any of them as ugly.

The A380 on the other hand...? Impressive, but it has a bigger forehead than me and that really isn't an attractive feature! :d

It is still better than the SP. I've seen so many thousands of aircraft at EAA and other airshows, and who knows how many pictures of planes online, and I have yet to see ANYTHING that is as ugly as the SP. :toilet:

I'll agree that the A380 is an ugly beast, but the 747SP isn't that bad. Certainly not the ugliest ever.

I quite like the Beluga in a strange kind of way too. Not pretty, but in the same way as an A-10, its looks make it a more interesting aircraft!

There are some hideous contraptions from the inter-war period though. I'd take a world of everything mentioned in this thread than a lot of the stomach churning stuff they came up with back then!

Forget ugly or beautiful designs, here's a cute one. Not sure on range nor capacity estimates though.

That pic cannot be fake - loook at the reflection of the Tow Tug under the nose - that reflection would never have been painted by a painter on a FS aircraft, where the textures are painted to be used in flight...

and that FSX can reflect the tow tug THAT GOOD i do not believe.

Ah!
The MC.200 italian fighter is uglier i think.

Fill with water for use in aerial firefighting.
Fill with kibble for non-lethal yet very demoralizing "bomb" runs over enemy camps!

I used to see Prat & Whitney's 747SP testbed all the time back when I worked at BTV. The bird is based across the lake at PBG (The old Platsburgh AFB) you think one stock looks wierd, try seeing it with three normal engines and one honking huge engine off a 777 hanging off the wing...

The 747 SP is the single ugliest aircraft EVER conceived. Period.

Who cares about the looks if you can have this:

Maximum speed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_speeds#Vno): 0.92 Mach (591 knots, 1,095 km/h)
Cruise speed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_speeds#Vc): .88 Mach (535 knots, 990 km/h)
Range (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Range_%28aircraft%29): 6,650 nm (7,650 mi, 12,325 km) with 276 passengers

You want ugly?

Ah!.. That triple engined monster earlier (F-AHAF) is a Farman 4X I believe, or possibly known as the F.120.

This is not only ugly, but for some reason I also find it extremely scary - a bit like some infernal machine - I can't believe people actually paid money to fly on this expecting to reach their destination!

As for the B747SP, beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose, but I quite like them as they made excellent subjects for photography during the 80's-90's at London Heathrow. Lots of airlines used them into that airport with some pretty good liveries, but the best thing was that due to the proportions of the aircraft they framed just nicely for the typical 4:3 shot. They were like having a normal 747 squeezed-up at the ends to fit nicely in the photo! He! He!

January 12th, 2010, 12:18
The SP has a bigger tailfin than the standard 747, to counter the shorter lever arm of the fuselage.
That makes it look even more like a comic character.
But ugly?
Search for the Air Truk - I can't be bothered :d.

Airtruck....This is the NZ version which only one or two were built...the Aussie version (which had a longer production run) didn't have the radial engine amongst other changes.
