This sim rocks, can't believe I didn't get it when it was released, oh well. Now I need to get FB and AEP to add to IL2 to complete it. I wish they wouldn't do BOB and spend more time on PF. I'd love to do some designing for this sim, too bad it's not open source.

yep, the 262 that comes with AEP is a sim in itself :) nice shots!

That's not completely true. You can make add-ons for this sim, but they have to get approved by Oleg. Lot's of things in it are actually third-party creations, a good deal of the cockpits in Pacific Fighters for example.
You have to sent a mail to Oleg and explain what you want to do. For more info, write a message in Oleg's Ready Room at the official UBI website.

If you're speaking about 3D design, don't start a project for PF : Sasqon, the chief modeler at 1C, says repeatedly that starting a project now will get Zero chances to be included (time constraints due to high standards to be achieved and the resources are dedicated now to creating BoB).
It leaves you with movies, skins and missions.
NB : don't confuse "open source" with "open architecture" ;)

Thanks for the info guys. bzhyoyo, you are correct, wrong term, my bad. I gathered from the forum at Ubi that some of the designs are "outsourced" which is a little different than what I was pointing at. I do/did scenery design as well as aircraft mods using gmax and 3DSMax and would love to add on to this sim as well as see more content from the other users. Ships and objects would be easy as well as modifications to the landscape (a good mesh would be nice) I love the water effects and the animations and more ships, even drivable ones would be easy to do design wise. I also loved doing heli ops in CFS2 on moving ships and would love to do some Vietnam era mods as well.
Nausicaa, thanks for the info, I do thrid party payware design for another game/sim and my schedule is tight, which at the moment keeps me from posting about this, but I will look further into it, thanks. BTW the pics you posted about the BOB design are nice, lots more detail that what is in PF now, thats for sure, look more like FS9 designs! LOL
I'd be happy if they were not developing BOB and put that effort back into PF.

MCD,
I can understand your frustration, as you are probably a PTO buff and you would like to see 1C Maddox ressources and creativity go into that theatre. Still, you are wrong of being dissapointed IMHO, because PF and the rest of the series (as you will see when you get IL2Fb and AEP) are based on a prehistoric engine, which is the original IL2 one. This engine was absolutely not conceived for the complexity of the things the series offers today. Maddox never had carriers in mind, or all the planes you see today, or even the FM's we have now--and BTW, such a complexity was not in range of the computers of that time. The sim-concept of the IL2 series is brilliant, but the engine is WAY overstretched beyond the limits of what it was ever conceveived to be able to do. It is time to move on and to create something new. BoB will come with a complete new engine that will permit totally new things, things that no combat flight sim today is able to do. This engine will be created for combat flight simming and for the computers of tomorrow, it is tailored "on mesure" and not something from a complete other game "relooked" to simulate flying (like the MS series does) We will see things in the BoB engine we don't dare to imagine today. When Oleg talks about civilian traffic in London, like busses and pedestrians, he means what he says. Just look at the incredible complex modelling of that tank in the images I posted; (i mean thats just a groundvehicle right?) and in the wings of the planes. No combat flight sim has ever gone so far.
The biggest obstacle for new and revolutionary games is not the lack of creativity of developers, and it's not the lack of money, or that it is a "niche" product. The biggest obstacle is backward compability. Oleg has decided to break with that and to develop something completely new that is ment to set combat flights simming standards for the years until way after 2010. He also said that he will relook at the other theatres with this new engine. Planned are the MAW, the ETO (not russia) and maybe also the PTO.
I think hes' dam right to set new standards. Who else does? Do we really want to play the same old dusty sims in a few years on 64 bit processors and 5 mega RAM, all sliders maxed out then and with some prehistoric sleepy AI? Not me, really.
I can't wait to see what BoB will bring to us...but I know that I better keep my machine ready for the day it comes out, lol.

PS: Bzhyoyo is right as far as it is concerning planes. But there will probably still be objects and maps done in the future. The stopped "support" for third party concerns really mainly planes and cockpits. Patches will continue to come out for the IL2 series, and they will continue to have new things and even new planes, but less then before.

Hi Naus, you are correct, I am a fan of the PTO more than the eastern front, but I share your enthusiasm and excitement for a new engine, don't think I don't. I am just thinking of gameplay now and not 2 years from now. With the advancments in technology coming faster and greater, by the time the new BOB engine is out and they get a chance to do another PTO sim, it will be time for a new engine, LOL.
I agree with the backward compatibility comment. I designed for the last 2 versions of MSFS and that is what kills the performance in that series. Even though with my yoke and pedals and about $400-$600 worth of payware for FS9 I am set, I'd gladly give it up for a new engine with lots of overhead to design for, we'll see what the next FS will bring.
I'll say this, I find PF much more appealling visually than I ever found IL2, so obviously there is room for tweaking.
take care, Michael
