There are documented reports reports of the German flak batteries also firing AA illumination rounds up among the bombers at night to try and illuminate them along with the assistance of searchlights.

The flak shells explode launching a parachute flare which hangs and illuminates any bombers that fly near it. The flare then burns out long before it reaches close enough to the ground to illuminate the German positions.

Using the outstanding DR_flare done by Master Fox, we have redesigned it in to a AA gun, shell and effect. The new gun and shell have a muzzle blast with smoke and fire a large orange tracer flare ball that explodes at altitude. The shell explodes with a flash bang gunpowder effect with gray smoke and launches the parachute flare.

The flight crew reports indicated the flares were very distracting and disturbing during their night missions.

For the Wilde Sau tactics III/KG3 was tasked to fly above the bomber stream and illuminate it with flares in order to facilitate interception and acquisition by the Wilde Sau pilots.
This effect will be perfect for a Wilde Sau missions

It looks like I'm going to have to rethink my "no night missions" stance for flying. This looks really good.

You mean like this? Look closely and you can see the flare cannister inside the bright flare and halo. this one is almost finished and can be mounted on any German Bomber. It drops lke any other bomb singly or in pairs like the current aerial flare we now have.
