View Full Version : Joystick problem

Bjartmar

I was playing CFS 1 in Vista perfectly well when I tried to up load some new aircraft and my Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 "died". The program knows that it is there; when I go into the settings every few seconds a pop up tells me that my joystick setings have changed from some strange ASCII code to another. OK; I thought there was a software conflict and deleted the whole CFS game and reinstalled with the same problem. I've now reinstalled 4 of 5 times. The joystick works perfectly in CFS 2 and FSX.

You would tend to believe that a Micro$oft game would play on a Micro$oft OS... naaa

You would think that, in this case, they would release a fix promptly... naaa

If not, they would at least answer to the numerous complaints... naaa

In the whole Micro$oft KB, only two self-proclaimed M$ representatives attempted to offer, if not a solution, at least an explanation; it is the stick driver's fault! Go and install a "Vista compatible" version.

The fact that the drivers work with most other games should have raised an eyebrow or two at M$. Apparently not.

All this time, I was thinking that it was for Vista to adapt itself.

What a fool I was...:kilroy:

P.S.- Bjartmar, who made your stick again?...:173go1:

Microsoft OS, no matter what version including new 7 will have issues. They release them with bugs and let us find and fix. Pretty cool they make em we fix em, quite a racket eh?:kilroy:

Bjartmar,
I too have vista, had the same error msgs. I have a av8r stick. Im totally inept with anything tech, but I blundered into a fix. I can now use my stick and rudder pedals. I think what helped was any or all of this: unplugged stick cable, replugged.,assigned the stick in assignments after deleting all similar entries for keyboard. I think that helps not to have 2 controlers for the same assignment. Was a bit tough to get the hat working, alot of cancelling and starting over.I can fly now, but I wish I knew what all the choices were, what they meant in assignments. Id really like to find a key to give a player to target outside view padlock.
So from a real tech Noob, if any of this helps you in some way, it will be worth it.
also, when it asks do i want to change the stick from---- to ----. I click NO. when I press the f1 for offline help, i get mssage telling me vista doesnt support it, but i just X out of the box and I am able to continue. Sorry for the jumbled thoughts, old lady is calling me to my chores, i'm trying to rush this post out.

As it said in the post referenced above I got it to work by manually entering all of the assignments,I haven't touched it since,to be honest and that was 2 laptops ago.:USA-flag:

I have ordered a new Logitech stick; hopefully that will do do the trick. My Microsoft sticks works with FSX, CFS 2, and Red Baron all using Vista. I've trued unplugging and replugging, etc. Right now I'm just waiting for the new stick in the post.

You were right; got the Logitech and I still have the problem. What I don't understand is that it worked before; and still works on CF2 and other games.

1. Find an "old" computer that still has windows XP
2. Install CFS on it
3. Plug in your joystick and edit all settings conserning it. (also test if it works in-game)
4. Copy the combatFS.CFG file and, with it, replace the old one on your comp.

Worked for me.
Also when a window pops up, allways click NO.

Hi Von Laibach!
Your idea sounded good. I installed CFS on an old laptop, the joystick workwed fine. I copied the CFG file into my main computer, no joy, same old problem. I just about to give up.

I run VISTA OS and have gotten my Saitek Cyborg Evo joystick to operate in CFS1.

My machine is a HP a1720n with an Intel Core 2 CPU 6300 at 1.86 GHz and 2 Gbytes of RAM. The VISTA OS is the 32-bit version running service pack 2. My graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT.

Based on some other posts, I modifed the COMBATFS.CFG file to recognize my joystick and it works okay now.

The modified file is below with the modifications in red. The procedure is the backup the original COMBATFS.CFG file and using notepad replace the portions of the original file with the sections in red.

If modifying the configuration later using the graphical interface, you may get gibberish about changes to the joystick configuraton and a box confirming the change. You need to say no to all changes and you may need to go back into the file and change the line to something like.

LastJoystickName=Saitek Cyborg USB Stick

That seems to work for me.

For VISTA users

I would also turned off the "User Account Control" in VISTA which is the cause of a lot of problems for flight sim gamers that routinely modify files on the C drive. To do that, do that go to Control Panel. Select Security Center under the classic view. Select "Other Security Settings" and turn off "User Account Control". That feature is their for high risk machines that could be infected by malware modifying programs on the C drive. My recommendation is to instead get a good firewall program.

modified COMBATFS.CFG file to work in VISTA

Does anyone know if they are having this joystick problem with CFS 3? I have the same problem with CFS 1 ---my Logitech freedom 2.4 joystick will not work, but works in CFS 2 just fine.

...Then we owe Radioman a cold one at the Officer's Club...well done Sir! This has been an ongoing issue with Vista. Johhny had a solution posted way back when...but Vista went "kicking and screaming". I hate that anybody could be locked out of the game due to the "advancements". Now take your joysticks in hand and get involved in Multiplayer!!! If it works when you're alone ..great! If it works when you're flying wingtip to wingtip...even better! That part, I can help you with! :salute:

For those interested, it appears that the «new and improved» Windows 7 has the same issues with recognizing joystick with CFS1.:kilroy:

BTW- Have you seen this TV commercial where a girl say, in substance; «I had an idea; how about making an OS that I would not have to worry about crashing and freezes? Windows 7 is my idea...bla...bla...». Couldn't believe my ears!:mixedsmi:

It's a bit like Ford saying; «Buy our new Mustang. This one won't be a gas guzzler and a lemon rusting from everywhere, promise!»

I'm no PR specialist, but this ad campaign sucks!:monkies:
