Installation Problem? [Archive]

I have run into a problem installing the FSX version of the FSD O-2A. The installer would not recognize the installation path for FSX. . .however I was able to browse when needed and got the airplane installed. I subsequently ran into other problems with installation of new liveries and using the "Load Manager" as it said basically that the installation was invalid.

I wrote to FSD and they said in those instances it was probably a problem with the registry path for FSX and to check this section for the correct path:

I checked there and while I have a section for Microsoft, below that there is nothing for the FSX installation. I checked further and found the needed entry in this section:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\10.0

My question is this: Did they get it wrong? Is the path correct where it is in my registry or should it be in both places or should it only show in the section they suggested to begin with? I can say that this is the only time I've had this problem and I've installed a lot of payware since I installed FSX to that path.

I don't know of the top of my head what registry entries are needed but you can download fsx_reg_utility.zip from avsim to fix it automatically.
I just checked and it is there, its not one of the many files that are still awol.

Well, leave it to me to have something entirely different, lol. I ran that utility and it says it found the installation path in the HKey_Local_Machine. When I looked again (for the 4th or 5th time) I still saw no reference. So I did a search for "regedit" on the computer and it found 4 different registries. It found one under "Windows", one under "Windows\SysWOW64" and then two other areas which I couldn't access. I did open the one for WOW64 and indeed the installation path is there in the HKey_Local_Machine which is apparently where this utility found it. . .however under the regedit that resides in the Windows directory (which I have always assumed was THE registry) the path is not there. So, I have this utility which is supposed to search out and find the correct path for the FSX installation and it does do the job, but locates it in a registry that I've never seen before and the original problem remains, which is that the installation path is not in the standard Windows registry which is where the FSD installer is looking, lol.

In the tool just click on the "Set Path" tab and fill in the blanks then click the "Set FSX Path" button. That should do it.

Nope, when I double click the icon, it runs, says it located the path and disappears.

Ok, I had the "ini" file open in the folder, so it was only doing the "autocheck". However, I am totally confused now (nothing new). The regedit I have always gone to is the one under "Windows", but apparently, with Win7/64bit that's no longer the case. . .it references the regedit inside the SysWOW64 directory inside the Windows Directory. I say that because the utility to check the FSX installation path has consistently said the installation path is correct but I could never find it in the normal regedit. The only place the correct path resides is in that regedit inside the SysWOW64 directory.

Now, if the FSD installer doesn't look there, and how would it ever know. . . .I'm assuming it looks at the registry I mentioned before, the one under Windows. This is ridiculous, lol.

OK lets do a step by step.
First running regedit, this is in W7 but it's pretty much the same in Vista and XP.
BTW, if your unsure what your doing in regedit DON'T change anything as you could end up doing more harm than good, but it doesn't hurt to just look.

Click the "START" button and choose "RUN".

If you don't see RUN you will need to enable it.
To do that right click on your taskbar and choose "properties". In the dialogue box click the "Start Menu" tab then the "Customize" button.
In the next box that appears scroll down and tick the "Run command" box then click OK.

Now when you click "Start" then "Run" in the box that comes up type regedit then click OK

OK now the FSX registry fix tool.
BTW I noticed that the one I linked to is V1.2, there's a V1.3 on the tweakfs website.
You can go straight to there site by starting V1.2 a clicking the TweakFS Website button near the bottom.
You'll find the newer version under free downloads.

Start the tool, ignore the "Get Path" tab and click the "Set Path" tab.
Make sure to fill in all the boxes I've indicated in the screenshot, there are browse buttons for the FSX Root Folder and CD-ROM Path.
Then click the "Set FSX Path" button.
In the confirm dialogue click Yes.

Yep, been there, done that. I even got the latest version, but it does not write to what I used to refer to as the main registry. Every time I set the correct path, click all the setup buttons and launch it, it comes back that the path is already present in the registry, but it isn't.

I see you're also running Win7/64bit. Have you looked inside regedit under the main windows directory to see if the FSX path is there under Local_Machine? If I simply went by what this utility was telling me I would have to assume that it is there, but I needed to actually confirm for myself that it had written the path and it does not. . .only in the SysWOW64/regedit file.

Just checked and mines the same as yours, nothing in the one in the main Windows folder but they are in the SysWOW64 one.

I just booted into XP as well and the entries are in the regedit.exe in the Windows folder, there and also in regedt32.exe in the System32 folder.
I amuse that they both just startup the same program in XP regardless of which exe you use.

I haven't had any problems with installing addons under W7 so far but I don't have that plane so can't confirm the problem your having with it.
I don't have anything by FSD, do they have a forum you can post about it on ?
Sounds more like a problem with the way there installers interact with W7 to me.

Well, at least I can confirm that I'm not totally nuts, lol.
I have been in contact with FSD and they were the ones who suggested that it might take a reinstall of FSX if the correct installation path wasn't in the "Local_Machine" section. They sent a link for the latest installation of the O-2A and that went without any problems, finding the FSX installation path and installing the airplane as advertised. Then I went to add a new livery for that airplane and hit a brick wall. It couldn't find the path, asked me to browse to the correct path, which I did, then continued to tell me it couldn't find the path, lol. Grrrrrr, lol.
