Pearl Harbor is a harbor on the island of Oʻahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. Much of the harbor and surrounding lands is a United States Navy deep-water naval base. It is also the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan on December 7, 1941, brought the United States into World War II.

I can remember Pearl Harbor and it doesn't seem so long ago. It was a warm December afternoon in Massachusetts and I was Simonizing the old man's Chevy when he came out to tell me the news. I said, "Where's Pearl Harbor?"
He told me and then said it looks like eventually you'll be in the war. It was a senseless, cowardly and sneaky act and so many servicemen were needlessly slaughtered.
Then came the following news about the fall of Bataan and then Corregidor. Then the Phillipines Death March. The American spirit was as low as I had ever seen it. It has never, ever, been a low as it was at that time.
I sincerely hope that we learned our lessons from this and never get ourselves in such a vulnerable position again.

I was at the Arizona Memorial this time last year. It was a very moving experience then, and it is now.

I believe that the historian Randy Papadopoulos said it best, that Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is a time that, fundamentally we recall, not as a time to hate anyone, but as a reminder that we have to work very hard to protect the things we hold dear, and occasionally have to fight for them. That's the message I take from this day.

I'm thinking things are going be crowded this year. The Missouri is off of Battleship Row for it's maintenance and preservation. I hope any one that is going has there spot saved.

With all due respect for Dr. Randy Papadopoulos, he like most of the WWII historians, were riding around in their old mans jock straps at the time of Pearl Harbor.
So pardon me while I look at their version of history with a healthy batch of scepitism They were not around at that time so that they have absolutely no say on what we feel or don't feel.

It was a senseless, cowardly and sneaky act and so many servicemen were needlessly slaughtered.

Actually it was a clever and necessary move by the Japanese. Take the element of surprise and do as much damage as you can. Kind of like a pacific edition of the intial move of Operation Barbarossa.

But look at the other side: You made 'em pay tenfold in the long run.

To have Japanese Diplomats talking to Cordell Hull about a peace accord while the Japs were bombing our people, in my mind was a cowardly, sneaky and as FDR put it, " a dastardly act that will live in infamy."
I guess that says it all.

One of the Navy memories that will always stick with me would be rendering honors to the Arizona when pulling into Pearl Harbor. It was a pretty moving thing for me. :medals:
