German WWI L Class Zepplin

L44 CFS2 Zepplin by Gary Aumaugher
http://www.filefront.com/17709324/L44.zip

Gary Aumaugher has very kindly given us his L44 German Zepplin CFS2 model for uploading and sharing here at SOH. He says it is an alpha condition with some more adjustments he wanted to do, it but has very generously agree to launch it over to us, and it is landing now. I will attach the files as they are currently, he is going to send me the Pantshop Pro texture template files so we can make skins for it, it has a nice gray skin now, according to our first tester, "in overall gray which comes out a nice silver with a little specular shine" Also hopefully if tweaks are needed I am hopeful that the seasoned and experienced hands here can help with that. This was a very generous and kind gesture on Gary's part and gives us a important unit to add to our growing WWI revival for CFS2. I wil upload it here as soon as i get the texture templates.

The read me is included and updated to include Gary's request that we keep all the origina fles together. Those who understand and can pls check over the controls, and panel, I may have an alternate panel if we need one.

Zepplin over Kiel Regatta Year unknown.

WWI and Zepplin's
Naval and Army Use of Zepplin Rigid Airships
Often used in squadrons of up to 8 units at a time, for reconissance and bombing and harrasement misions, these were the most effective ariel units of the war until the development of fighters caught up with them. Most use was by the Imperial German High Seas fleet though early on the German Army tried to use Zeps (technically, I think the Army's airships were wooden-framed Schutte-Lanz types not Zeppelins) in their intended role of reconnaisance and paid the price, though IIRC AA fire may have been more effective than planes. The Navy used Zeps extensively early war in maritime reconnaisance over the North Sea mainly, until seaplanes and the likes of Camels launched from various seaborne means became a threat. Several airships were lost to these means; the 2F1 ship's Camel was often seen in the markings of a Zeppelin-killer, Cully IIRC.

The most famous clashes between Zeps and planes were during the (mostly night-time) airship raids on England. Leefe-Robinson, shot down in a new Bristol Fighter F2A by Jasta 11's Festner in April 1917, got his VC for shooting down SL11 in a Morane Parasol. Combat Aces, the CFS2 WW1 add-on, has some anti-Zep night missions in an Avro 504C, which are quite fun, in a dark, slow-motion kind of way, with decent effects and a suitable RFC plane or two.

There are several good books on the subject but I particularly recommend "The Friendless Sky" by the great writer Alexander McKee. Has a very readable chapter on zeppelin operations, long out-of-print but may be available cheap on e-bay. No illustrations but a more readable and enjoyable account of WW1 in the air from about every viewpoint would be very hard to find.

OldWheat was kind enough to test the new Zepplin for us and discoverd that the texture in the texture folder is not what shows up on the the craft...

, it is actually finished in overall gray which comes out a nice silver with a little specular shine. I don't know what ...that 'fuselage 1' .bmp is mapped to. I suspect it is linked to nothing & is in the texture folder by mistake. Looks like an aircraft to me. It flies quite realistically & shoots down nicely but not too easily. Perhaps the .dp could be tweaked for more smoke & flame.

sounds promising.... Gary has said to me that he had wanted to do more work in it but perhaps that was tweaking as he tries to get things as totaly historically accurate as possible.

from Gary:

Chris,
No problem on the L 44. I will get you the PSP files to work from. I haven't touched the Aerocrate files in a long time. I am still design aircraft but now I have to go to the field to fly them. I have been become totally immersed in radio control again after a 15 year layoff. The first thing I started with was an SE5a. I quickly moved on the higher performance and now pattern ships but biplanes still tug at my heart.
Anyway, the L 44 was never finished. The flight model has some real problems and it has nowhere near the detail I intended but just ran out of time to devote to it. All I ask to to credit and keep the files together.

I had noticed that before I sent it to you but opted not to remove that file. The L44 folder I have is over 20MB in size and contains extra model files and a PSP file named ZepPanel that was in the panel folder. I extracted all that extra stuff before I sent the zip to you. If either you or Oldwheat want those extra files (of if Gary doesn't provide them) let me know and I'll forward them to you.

New skins will most likely be 'shades of gray' with different numbers. Anybody have any possible schemes? Also, where & how did the zeppelins stow their bombs?

Note Iron Cross on underside, format for Number and the gondola design. This was in one of the Zepplin sheds. Photo also gives some detail for them.

