I've never tried overclocking, though I've always wanted to. My (lack of) comprehension of the correct way to go about it, has kept me from trying.

Help in doing so would be great. I've always been worried about blowing it up...:kilroy:

Step 1 Get the latest BIOS and flash it

Step 2 Use the AiBooster to utility to overclock since you are new to this-get it here:

Step 3 Voltages
find out what the max voltage is for your Prescott Core P4 and set the voltage inside the AiBooster before you start moving up FSB

Also find out what the max voltage is on your Corsair Twin X memory-but don't move that up to max do it incrementally.

Warning make sure you have a great CPU and fan Heatsink the OEM will not do

I'm running BIOS v1019 currently. The latest is v1024 beta. The word beta scares me. I don't like them.

Any thoughts on which I should get?

Here's my set-up for the fan/heatsink. Will I be ok?

Nope that is the range it can handle...go up incrementally and then check for stability using Prime95 and memtest86 all freeware

I would try to crank it to 1.35 and see if it will hold 3.4Ghz there if not crank a little higher voltage- Check your temps often

Seems I can't crank up the cpu through AiBooster. Or, if I can, I'm not seeing where too do it.

I also see that the multiplier is locked. I read somewhere that there's a different BIOS that unlocks it. I can't trace that either.

You will not be able to change the multiplier on that CPU, so let's see if these instructions will help you:

How to Overclock using the BIOS and AiOverclocker

First let me tell you that your memory is probably going to hold back anything you do to your CPU because unless you use a better grade of memory your higher settings will mean nothing if your memory lags behind but with this info you should be able to OC a little.

With the P4P800, you should not use the presets:
First go in the BIOS to the advanced settings and "Jumper Free" configuration.

Then lock the AGP/PCI fqcy on 66.66/33.33. Because your RAM is Corsair 3200, you will not be able to overclock at 1:1 ratio (400 MHz) and will have to reduce the ratio to 5:4 (320 MHz) in the "DRAM frequency" setting.

Set the "AI overclock tuner" to "manual". Now you can start to increase the FSB speed under "CPU external frequency".

Do this step by step with steps of 5 MHz and check each time for system stability.

Theoretically, your RAM would be able to support a fsb speed of 250 MHz which brings it back to it's nominal frequency (250*4/5 = 200), but your Prescott CPU will surely not make it without extra cooling and voltage adjustments. You could however expect to be able to reach a 230 MHz fsb speed (cpu at 3.45 MHz) without trouble.

After each new setting, watch your CPU temps with the Asus probe!!!

Note that at that speed your RAM is still underclocked and that depending on the application, this could result in lower total performance. What you win in CPU speed, you loose in RAM speed. Therefore, I would not recommand to overclock your system very high if you don't plan to change your RAM (for example for Corsair PC4000 or higher). You would have to run your current memory voltage up to 2.8V and timings of 3-4-4-8 to OC-doubltful that your memory will hold these timings

One last point is about some Asus special features: the "performance mode" and the "memory acceleration mode" (in the chipset settings).

First try to disable them all (MAM disabled, Performance mode on standard), because those could cause your system to refuse to boot. Once you've reached a fsb that's high enough and stable, try to enable the MAM and later to set the performance on turbo. Don't do both operations at the same time.

Just be warned that if your system refuses to boot after too much agressive settings, you will probably need to disconnect the power plug of your system for one or two minutes before it accepts to boot again.

Well, I guess I can't OC. No matter what I try, it locks. Makes me wonder if my CPU, memory or MB is about to crap out. Or the VC even. Hope not. I can't afford a new machine yet.

I since set everything back to their default.

Today I fired up FS2004. Was going to take a jaunt over the mountains to do some exploring. Nope. Can't do it. For some strange reason I'm getting a LOT of artifacts and it's locking up.

I don't know if this is happening due to my trying to OC my rig or not. Could be coincidence. Awhile back when I was flying in FSX, I was getting LOTS of artifacts. Which forced me to run default settings. FSX was worse than FS9 then. Now, with what's going on, I can't even get in a flight on FS04.

I deleted the FS9.cfg to see if that was the issue. It wasn't.

Oh well. Poop happens!!

That sounds like Vuid card heat..

If you use ATI go into Overdrive..Unlock it , and set your fan speed at 100% for a test or two..Then driop back to maybe 60%

If Nvidia..Use EVGA Percission to set the fan speeds up.

I see...You have the 3850...Great card but no adjustments on the fan...

Use HWMonitor to see your vid card temps..

If over 55 -65 you need something like Riva Tuner to set the fan speed up..

Hmmm

Plenty cool...If its artifacting at that temp you might be loosing the card...

That temp is great..

It may be a corrupted driver.....You can uninstall it and reinstall it again and see...

What catalist version are you running? If you are running the newest 9.9 then you need to use a driver cleaner in safe mode after you uninstall it...If you go down in Catalist

That card may run better with the Catalist 9.4 or 9.6

v9.7 is what I had. After some more testing, I've come to a conclusion that the card is going out. When exactly....who knows. I reverted back several versions of catalyst drivers. Stopping at v8.5 which was the only known good driver for this particular card. I'll run it for as long as I can. I've got a ATIX850XT Pro for back-up.

Harley or Texnet,

Can Dell machines be overclocked? I have a nice i7 940 with an GTX 295 and would love to tweak more power out of her. I have seen on other forums Dells are not particularly overclock friendly, but would love to try. Afterall, FSX can never have enough power, for all of the addons.

I have a Dell XPS 720, and it is fair to O/C

It should be the same process, at start up go in to the BIOS screen, once there use the arrow keys to go down to the Performance tab on the left hand side, press the + key and this should open up to show Advanced etc . You need to go in to Advance so arrow down till it is hightlighted then press enter. This then takes on to the core speed again use the arrow keys to increase or decease the speed. You will also have to turn on the Performance Application to Yes. Press enter, then escape save the settings, and the machine will re-start.

When you go in to the control panel, systems it should show the need core speed.

Many of the newer,higher end Dell systems do allow moderate overclocking....I'm unsure if it'll be covered under warranty however should any issues arise.

Thanks for the updates guys. I tried to OC before and it didn't semm to produce much, but have a newer machine and better graphics cards as well. Perhaps a good weekend project with all the dang snow we get up here. Oh, to be back in central Texas or PNW again.....

Matt there are some workarounds to OCing the new dells but only on certain models not all i7s they turn out have a motherboard that OC friendly. PM me with you exact model on the back of your PC and serial number.

Thanks. I am currently TDY for the week, but will hit you and Harleyman both up for the OC advice when I return. I think I've got a pretty good upper end machine and want to take advantage of the hardware for what it's capable of versus just the vanilla filling they go out the door with. Talk to you in a week,
