What do you think is the best vintage british aircraft in FSX? It must be freeware. Milton's Puss Moth is great in FSX.

Dave Garwood's DH Dragon Rapide is quite nice too...

Dave Garwood's Auster J1 Autocrat is a must have IMHO.

I just had to reformat my HD and reinstall FSX and the Autocrat was one of the first add-on aircraft that went back into my hangar.

Of course but being an old fart I didn't think of it as vintage:mixedsmi:

I still think that if says FSX in the title of the thread it should really be a 'native FSX', not everybody gets a nice smooth VC with portovers.

I know things like Rick P's 748 and David Maltby's 1-11 and Comet work in FSX, but I still get much lower FR with them than with native FSX (SP2)models, so do not fly them any more, a great loss. If you have a really powerful PC, it becomes less of an issue.

I vote for the Autocrat too, easily as good as some of the payware Pipers about at the moment and a fraction of the price.

As the thread originator mentioned the Puss Moth (Fs9) then I think it's his call. Vintage aircraft tend to be small and lacking complex systems which tends to mean they perform well in FsX. The Gipsy and the Puss Moth both perform well in FsX.

Yes, it doesnt have to be a native FSX aircraft, however it needs to perform well in FSX. The autocrat and puss moth are a few of my favourite.

That depends on where you draw the 'vintage' line I guess. ;)

If you say 50+ years old then the Chippy qualifies but that just makes me feel old! :frown:

I have flown Chippies in RL and they would not have been considered 'vintage' at that time.

I have heard a rumour that Rick was working on a full blown FSX version of the Chippy but that was a while ago now so I have no idea how it's progressing or even if it's still a going concern. I still fly the FS9 v3 in FSX regardless.......gotta have my Chippy!

If "vintage" is defined as 'over 25 years old' then there's always these:

Ha... This thread has me kinda stumped. I don't know really what my favourite British vintage plane is, probably Dave Garwood's Rapide. i love this one, because it has a varient (HG691) which I've actually flown in.

Alas I've never flown one in RL...just sat in 'em. According to Rick, the FSX version is still on the cards and I'll await that with baited breath. In the mean time I'm very happy with V3.:ernae:

I was chatting Rick a few weeks ago, now he is employed as a pro 3D modeler, it is a bit like working at something that was a hobby, you do not have as much time (or inclination.....I think the term used to be 'busman's holiday') to do 'free' stuff. as when you were working at some unconnected job to 3D modelling.

He has several projects on the go at the moment (including a native SP2 Chippy, if I remember correctly), but due to work pressures and problems sourcing decent technical info, they have no timescales at all.

I love threads like this, they never fail to bring up models I've never heard of, like this one - what a beauty! Any suggestions for a sound pack? I don't think the default Lycoming sounds do it any favours.

Blighted they may have been but it's still a stunning piece of engineering. I would dearly love a good one for FSX.

The question which is best, really can't be answered by me. Among many other things it depends on my mood sometimes I like low and slow and something I like something faster.

The freeware FSX models all show the craftsmanship from the person who did them. All designers have their own style so it is hard to compare them.

I liked Dave Garwood's Dominie already in FS9 and I still love ot in FSX. I particulary like the fact the texture lay-out remaind the same. As there are millions of repaints done for the FS9 model, there are already a milion repaints for the FSX version as well.

As I normally prefer military aircrafts the Bristol Fighter by Robby88 is definitely among my favourites as well.

But as said I can't answer which is best. Sometimes I prefer meat and sometimes I prefer fish......

Cheers,
Huub

PS Spaceweevil, I use Lawdog's Hispano Y12 sound for the Bristol Fighter. Perhaps not absolutely perfect to match the sound of a Rolls-Royce Falcon, but quite nice.

Alphasim's Hunter for me.

If there's one plane I could have it would be a native FSX SEPECAT Jaguar to the same standard as Rick Piper's Hawk. Not a 100% British plane I know & probably not what some would class as vintage but I still want one.

As well as being payware (the originator of this thread specified freeware only) the AS Hunter is not exactly the most accurate Hunter on MSFS, even the wingtips are the wrong shape! Dave Garwood's is so much better and is free. The original (FS9 version) also has the full endorsement of an ex-RAF Hunter display pilot too!

A classic which is high on my wishlist is the Buccaneer "banana jet". I will never forget the takeoff they did leaving RAF Fairford after the 1993 IAT, basically they just retracted the gear without pulling up:

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i45/schuit/2009/RAF_Bucc_XV867.jpg

The only model I can think of that looks like the real thing is an old FS2004 one from Alphasim. There was a more recent attempt from UKMIL but unfortunately the exterior has some major flaws. Finally now an FSX model is in the works: Check out the WIP blog at http://www.flyingstations.com/

When I worked at Soesterberg they occasionally visited the air base. It was always a spectacular sight to see them leave. There was just enough runway to get clear from the trees.

As an Old Airman and a new flight simmer I have a hanger full of DH planes and I fly the Moths often. I also have the Curtiss Robertson J1. When I heard of the J1 I had to have it as I have sat in one when it was being prepped for sale. My next search is for the Stampe payware model when GAS finishes it!

Ants Tiger Moth http://www.antsairplanes.com/tigermoth.html has to qualify as a top choice as does the Stringbag that Flying Stations http://www.flyingstations.com/swordfish.html hosts...
there is also the updated Moth that Golden Age Simulations offers for free on their site and on OZX http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/file/3145-golden-age-simulations-de-havilland-dh60-moth/

My favourites were all mentioned early on: the Jim Douglass Moth, the Dave Garwood Auster, the Bulldog. There's a rather nice FSX native BA Swallow, too, by Paul Gausden, for really low and slow Old Warden flying.

I'm with Roger on what constitutes vintage. It's when you see a news item about the "last flight" of the replacement for something you remember as being new that you feel a bit vintage yourself.

Not seeing this thread before, must think my favourite British models are Rick Piper's Chipmunk, Dave Garwood's Rapide and Auster and although not a FSX aeroplane, Dave Molyneaux's Auster AOP.9 which represents the actual aeroplane in which I have over 60 hours in.
