Ted posted a fantastic guide to building a new rig with proven parts. Thank you.

Everything I'm reading says i7 920 is the sweet spot. Query: say I get one (stock speed 2.66 GHz). How fast would I need to rev it up?

To get what result, you ask? From what I hear, we're still not at the point where FSX can run smooth with all sliders right. So, whatever you think is reasonable. I like eye candy and framelock at 20 fps, with my stock Q6600, WinXP-32,* 4Gb RAM, and Nvidia 8800GT. Needless to say, I don't always get my 20 fps!

When I upgrade, I want to see a big jump. Yes, I know I could OC my current Q6600. (And I do like having a quad for the texture loading.) But this will be my wife's computer after I'm done with it, and I don't want to shorten the life of the CPU and create weird problems that are going to frustrate her down the line. Also, I like my computer to be quiet.

So, back to my original poser: how much would I need to OC the 920?**

* Plan to upgrade to Win7-64 on a new hard drive, probably in December.

** I know what I'd like to hear: "You don't need to!" But I'd rather hear the real answer.

3.4 to 3.6 will do it for the 920

But...Ocing that Q6600 will not shorten its life eighter...Nor make it louder.

BUT X58 and a 920 is great future proofing

And it's VERY easy to overclock into that range within a matter of minutes. I LOVE my 920 !!! :ernae:
