Amish Country Outing

This afternoon, Deb and I, along with Deb's mom and step-dad, took a short trip out to Amish Country, which is only like 8 miles or so from our house. Stopped at a little Amish "store" and bought close to 5 pounds of very good cheese (Baby Swiss, Colby, and Colby/Jack) for the very wallet friendly price of $9.00. Got a 2 pound bag of extra dark Dutch cocoa powder for $1.50 (time to make some no bake cookies), a 2 pound bag of honey roasted peanuts for $1.50, and a tub of extra strong chili powder for less than a dollar....and this is the good stuff...very dark brownish red.

Then we stopped at a country general store for ice cream. Two scoops and I was about to pop...they serve the biggest scoops I have ever seen..and cheap. In total, we got 5 scoops of ice cream for $7.00...and this is premium stuff.

Deb and I stopped at a flea market we had not been to before. They had a very nice rail road telephone, the kind that has a crank on the end of the box (almost like the telephones used by the US military during WW2, but smaller). It was in incredible shape and the generator thing still worked...I could hear the static in the head set. I now know what I want for Christmas LOL! Deb got a ceramic dolphin figurine....she loves dolphins.

Was a really great late summer day out and about. Can't wait to dig into the cheese.

back when i was 2nd yr apprentice, there was an amis guy who used to come to our shop 1st wed of the month, and sell apple fritters. they were HUGE and they were only 85 cents! they had apple chunks throughout. i never had much $$ back then, but somehow i always made sure i had enough to buy at least one. somehow i don't recall ever sharing with the wife....

We always eat at the "Der Dutchman" restaurant. The desserts are to die for!
We go to this place called "Heini's", where they make some of the best cheeses, not to mention their beef jerky! Yummy! We always come back home with breads, cookies, pies, veggies, cheeses, etc....Best part is you can freeze most of that stuff, so you can enjoy some of their treats for quite a while.

My saddle for my horse was made by the Amish in Ohio. Quality work that should last a lifetime if I take proper care of it.

We've got Mennonites around here that are pretty much like the Amish, just that they will use modern equipment. They've got a country store out near Rutherford that we go to every now and then.

Oh yeah. . .Amish food !! Here in Upper Marlboro, Md. (suburb of D.C.) a large Amish co-op market opened three blocks from my place. I buy a lot of the same stuff, cheeses, baked goods, fresh fruit juices, etc. They come down from Pennsylvania and open up three days a week and are packed from opening to closing.

I can gain two or three pounds just standing around their bakery breathing !

We had some of the colby/jack cheese with supper...my wife made a great big pot of chili late yesterday evening, let it simmer for hours! The chili was superb, with just a touch of HEAT (from the habinero and tiny red Chinese peppers Deb spiked it with), and that creamy cheese was the perfect counter point to the chili. I ate TOO MUCH!

We also got a dozen fresh brown eggs there today. How fresh? The morning supply of gathered eggs were gone, so the young Amish gal went out to the coup to gather our dozen right from under the hens. That is FRESH! Going to do up some eggs, toast and sausage for one of this weekend's meals.

you could also go the other direction to lancaster, which is full of amish as well. it's farther than the ohio border is for you, but you get to pass through hershey, and well, i suppose i don't need to explain the benefits of doing that.:icon_lol:

it's interesting how little is known about them outside of their community.
same with them mennonites. the thing is, they have their problems like any other community. there have been drug busts (sorry, but i still find the mental picture pretty funny) and theft, and many of the everyday ills the rest of us are plagued with. their community is shrinking because more often than not, youths get a taste of the outside world and decide not to return to the rigidity of their sect. it's a hard way to live, i couldn't do it.

When I was a kid, one of the best vacations we could take as a family was going to Lancaster or Ohio for the Amish country vistations ... some great stuff to be sure.

I'll tell ya if everyone on this planet lived that way this world would be a dfferent place for sure.

Cuba had a high rate of violent crime before castro, all related to Chicago corupt political machine and lots of tax evasion amongst other things. So actually nothing changed, just dictators. Oh and under US backed Bautista human rights were always violated. Cuba does have a unique love hate history.

But back on track to the Amish, when I was in Green Bay I always went north to Bondual and just outsid ethe community was a Amish community. Always went grocery shopping there. Love there cheeses and fine made chairs.
