Hi mathias, i just got the email tonight and sent you a reply cheers. I'm having a bit of a conversion problem you mite be able to help me with, when i export the meteor scene from max 1.2 to max 7 via mdl converter with Xfile when i try convert the imported scene to editable poly to work on it the whole thing just welds to one big mass although if i convert to editable patch it dosn't do it but then has a load more edges?

I'm just wondering if it mite be the conversion settings of the mdl converter but no matter what i do the same seems to happen every time, is there a way to send to max and just have it as editable poly without converting to patch first without starting from scratch?

cheers
john

Not sure if i'm doing something wrong here but when i attach the frames to fuselage and try welding the two were the cockpit tub is extruded into the fuselage it just says no weldable vetex's within threshhold, for the final model could i keep the frames as a seperate object and just line it up at the fuselage or might this cause problems....sorry to be a pain.;)

Hi John,

first off, there is no problem leaving the canopy frame in a separate mesh, I usually have hundreds of pieces in my stuff and never faced an issue with that.

Your exporting troubles may be due to several reasons.

First, it's a good idea to reset xform and next convert to editable mesh on all your parts prior to exporting from Gmax to x-file. The reset xform command is available from the utilities tab.

Second make shure that "optimize" and "weld points" is dissavled in the FS exporter dialogue.
Also better use the FS2002 exporter, not the FS2004 exporter as the first one allows for a better detail to port over.

Third make shure that your unit scale in both Gmax and Max is configured to meters.

Fourth after exporting back via 3ds you may want to weld points on all bits and pieces, treshold at 0.001 meters.

Alternativley to the 3ds export you may want to check out the BFF method.
