One thing that is important to do is keep the rest of the team apprasied of your progress as you fly your leg. Provide regular updates, with "ETE", or time until you land. This is very helpful to the next pilot, preparing to grab the baton for the next leg. Since it is not required to fly online in multi-player, the next pilot has only this thread for updates on your progress.

Have reached cruising altitude of 25,000. ETE 1:06.

PRB
December 11th, 2009, 13:20
Have a pretty good tail wind at 25,000. No northern lights yet. ETE 0:50.

PRB
December 11th, 2009, 13:41
ETE 0:30.

Flying online tip: Re-assign all single-key commands to some combination that you are unlikely to press while typing in the multi-player chat box, because often you think the chatbox has the keyboard focus, but it doesn't, the sim does, and you end up dropping the gear, activating time compression, and slew mode. Very frustrating, and worse, duenna will invalidate the leg.

PRB
December 11th, 2009, 13:51
ETE 0:20. 60 knot tail wind, whoohoo! 420 KTS GS!

Dangerousdave26
December 11th, 2009, 13:57
Weather report

Winds on the ground 0 kts at 193 degrees.

Which prompts me to ask why if FS has 0 kts of wind does it show a direction. :icon_lol:

Visibility 60nm

Terrain very flatish in the default mesh.

Runway has lights

Runway 8 is your best approach

Should be a cake walk.

Good show Moses!

PRB
December 11th, 2009, 15:53
Well done, everyone! Like JC said, don't by shy! Looks like the next leg is a semi-no-brainer (UHMM), given the scarcity of airports out here in East Whodathunkit, Siberia! 620 NM.

jkcook28
December 11th, 2009, 16:18
It's a balmy -21F with a whopping 6.2mi vis at UHMM. What more could you ask for a Dec day in Siberia?

jkcook28
December 11th, 2009, 16:24
And don't forget wingmen are available too. If you don't feel comfortable yet as baton carrier, jump in as a wingman to get the feel of it. We have been known to crash; perhaps too often. http://freesmileyface.net/smiley/Surprise/surprised-016.gif (http://freesmileyface.net/Free-Surprise-Smileys.html)

I'll try it in a new aircraft (eeeks) UEEE to UHMM.

Grumman F9-F5 Panther USNavy Jet

I am online .... OOOOOPPPPS! LOL

Good thing I was online as PRB informed me that this aircraft is NOT legal. :-)

Baton back at UEEE LOL

PRB

Sorry about that, Milton. I was about to suggest you proceed, on account that some jet practice is not a bad thing, but I delayed too long!

PRB
December 12th, 2009, 13:12
At cruising altitude of 21,000. ETE 0:42.

One note about the leg from ATU to PADK. At 376 NM, it is an illegal leg. Had we taken the short hop from ATU to PASY first, the leg to PADK would have come in under 350 NM. Alternatively, the leg from UHPP could have flown direct to PASY, since the rule is if there are no airports within 350 NM, the requirement defaults back to the 700 NM leg.

Just one of those things we have to worry about in the real race. For this practice, I just want to make sure we make a note of it, and we will proceed onwards.

Smilo, it's up to you of course, but PACZ butts up against a cliff, making runway 2 the only way in. The weather is better there than any other airport around, but that can change quickly.

If it comes to it, PAHP is close by, has lights, and not much hills around, and would make a good divert.

No. We have to go all the way around! :icon_lol:

A good place for the next leg might be PARC. It has lights, and it takes us a little bit south, where there will be more than 20 minutes of daylight each day. There are lots of airports up here within 350 NM, just no giant ones...

Milton Shupe
December 13th, 2009, 08:21
The race will be completed when we reach the starting point at UIBB in Russia. Keep it moving and ... have fun. :running:

Smilo, don't be discouraged by this. We (well, I) deliberately chose this route because it would guarantee bad weather and darkness. I'm feeling bad about that now, since these conditions are not easy, even for the veterans. However, don't give up. CYOC was a particularly difficult approach due to the terrain around the airport. Darkness and bad weather don't help. The first three legs I ever flew ended up as crashes, so don't feel bad!

I must have shut off Duenna prior to take off.

All was well with the practice flight.

Alternate method of verification is being used.

Because I tried to jump into the flight so fast I shut off Duenna to look at the destination airport. I did not want it on while I was scouting. Then I forgot to turn it back on and never noticed it talking to JohnC and Spookster67.

See screen shots.

I have learned my mistake and I promises it will not happen again.

I will be prepared to take my beating in the Hide out.

really?
I can vouch for that.

You asked, we answered. I've been scouting these airports downstream; few are good, most are bad, lay the awful weather and darkness on top and these are really tough.
IFR and ability to shoot precision approaches (if available) are almost mandatory. Scud running in this area will be continuous.

This, in the end, is probably way harder than Paul intended for a first practice session for it can shoot confidence dead; especially for new recruits. However, the real race will not produce this constant difficulty so expect the next practices to have some "normal" flying conditions.

Practice, practice, practice. One can only learn to fly in this by doing it.
Godspeed.

Next question-how the heck do I upload the Duenna? There seems no "upload file" option,& I know for real that you have to do it ASAP

If it is working properly, the Duenna will have saved 3 files on your hard drive. Two of them are small text files, and the third is a jpg image. They should be located in a folder here:

C:\Program Files\FS-Addons\RTW-Duenna\OUTPUT\2009-12-15\
(your folder path may differ, but you get the idea)

Use the forum file upload function "manage attachments" to attach the jpg file, and the FlightLog text file. The system log file isn't required.

Good job on that landing at BGSF! :applause:

Dangerousdave26

Yeah if you use the Quick Reply box to post it does not have the upload function. Normally you would use the "Post Reply" button.

Using the Quick Reply box is still a good way to do it because your first post should simply be

"The Baton is Free at [ICAO]"

Nothing else and posted as fast as you can.

You should post your Duennas and text log within an hour. We like to see that done within the next few minutes but the Rules allow an Hour.

Good job everyone this has been a Great Poor weather Exercise...

You guys are doing great. jkcook28 is right – I picked this route with the idea that it would provide bad weather, which is good practice. It’s kind of hard to say now that the weather turned out worse than I expected, even though it did. My only fear is that some new pilots or even potential new pilots will have been or already have been discouraged. This is much tougher flying than we will see in the race. So as long as it doesn’t kill us, it will make us stronger!