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/2972/zfleety.jpg

an actual Zepplin Fleet attacking England taken fromm another Zepplin. Evidently fleets of up to 12 Zepplins attacked at times, one fleet had 8 naval Zepplins and 4 Army Zepplins. There were two major manufacturers and three differnt types that evolved.
[/URL]

At the beginning of the war, the Zeppelin airships had a framework composed of triangular lattice girders, covered with fabric and containing separate gas cells. Multi-plane, later cruciform, tail fins were used for control and stability, and two engine/crew cars hung beneath the hull driving propellers attached to the sides of the frame by means of long drive shafts. Additionally there was a passenger compartment (later a bomb bay) located halfway between the two cars.

Not all the "Zeppelins" were in fact Zeppelins some (including Leef Robinson's victim) were Schutz Lange which differed from the Zeps in the hull design (continuous curves) and construction (mainly wood). Some Parsival rigid airships were also used in mainland Europe. The range of true Zeppelin types also varied as the war went on with new height climbers and 'super zeppelins'. As a result the bomb load and types of bomb varied considerably but in general released from bomb racks from within the hull.

thanks a million for the sheds, i am a noob at making things in here, hope to learn but am running to catch up at work.... sheds would give us good centerpieces for missions, and the allies did raid and destroy a number of them and the Zeps inside. There were over 125 Zepplins in service thru the war, there must be some sheds left standing i imagine just as there are still some of the huge hangars here in the US at Moffit Field and other places.

I am not sure if we will be able to fly the Zeps in and out of hangars but at least maybe we can make a static model of one to put in them.

Ravenna
November 3rd, 2009, 17:57
This is all very welcome. I just took the Zep for a flight and it looks great. The only addition I would make is to the ordnance. I have seen a photo of large bombs next to a Zeppelin hangar. Some of the bombs were well over twice the size of the men standing beside them. It seems to me most likely that this ordnance would have been stored vertically, probably in cells. I seem to recall having something like this for one of the large 4 engined WW1 bombers.
CrisGer, you would be able to place the Zep in a large hangar using the MB to place the "aircraft" as a static object.

Life on the Zepplins got a lot less comfortable and a lot more nervous after they began to be shot down on the raids over London, moral reportedly plummeted after one of the largest of the main fleet Zepplins was shot down over London and fell on fire from many thousands of ft. There were no survivors. I wonder why they did not have parachutesx.

"... Anyone else having problems with the Zep in MB? It tends to just spin out of control and crash for me..."

RC, this sounds like the AI control issues that CFS2 has with some larger (or more complex) aircraft.

Try going into the Aircraft.cfg file and lowering the numbers shown in RED below by Half (your original numbers may be different, but the idea's the same):
---------------------------------------------------------------
;Moments of Inertia
empty_weight_roll_MOI = 217421.29 //slug-ft^2
empty_weight_pitch_MOI = 187288.65 //slug-ft^2
empty_weight_yaw_MOI = 343138.88 //slug-ft^2
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Make a copy of your original CFG file First, RC - no sense dancing on razors this weekend - and let's see if things improve for you...

Hopefuly I can get a Naval skin done for this beast as well as I want to set up some WWI naval campaigns going and I am working to get CFS2 ships to fire at each other and do damage so we can at least do Jutland and Dogger Bank and the Zep raids on the UK. Sorry to have taken so long to get the original file back up.

Talking about fixes - I'd tested this beast as AI-driven one, on stock CFS2 terrain (one of German airbases, taken from original CFS, can't remember which one exactly). Good thing that our friend AI can handle this on takeoff, with some issues, but still, he can. Bad thing is that I still can't figure out how to fix that non-colliding parts.
And talking about Naval campaigns - as far as I know, in at least two of Alexander Belov's addons for FS2k4 you can find many nice WW1 ships (Zenta class cruisers, torpedo boats, even U-boats). As far as I understand, is that possible to convert them from scenery BGL's to MDL's with corresponding .DP's and .CFG's? Maybe I'll try to contact with him about this little idea. Will see.

That is a great pack Tboomer57, I was thinking of mentioning it myself.
I like the way he did the parasite aircraft recovery.
The mother is actually a ship, a carrier with a tiny invisible landing platform right under the recovery hook. The parasite fighter has "superflaps" that enable you to fly the plane at the same slow speed as the Airship. It is still a tricky landing. The player flyable version of the airship is scaled down a bit. The history of the American Airships (http://www.airships.net/us-navy-rigid-airships/uss-akron-macon) is fascinating

ys i knew of that pack, it is great, a bit later in period than the Zeps..but I do enjoy all the airship history and details. Sadly the US airship fleet suffered disasterous losses that doomed that arm of the service except for the non rigid blimps which were active all the way up to my own youth, i remember them well flying from Lindberg Field in San Diego, droning across the blue California sky.

A Sister Zepplin in the Surveillance Airship Squadron

A problem i am having is getting far enough away from the player aircraft to get a decent screenshot, the external camera is too close to the airship..is there a fix for this? We need a lot more distance for a ship of this size.

Use chase view. it zooms out further you can also chase other units in the mission and so get a view from the ships. Chase view is CTRL+F4 (CFS2Combat Keymap) or C (FS/CFS1 Keymap) TAB cycles through mission units.

Good, glad to hear that Captain. let us know if you find any bugs.. we have tweaked the CFGs...as is permitted by the original author, he gave us the file set to use as long as we keep all the contents..but we are allowed to tweak and improve. So enjoy and do let us know if you find any improvements. I may try to improve the external texture of the gas bag as it is a bit plain, ie a large flat gray area....but that will have to come when there is time.

Also operational units has unit or id numbers and that may be something to add too. Machine gun nests were added to the top frame as well..they must have been pretty cold in those positions.

I still wish they could have managed parachutes for those lads.

Well, I just got an answer from Alexander Belov, and he agree on conversion of his objects into both BGL-libraries and ship MDL's.

Friends, I ain;t had the time to look through this thread, what's the word on the L-44? I have it, someplace, but lost interest in it when I found you can fly right through it and the only way you can destroy it is to hit one of the gondolas. Has there been an update?

Thanks

Well you can check out the download in the first post of this thread...and see, we have made some changes with the permission of the creator...and will be happy to look into further fixes. There are no other Zepplins available for CFS2 other than a payware from an old old add on set, and this one has the most promise. If there are things that need fixing this is the place to post about it..if we need to improve the dp then that is something to go on the list. :salute: that is great news R66C and very nice of him to give his consent.

I am trying to remember what needs to be changed for conversions...texture format maybe and some other things i am sure... maybe Colin can help us with the ship conversions.. that will be great to add those lovely ships that Belov made to the CFS2 Fleet. And the Sheds are sorely needed for accurate Zepplin missions for they were the sortie start and end point for all the Zepplins in the war and a target for bombing missions by the allies.

Cris, thank you. I love this L-44 and my favorite thing I'd want to do flying WW1 would be blimp busting, glad you all are working on it, I'll take some time and look through the threads. The missus here is not well and I keep a pretty close eye on her.

I just took a look at the L63.
The model converts very nicely with no need to fix any animations.
Because it is painted black and has no shiney parts there are no issues with texture format.
Only the flight model needs work, I'd suggest using the L-44 flight model and combat model. They are ready to go and the two airships are more or less the same size.
Now for some details The L63 has no LOD models but is only 10516 polygons.
The L44 has three levels of detail the highest being 23120 polygons the lowest 4428 polys.
You can figure the balance and effect on frame rates.
I also took a look at the adriatic scenery pack.
You cant use it directly but the scenery is old style FS2k2 coding so those scenery bgls could be scasm hacked into ship models. Once again there is no levels of detail but they are quite lo res.

ClassicBritishFiles.com also has an airship base scenery for download. It is the John McKeon scenery for Fs9 of the Cardington Airship Station in Bedfordshire where R-100 and R-101 were moored mentioned earlier in this post. It has sheds, a mooring mast and a static R101. There are 2 files, the base and an update. I don't know if someone could convert these to CFS2 but they look really good.

Somewhere there is an observation balloon for WWI of the type that both sides uses...was it AeroCrates? not sure..i dont recall..but hopefully it will turn up too. That is good news about the L 63, yes some of the night raider zeps were painted black...and i see there is one of that ilk in the zep shed that Mr Belov did.... that will be a good addition. I would think the cfgs will work out if they are the same size... I am testing maneuvering them as a fleet, so far there were some funny activities by a few fleet members but overall i think it will work.... have to try the damage model out and see about that next.

Captain those sheds from the UK base are great, they would work if we cant convert the zep sheds that Mr B did, the German sheds were a bit different in design..we have a pic earlier in this thread...straight sides is the largest diff but they would certainly work. Those were certainly engineering marvels for that time and technology.

AIR RAID ON NAMUR PLEASES LONDON; Retaliatory Attack on Zeppelin Sheds Approved Amid Discussion of Home Air Defense. SOME THINK IT IMPROVED Others Think Every Aircraft That Visits England Should Be Brought Down.

LONDON, Aug. 26. -- The bulletin issued today by the Admiralty of the British aeroplane attack on the Zeppelin sheds, near Namur, was generally hailed with satisfaction as in line of the "defensive offensive" policy advocated by the majority of air experts, whose views have received most pub licity in the popular newspapers.

here is an interesting revolving zep shed:

In late 1914, the first long-range air attacks were undertaken by the Royal Naval Air Service against the Zeppelin sheds in Cologne and Düsseldorf. The German airships were a menace to British shipping and a threat to British cities. The inspiration behind the attacks was the First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill. British seaplanes were based in the Channel to protect the waterway and to shorten the distance to Germany. The attacks proved effective and continued into 1915. That year the Admiralty developed plans to attack German industry as well, but they were suspended in the spring of 1917. Churchill was always an enthusiast for bombing and aerial attacks on German industry were approved a few days after he became Prime Minister in May 1940.

I think this is the destruction of LZ37 over Belgium by an RAF pilot

Since the destruction of these sky monsters was spectacular due to the gas I imagine we could include some of the special effects that ghostpony and others developed to make it accurate.

maybe we can sneak in a few parachutes.

Okay, just tried to make a "fast" conversion (MDL only) by myself. Still, I'm a newbie in MCFS2 coding, so the visual model didn't showed up properly.
Source file was NorthSea-5.bgl from Zeppelin_Bases_2 (1 object, lightship, to be more exact).
So I changed the start of file, added some of SCASM related stuff:
Set( BUF 4096 )
Set( LABELS 9000 )
Set( PATCHES 9000 )
Set( LINBUF 8192 )
Set( MAXPTLST 3000 )
Set( FSVERS 0x0800 )
and deleted this:
LatRange( N53:25:56.73 N53:31:20.70 )
Then, compiled that with SCA296 and converted into MDL by means of umdl.
After decompilation of the file, I got message about 11 Unknown BGL opcodes.
Talking about the start of decompiled file, it looks like this:
Set( RAW 1 )
Set( BUF 4096 )
Set( LABELS 9000 )
Set( PATCHES 9000 )
Set( LINBUF 8192 )
Set( MAXPTLST 3000 )
Set( FSVERS 0x0610 )

Area( R )

Perspective
RefPoint( nsi :[ -124 ] 0x04 v1= 0 v2= 20 )
;uName: uOffset: 0x90
IfVarAnd( :L0010A6 0x90 0x08 )
VFileMarker( 100 )
;uName: uOffset: 0x68
IfVarAnd( :L0010A8 0x68 0x8002 )
Call( :L0010C0 )
RefPoint( nsi :[ -152 ] 0x04 v1= 0 v2= 20 )
SetScaleX( :[ -164 ] 0 0 7 )
PBHCall( :L001156 0x1C )

So, can anybody tell me about some errors in this?
Thanks in advance.

I found the full file set for the L 44 which includes an extra skin with camoflage (not sure of the accuracy but it is nice to have an additonal resource) and some additonal working files..i will get it uploaded and restore the link for it tomorrow/today...as i was up all night working on projects...but soon. Just glad i was able to find it, Cody was kind enough to share it with us as earlier posts will indicate and now we can restore that link.:salute:

Thanks in advance. R66C its difficult to trouble shoot with just snippets of code. But since you ask.
I will add comments to your snip that might help you understand it better

All the info you need can be gleaned from Caleb Flerks site (http://www.cfgse.calebflerk.com/)
and if that isn't enough the SCASM docs are here (http://www.scasm.de/doc/index.htm)
Book mark these pages!
Try deconstructing a stock ship model and study that.

If you have the sheds you can make the Tondern Raid. Get a Camel and add a hook to its .cfg and grab HMS Furious18 from cgshipyard....http://www.simviation.com/lair/cfs2shipyard.htm

Its been around for a couple of years now and is quite usable.
