And so, it began! Having landed at Le Bourget airport at the end of the first leg of the great race...

14121

Our hero did what any normal, enterprising tourist would do...he hotwired and "borrowed" a Waco biplane sitting beside the runway, and went for a jaunt about town to see the wondrous sights...

14122

The old, familiar sound of wind whistling through the wires of the biplane's wings awakened memories of the peerless aviator's days in the Great War...when he had stood proudly at attention while Kaiser Willy himself had pinned the Imperial Hohenzollern Medallion for Gross Incompetence Beyond The Realm of Possibility (tm) to his chest..

((complete with authentic WWI-era scenery...uh))

Just guessing...the passengers from Arkansas must be thrilled to see beautiful Rome from such an interesting perspective. (That is, those passengers who have put up with their pilot's flying for these many miles. Can't decide what to use those paper bags for--put over their heads to cover up their eyes or for something else...)

"Ladiesh and gentlemen....hic....prepare to land...at Athensh or shomewhere....it'sh all Greek to me...hic"
15202

As soon as the gooney bird of the distant Ozarks came to a lurching stop, von Wrecktoften staggered out of the pilot's seat, threw open the door to the passenger cabin and tossed a celebratory bottle of birthday vodka (that he had half-finished during his two-hour odyssey to Greece) into the lap of Ms. Winnie Cloud of Little Rock , who sat fidgeting nervously in seat 5A. According to witnesses, the unfortunate Arkansan promptly fainted...

Upon landing at Athens, all of von Wrecktoften's passengers abandoned their notorious gooney bird driver, save one...sitting in seat 5A, Winnie Cloud of Little Rock, Arkansas, sat guzzling a bottle of Scotch whiskey as the DC-3 lumbered eastward. Along with the sinister Baron and his copilot on loan from the Luftwaffe, Major Wilhelm Klink (who was certain he would be promoted to colonel once the race was over), the inebriated Arkansan finally landed in Cyprus several hours later...

The Air Services Incident Report reads:

The crew, distracted by a book on military history and the muffled screams of a lady passenger, deviated from proper practices, made a significant navigational error and landed, without authorization, at a Military Airport 12 nm from it's intended destination. Obvious physical differences between the layouts of the two fields did not trigger adequate warnings to the crew prior to the landing and the aircraft made a full-stop. Upon realizing the error, the crew commenced an unauthorized takeoff without clearances and continued to the correct destination where a safe landing was made. Additional legal actions by the military authorities notwithstanding, the crew is liable for appropriate sanctions as follows - ... Company crew-training procedures may be subject to further investigation by this Board. The usual "unprepared" penalty applies and the crew are lucky not to be rotting in a Pakistani Military prison alongside the bones of a supreme court justice. (Given that the Duenna records show the time OIZJ to OPMR, the aircraft should refuel and take off from OPMR (not OPKC) and continue on to the next destination.)

Hey Mike,

Are you sure about that? If i remember the rules right you can land anywhere and just not stop the duenna then takeoff continue and wouldn't be penalized.

If I read his text file right, his flight time was 2:56:21, if he didn't start rolling until 5:06:04 then that flight time puts it at 8:02:25 which was when he made the 2nd landing at OPKC.. I'm not sure why Duenna records the final destination at OPMR but his text file indicates that he landed, waited a couple mins (probably wondering where he was) then took off and flow over there and landed again.

His Duenna did not stop until after he reached OPKC.

Regards,

MM

I (we) stand corrected. Excellent pick up Eamonn.

It appears that vW got that Ozark DC-3 off the tarmac before the Pakistani Military Police were able to catch him. Less than 2 minutes on the ground itself without really stopping. Congratulations to the pilot for quick reactions and a clean getaway!

Perhaps the vigorous exhortations of Ms. Winnie Cloud of Little Rock served some purpose after all.

The official investigation is closed. No penalty.

And so it ended. The moment the lumbering gooneybird touched down, a throng of reporters and the curious skittered up through the pouring rain to greet the intrepid adventurers. As Ms. Winnie Cloud and Major Klink stepped out to give interviews a sinister figure quietly skulked around the other side of the plane, stole a bottle of aged scotch from an unattended refreshment table under a dripping umbrella, hot-wired a shiny new Lockheed Vega and flew off for parts unknown.

Two days later Major Wilhelm Klink received notice of his promotion to colonel.

Ms. Winnie Cloud became a fervent leader of the Anti-Temperance movement, industriously defying the hated Volstead Act at every opportunity by setting up cleverly-hidden whiskey distilleries all over the Ozarks. Unknown to her, Prohibition had been repealed during the preceding year.
She had taken her first swig of demon whiskey at the end of a fateful flight on an Ozark Airlines DC-3.
