I have a 775 pin 6850 core2 duo 3 gig processor and I believe a Nvidia geforce 8800 gts with 512mb and I was considering either upgrading to a nvidia 285 card or getting new motherboard and intel 920 and DDR 3 memory? Which do you think would be better I don't have a whole lot of money right now! Card is around 300 or 350 if I go the other option it's going to be around 700.

You have a good CPU.....You have a better than fair Vid card...

You did not mention your ram or its speed....

I have one core and no memeory lol and fsx runs fine for me well to a certain point just try turning your settings down or open your fsx.cfg file and changing the ...texture_bandwithdth_multiplyer to 11 its should look like this.. TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=11 and it helped my frames no end stops all jerkiness lol!!
Bananabob showed me this on a thread months ago mate so I'm taking no credit, my frames were amazing after that!
Hope I've helped mate.
Regards Pete!

I think you mean that you have an Intel E6850 as there never was an E8650 made. What motherboard is your E6850 sitting on because I suspect your 128 bit 512 MB video card is your problem?

Sorry wasn't home when posted it's a 8800 gts oc by bfg and is 512 mb version and yes it's the 6850 CPU and it's on an ASUS p5wdg2 ws professional motherboard. I get good frames but with most settings on mid range I get about 20 fps with the new jetstream 41 from pmdg and was looking for some better ones. memory it's 4 gig Of 800 DDR2.

OK that makes more sense. Is this the G80 GPU-early 8800GTS? Or the newer G92GPU? The reason I ask is because there were some issues with how the early G80 version handled bandwidth. I don't think they ever made a BIOS fix on any of the boards to address it but I could be wrong. The G92 version of the 8800GTS was the correction and it was a much faster better built video card. There are still tons of them in use and they work pretty well with FSX. If you have flashed the BIOS to version 0905 you can upgrade to a wolfdale core 2 duo E8600 or a cheaper upgrade would be a better video card besides the G80 GPU if that is what version of 8800GTS you have. Also with the new BIOS flash you can use 1066mhz memory. Make sure you are running the board with dual channel memory for best results

its the newer G92GPU. I do have the latest bios. would upgrading memory to 1066mhz really do better for me and is the core 2 duo e8600 better for me or will the graphics card upgrading to a Nvidia 285 show the greatest improvement?

Well ya need better ram....

That will also go hand in hand with a better CPU...The E8600 is awsome...I run mine at 3.6 and FSX loves it with a 3850 radeon vid card...

Stop worrying about your system, you've got a good one, just learn to tweak the game, trust me I've been using FSX for 2 years and I learn something new everyday!

Overclock that CPU. I have my 6850 perking at 3.6 GHz and stable. I do have an aftermarket cooler (Xigmatek S128) and an Antec 900 case, so it stays nice and cool. I locked my frames at 28 and I usually get 28 unless I'm in a high density area like New York City or Los Angeles, but it is still smooth.

Well I might not have to upgrade after all, I lost quality and fps seemed to drop for me for a while now. I used Nhancer for controlling my video and just found out yesterday that the new drivers didnt work with nhancer the old version. I found beta drivers for the new 190. drivers and now the sim looks amazing again and my fps are back up. Thanks everyone, I still might do a little tuning here and there.

Thats why I do not use Nhancer.....Well...I'm an ATI guy...LOL

Glad that you figured it out...:ernae:

always had ATI as well but they at the time didnt have anything to compete with Nvidia cards in my opinion. Both have their strengths. Things are good again :ernae:

nHancer overcomes the shortcoming with the nVidia panel and actually gives the user full control of graphics settings with certain drivers that have a crippled control panel. There is a special version of nHancer for drivers 182.50 and higher, the older nHancer does not work with these new drivers.

I did not know that....Thanks for that info...:ernae:

Also....

If you put a cup of liquid nitrogen on top of your chips, you will get EXCEPTIONAL CPU performance! Off the clock, out of this world, etc, etc. Super cooling.... :d

But.. You dont want to spill it, and it can be pricey.
