I have Rail Simulator (which is done by the people who did Microsoft Train Sim) and its follow on, Railworks. I prefer RS right now, if I'm honest, because I have more stuff for it, but they both look vastly better than Trainz.

I know a lot of people who are utter Trainz nuts, because they like running masses of trains at once and basically playing controller rather than just driver. I prefer playing driver and find RS/RW more realistic from that perspective. http://www.railsimulator.com/

I also ran the demo of Trainz and couldn't complete the demo activity because the fiddly way of manually switching points wouldn't allow me to change the lay of the ones I specifically needed to move, which weighed heavily against it when it came to spending money. Trainz, however, has much more free content available I am told.

I have Trainz 2004 and Rail Simulator, and I like Rail Simulatur much more. It seems more polished, and modern than Trainz.

There's not a demo for Railworks (Rail Sim 2) yet, but it's very similar to Rail Sim, with some improvements.

And for all those who complain about having to pay for updates to FS models between sims? You have to pay full price again for every single commercial add-on converted from RS to RW. Only JustTrains have done any updating at all for free.

fyi : the last version of trainz is 2009 not 2004 !! so a 2004 demo wouldn't be a good representation !

There is one thing about train simulators (both of them, but it's more Trainz problem). If you want to install one route you have to download and install many other smaller addons. This is why I gave up on Trainz, and why I haven't bought Railworks.

Imagine - if FS was built that way, you'd want to install one airport, and have to download ground textures, buildings, cars, effects, fences, etc. from many different sites, only to find that many of them doesn't exist anymore.

You mean like the many, many, masses of object libraries that most freeware FS9 sceneries and increasing numbers of FSX ones use? ;)

It all comes down to reinventing the wheel. If someone has already done a XYZ3754 loco, or a Bill Bloggs & Son coal truck, or for that matter a Bellman hangar for Halfpenny Green, then I can either waste huge amounts of time remodelling what someone else has done, or I can use their object. Chances are they'll want to keep control of their objects, rather than having even the appearance of someone else claiming to be the creator of their work, so you download the library/object as a separate file.

FS has been doing it for years! :ernae:

Believe me, if it would be two, five, or even ten libraries I wouldn't complain at all, but all the routes I've downloaded had a list of over hundred single objects to download from various sites. Some of them were not available.

A bunch of bugfixes, it looks a little more "polished" and it costs more. ;)

I'd think of it as being FS2002 to FS2004, not FS2004 to FSX.

OK, I see your point. :isadizzy:

I think that's definitely more the case with Trainz than RS from my experience. My interest lies more in the UK that anywhere else, so my usual stop for routes has been http://www.uktrainsim.com - most of the routes there have needed twenty or thirty objects at most, but they've all been common so once installed, that's it.

Oh. One other nice(ish) thing about RS/RW - it has a built in tool for adding and removing additional content.

Trainz is more a model rail simulator, for those of us who would like a decent layout but don't have the room.

The editor in it is simply stunning + some kind chaps are making the entire east coast mainline for it :ernae: (UK east coast tht is)
