I enjoyed the Freeware Gems for FS9 and I think this thread should be the
start for FSX freeware gems.
I know there are some good ones out there that need to be
mentioned and some that we all may not be familiar with.

Any takers out there to start this off? :gameon:

I propose the freeware aircraft of Dave Garwood, one of the first 'known' freeware developers to embrace native FSX models and give us some wonderful and accurate models like the DH Rapide, Bristol Beaufighter, Hawker Hunters and the best yet, the Auster Autocar......

Wow didnt know about the Mt Everest.

Freeware gems?

Scenery: Tim Barne's Whakatane Airport (NZ), Ant's Boonah (and proabably the rest but havent tried it out yet), Tim Arnot's Enstone.

Aircraft: Was going to mention the Auster Autocrat and Piglets marvels (my favourite is the Zlin Z50) but beaten to it. Others are Empek's SZD-30 Pirat and the T-45 Goshawk and F-14 Tomcat by Dino Cattaneo

A difficult thing about this thread is whether to include FS2004 aircrafts which port over to FSX without any problems as well. Well in any case I will limit myself to genuine FSX models. As what one considers "no problems" might be quite different for somebody else.

Some of the first free FSX models, but still among the best!

The Bristol Fighter by Robert Bruce. Available at Flightsim.com (just do a search on "Robert Bruce". Be aware that the complete set is 4 seperate downloads).

Sadly still nothing from Robert later that 28 december 2008........

Dino Cattaneos freeware T-45 and F-14D, just stunning in combination with Javiers carriers!

The OZx Sceneries, Grand Canyon, Tuscay, Death Valley

Dave Garwood has a nice Beaufighter, Hawker Hunter and DH Dragon Rapide, too!

I love Piglets Zlin-50, quite simple aircraft, but it looks and flies great!

Empeckīs Pirat sailplane is stunning, too, with Simprobe and CumulusX!

Reminds me that I need to get me some of those nice SimHangar planes again

I think one should define exactely what is a "jem" for FSX.
Is it a pure FSX SDK addon, or are FS9 SDK addons tolerated too ? Despite what the "port-over haters" may say, some of the FS9 planes are true jems that fully deserve their place in a FSX SP2 hangar, even if they keep some visual/functionnal flaws after texture/transparency corrections.
Typical examples: some of the default FS9 planes, like the Comet, the Trimotor or the Vega, are working just perfect in FSX and they have some of the nicest virtual cockpits ever seen.

While I donīt usually use portovers in FSX due to FPS, I donīt see why they shouldnīt be included if they are good in FSX. It would just be nice if it would be mentioned that they are MDL8 models.

In addition to the classic's made by Dave Garwood, Tim Conrad and Robert Bruce there are two others I would like to mention.

The first is the outstanding RWD-14 Czapla by Piotr Mika and Lukasz Kubacki. This aircraft is simply brilliant - the level of detail for a freeware is unbelievable.

The second is a real favourite of mine ..... Jean-Michel Castagne's sweet FSX Bleriot XI "La Manche". You may not go very far, very fast in this, but this is what real flying is all about! :jump:

Hi,
I'll add the beautifull sceneries of Jim Dhaenens (Pensacola and Meridian are my favorite ones)!!

Taking off from Jim's NAS Pensacola in Dino's T45C, flying East during few minutes just before a 3rd wire trapping on the Javier's Nimitz : what else? I love FSX/Acceleration!! :bump:

If, like me, you fly around the UK using the Horizon VFR FSX photo scenery (payware), you can populate pretty much all of England and Wales with super quality airfields all free of charge.

You will need some scenery libraries too, for the full effect, but they are all readily available at FS.Com or Avsim. Once you have the libraries installed, these airfields are less than 1mb each to DL. A great many also have autogen trees for the surounding areas too!

Some great work by several talented freeware developers, all listed here...

http://www.horizonsimulation.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2761

This one is fully 'stand alone' with no need to DL other libraries, hence a 20mb DL size!

To see how good these are, click the link below for an example of a fully detailed aerodrome that is just a runway in default FSX...

Section F8's F86 (http://sectionf8.com/) Yea, it's FS9 model, but it flies beautifully in FSX with their intermediate fix. And their support via their forum is better than some of the payware support.

This thread is very promising but not very active... Shame... Here's a few ideas...

There is a wonderful freeware Native FSX/DX10 Embraer EMB-120 in the works (by euroastar350 from Eagle Rotorcraft Simulations, based on the Erick Cantu unfinished version). Still lacking a VC. Some 2D panel available at simviation. Screenshot by Altec. Eaglestar repaint by J. Zeitschel.

24661

I like a lot the Posky Embrear ERJ-135. I think it's a FS9 model. It ports over to FSX ok. There is a very nice VC if you replace some gauges (something wrong with some light reflection effect over the glass cockpit I believe). I've reworked the 2D panel to make it look like the VC (in the Posky version, the gauges are in different locations, I hate when VC and 2D are not similar!)

24662 24663 24664

ERJ-135 by Project Open Sky. Midwest Connect repaint by Samy Fay. 2D panel adapted from the one made by Pierre Fasseaux. VC panel fixed for FSX with default FS9 Lear 45 gauges (yes you read right, downgrading to older Lear PFD and EICAS is the trick here!).

If you like Gliders, search David Rowberry at flightsim.com, he has a nice collection of hangliders and sailplanes including the Genesis and the Horten. Michal Puto's Pirat is a winner too.

As everyone says, anything from the Pig master himself is great. With his birds, you can cover just about every genre of FSing except for maybe gliders(see above) and tubeliners (check HJG, Posky..etc).

Yes it works extremely well.
I believe one or two of the planes on this site get a problem with the engine starter gauge, which struggles to really start. However, all of the rest of the gauges are just working and displaying perfectly.

Although PAD list them as FSX, they are really FS9 adaptations and will not as smoothly on many PC's as fully native aircraft, freeware or not.

I made a rule when I moved to FSX 'NO PORTOVERS' and although miss some of all time faves in FSX like Rick P's Andover and Argosy, I do at least have smooth VCs and good frame rates.

Enjoy!
That link is dead....
Could you maybe relink to active one? Thanks. :wavey:

Scenery - most certainly all the OZx adds (stand-out pacakge in my thought), Ant's Aiports and don't forget Orbx has published some beautiful freeware scenery to go with their payware regions!

Aircraft - Special honours to Mr Tim Conrad who gave us (and continues to amaze us) beautiful freeware FSX aircraft while we all waited for more payware products to arrive. Dave Garwood's planes are marvels; Ant's Tiger Moth, Mick Posh's freeware Piasecki flying banana and Warwick Carter's freeware Texan all hold special places in my freeware hall of fame!
