Folks,

Am looking for a retail version of Windows ME. Am willing to pay a fair price and shipping. All's I have is Emergency Recovery CDs.

In addition, am looking for an old WinME machine you might still have laying about that still works. Again, a fair price.

Why? My old WinMe machine is truly on its' last legs. It is a machine I put my heart and soul in, to make it a 'state of the art' gaming machine. At first the PS2 keyboard port went. Ok, bought a USB one. Now the PS2 mouse port went. Ok, put a USB mouse in. When loading some old software on it, it hung up. Guess what. Can't get into safe mode with USB keyboard; and now, even with the USB mouse, I can't click on "Your machine was shut off improperly; click on "Restore my active desktop", so that I can at least do a System Restore and get rid of that corrupted or whatever thing I installed.

I've done a lot of things inside the case, all except putting in a new motherboard. For some reason, it worries me. Don't know if WinMe software will work on it,.....my video card, sound card, memory, CD drives et al. A lot of money [for those days] was spent on them.

To further explain my need: I just completed learning how to set up a home network w/router that includes my WinXP machine as master. A lot of my old flight sims [CFS1, Red Baron etc.] have advanced features/utilities incorporated in them that just won't work on the WinXP machine. Ergo, the need for a WinMe machine.

Anyway, if you have a dusty box of WinMe laying around, or an old WinMe machine being used as a doorstop, would appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Ed

Ed, just a suggestion, but a year ago I was one of the won't let go of 98SE until they pry it from my cold dead fingers types.

I've since went to XP and haven't looked back.

My thanks, Ickie

I'm somewhat ebay-challenged, but my son is an expert in it.

Will put him on the HP machine when he stops by for lunch tomorrow.

I notice there's 1 day some hours left.

He knows how to watch the clock, and one time when looking for a Sidewinder FFB Pro stick for me, waited until the last 30 seconds or so to place a 5 cent or whatever final bid. He won out over some other guy who was watching the clock and bidding. After he won, he got nasty messages from that guy. He just laughed and ignored him.

Again, thanks

Ed

Hope you find a ME machine and the full ME OS Ed. A suggestion to help with your old games if I may. Check in the shortcut Properties and set Compatability to Windows 98/ME. Seeing lots of the older games have trouble playing on XP you can try this to help them run. I've not tried it myself but I've heard it works.

It's sad that all the money we spend on our games/sims, they only have a lifespan of that particular OS they were made to run on, even tho some do run fine on the newest one out. Wait till Vistas comes out. We'll be left in a real lurch I imagine. And it sucks that you only get recovery cds when you buy a store-bought computer. You should get an original cd of the OS on it in everyone one bought.

Good luck.

GT182,...All you say is true. Yup, tried the 'Compatability' thing first time, second time, etc. something happened. No joy.

Willy also,..."from my cold dead hands". These new systems are like someone coming into your house and replacing your favorite well-worn-in and comfortable reclining chair for one that has a vibrator in it, cup holders, entertainment center remotes holders [if I had an entertainment center], ad nauseum. Family did that to me some years back as a surprise, and it was, but I got my old-friend chair back. That new jazzy thing went back to the store. You don't mess around with something that works. My XP machine serves only as a connection to forums and emails; and is a reminder to get torqued-off when something else favorite doesn't work. As for the speed of it, the graphics,...am too old to notice and I fly from the cockpit. So the 'eye candy' while impressive, ain't my basic cup o' tea.

Ickie,..I see where there are two other nuts out there bidding also on the WinMe machine. Boy, I'd like to know their story on why they want an Me machine. Maybe they in the same position and thoughts as I am. My e-bay son looked it over and said he would shift his lunch hour tomorrow to watch the clock and get it for me. A great son!

My thanks to all you guys. Now I know I'm not alone in my thinking :d

a big roger on that, Ickie! i had machine powered up, connected to ebay, just waiting for son to come by for lunch. i even checked some local websites to make sure my time-seconds were correct and synchronized.

went out for a smoke to try and relax before the bidding war started; came back in, and wham! no house electricity! oh, woe is me. son came home and said Dad, our work machine is still up and i'll take care of it for you. i was sweatin' bullets until i got his call.

i still can't believe that there were 5 other nuts out there like me, who wanted an old WinMe machine. mebbe we ought to start a 'mutual support group'.:costumes:

Thanks again Ickie, for pointing me in the right direction.

now i don't have to keep running upstairs and downstairs trying to test out FS2002Pro multiplayer. read my travails and differing opinions about it at thread:

Thanks Rick! That's a great site for "oldies but goodies". Was only kidding about Windows 3.11, but if you find the IBM 1401 'autocoder', Fortran, Cobol, RPG programs, give me a shout. :icon_lol:
