View Full Version : Willy's Golden Age flight to Oz in the Twin Beech

Willy
October 25th, 2009, 15:29
Decided to park the Cessna for a little while and get the Beech D18 (by Milton of course) out of Mildenhall before the RAF starts charging me for parking.

For the first leg, I think I'll take it to LFML, bypassing Paris and Lyon. Going to set up and take off.....

Down and safe in Marseilles. Pretty good flight until I hit the fog in southern France. Had to drop down 3000ft just to be able to see the ground.

Welcome in Beech heaven, glad you decided to start alittle earlier.
Best of luck olli

Willy
October 26th, 2009, 08:27
Thanks olli... The Beech has been my default aircraft for quite some time now. I've already flown it around the world once, what's a trip to Oz? ;)

Willy
October 26th, 2009, 16:18
Going to set up for the flight to other side of Italy (LIBR) from Marseilles (LFML). Might have to get a little creative on my route on this one...

Willy
October 26th, 2009, 20:15
Well I didn't have to get too creative. The Duenna did it for me. According to it, I flew from Marseilles France to off the coast of Nigeria and back up to Italy in about 3 hours. Must be the fastest Beech 18 in world! :d Going to have to get the committee to check it out and make a decision for me. But I expect I'll be heading east out of Italy for the next leg.

I'll post the pictures up in the hotel thread...

Looks like Duenna lost all communication with FS for a sec and reported all zeros.. Zero Long, Zero Lat, Zero Altitude, etc. Hope it works out for ya. :)

Willy
October 27th, 2009, 15:38
Might have it sorted out. I was using a 2006 version of FSUIPC. I've updated to the latest. We'll see how it works out.

So, it's time to fly from LIBR to LGIR to see if I can break the Duenna again....

Hey All,

I take it you were delivering that nitro? :bump:

-Ed-

Willy
October 27th, 2009, 18:38
I can neither confirm or deny the presence of nitroglycerine in that crate. Should you want to open it however, let me get to the other side of the airport first... :engel016:

Good flight from Italy to Crete. Approach and final were kinda rough as all the clouds dropped my fps down to 4-5. Nothing like landing in the middle of a slide show......

Took off from Crete in the middle of a thunderstorm. Now in the clear at cruise altitude, kicked back and heading east......

Listening to the Gin Blossoms "Just South of Nowhere".. seems fitting somehow.

I sure miss the old duenna program. I never had these kinds of problems with it. Same thing as before... it thinks I went to Africa. I got a flight analysis shot as a back up. Grrrr......

ETA: This old comp occasionally freezes up for a few seconds. No rhyme or reason to it, it just happens now and again. I suspect the freeze ups have something to do with it.

Very strange errors there Willy

But we can see the log shows you enroute on your appointed flight path then suddenly jumping to 0 latitude and 0 longitude twice.

For some reason in this same time period your got the Same Aircraft error as well as a bunch of Warning: FS unavailable

I can not really say why it happened but it clearly is a good leg.

Willy

Hmm... I might want to do a complete look over of the Beech before I un-pause ;)

Took longer than I thought. Our 600lb colt Chief decided that he was Mr Billy Bad Arse and we had to have a "Come to Jesus" moment or three with him. I like to have caught a hoof upside my head a couple of times in the process, but he's being a good boy again now. Darn that rascal is strong!

I'll be un-pausing here in a few minutes.

Willy
November 3rd, 2009, 20:51
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the Captain. Our navigator has apparently gotten into the medicinal brandy again. At this point we have no clue where Rangoon is, so we shall continue on to where we think Bangkok might be. Nothing to worry about, just a typical Flight 19 snafu.....

ETA Destination: We're gonna be a bit late to where ever we're going due to a 10kt headwind the whole trip this far...

Willy
November 4th, 2009, 09:26
Wasn't a tad late getting there, but my ISP had a service outage in this area about 20 mins from landing at Bangkok. Which made the clicking the Real Wx unable to connect to the internet box every minute or so a lot of fun.

Okay, here's the deal.. I possibly can fly from here to Darwin in one straight shot. The only catch is that it's right at the end of my range according to the default flight planner and we all know how reliable that is. WRRK is almost on the direct flight path, about half way to Darwin and is an approved airfield. So, I'm going to give it my best shot to go straight to Darwin. If it looks risky at WRRK, I'm going to land there to refuel and reassess the situation. If my fuel situation looks good, then I won't land and just continue on to Darwin.

Should be an "interesting" few hours.....

Willy
November 9th, 2009, 16:37
UPDATES

0715 local.. leveled out at 11,500 with a 7kt headwind.. According to my navigator, Darwin is within reach if the weather doesn't get any worse.

Drat!!! It did it again about an hour into the flight. I'm leaning towards the psu at this point. Or better said the fans in the psu. They've been making a lot of noise for a while now and quieted down a bit a few days ago. Just checked and there's no air blowing out of the psu and the top of the case is pretty darn warm right now. This 480w psu came out of Mrs Willy's old comp and is as old as my comp. I guess 7 years is a bit much to expect out of a psu.

Time to put the race on hold and order some parts. :banghead:

Tough break dude.. But I've been there.. MANY years ago, I overclocked my 486-DX2-66 to 133 Mhz and it went on fire on me running fs4 or 5 i dont remember.. :)

Willy
November 16th, 2009, 08:46
Nothing overclocked here. Just a psu with a dodgy fan that's been making noise for a couple of years now. Going to go get a new one here in a bit.

Willy
November 16th, 2009, 17:35
Got a new psu, installed it and it sprang to life, then died about 3 seconds later :banghead:.

So I put the old one back in, left the "cowling" (side cover) off and am running it until I can get back to the shop where I got the new one tomorrow. It's running a lot cooler now than it has for a long time.

So, I'm going to try and finish this thing again. El samo precision time guesstimate of 3:35:00.

Thanks guys! I can't take any credit for the precision flight estimate. domlimpio did pretty good with it so I just used his numbers as I sure didn't have a clue. To be honest, I didn't think I'd be getting that close anyway. :ernae: to olli for his numbers.

Now to do it again in the Cessna Skymaster!
