View Full Version : ETO Hurricane MkIV ground attack aircraft
Capt. Winters
September 6th, 2009, 06:58
Hi Guys,
here is a MkIV Hurricane, its painted up in the colours of RAF 184 squadron who flew it against the V1 sites in 1943 into early 1944.
it has the volks filter and sports 250lbs, 500lbs, 45gl drop tanks and 8 x 60lb RP's.
Were working on making a 40mm vickers cannon.M3D file to enable the 40mm Vickers S gun weapon that these planes carried for ground attack against armour etc..
I have refined the Hurricane MkIV a bit more by dropping the wing armament to just two 303's one in each wing. this was to help offset the weight of the Vickers 40mm S cannon or the RP's it could carry.
The MkIV carried two 303's for sighting purposes, once the 303's were hitting there target the pilot would then fire the 40mm Vickers.
due to the lack of normal defensive armament, it was necessary to have a escort of fighters to cover them whilst they did their ground work.
see attached pics for details of the new wing armament.
regards Rob.

Can the ETO Aircraft work in the stock CFS3 version?
Capt. Winters
September 6th, 2009, 22:25
Hi Auto Throttle,
They can, but you need to copy over the following folders as well.
(aircraft of choice)
Weapons
Guns
Pylons
sounds
uires
and these single files as well.
Effects.xml
country.xml
unlimitedpilots.xml
allow all to overwrite the existing ones.
I'll have to double check later tonight as there are a couple of others files you would need as well, but I cant remember the names off the top of my head.
you need all these files as stock CFS3 only has 3 countries and the ETO has 20 countries from which the planes are named to.
or you could just copy the following folders over
(aircraft of choice)
Weapons
Guns
Pylons
sounds
and just have all the allied planes defualt to USA and all the axis planes defualt to Germany.
doing all this though would render your stock CFS3 unusable for MP. personally I think it would be more bother than its worth.
hope this helps,
regards Rob.

Thanks for the information Captain. However I'm playing with hard drive space here and I think 100 aircraft will do it for me. I heard some say they have over 1500! I couldnt believe it! Its just too much to keep track of for me. Besides that, I'm also trying to save all of my downloads to a USB drive just to save more space. So all of my aircraft from Nactpiloten and others will be saved in case of a fatal hard drive crash like the one I had with my CFS1. I'm not going to lose these precious babies again! Better safe than sorry right Capt.?

Another beautiful Hurricane!! Many thanks.
How many Hurricane squadrons were still operating from uk in 1943-44?
I'd always imagined they had been replaced totally by Spits and Tiffies by 1942-ish and were either in training units or operating in the mid and far east after that.

:kilroy:Autothrottle, if you have enough HD space, anything may be possible. The CFS3 ETO Expansion 1.0 + 1.20 has well over 200 aircraft in it. Adding in the FP to ETO Heavy Bombers pack brings the total up to around 240 aircraf (+/-). I am currently testing the new ETO Autumn (1.30?) and there are are a number of new aircraft. Also, I have also tested new missions for some some mission builders, often requiring extra aircraft in the install. I have had as many as 450 aircraft in my test install at one time, with no serious problems. I ETO, running your BDP Zapper will cause a lower-end or older machine to start ETO back up very slowly. You might have time to take a nap and/or do some window shopping. LOL It depends upon your machine. My new one does not suffer from this, and I am currently comtemplating trying for 500 just to see what happens.
Yes. Back up all of your downloads on CD's, DVD's or Flash Drives. In the past two years or so, I have downloaded everything I could find for CFS3, including quite a bit of stuff from sites that no longer exist. I now have quite a CFS3 CD/DVD library, divided by site.:d

Don't know but there were still active squadrons of Hurricanes MkIV in december 1943. They suffered extremely heavy losses while attacking V1 sites, it was pure suicide to attack such heavy defended targets with a so slow aircraft.

In ETO, Hurricanes were phased out of frontline service by D-Day, some squadrons converting to Typhoons just before the invasion. Some IIC's were around to provide escort for the navy (I think). Hurricanes were used in Africa/Italy & the Far East until the end of hostilities.

Thanks for the info guys! I'd always thought they had finished frontline service in ETO a lot earlier.

I've seen photos of unarmed MkIIs with invasion stripes, which IIRC were used as fast couriers.

That striped Hurricane looks a lot like the one John painted some time ago. Actually looks like the same aircraft.
And the Mk IV is something of a forgotten model but the forgotten models are just what makes CFS3 so great (despite me flying the Spitfire IX more than all other aircraft combined) - most definitely a warmly welcomed addition. But why on earth are you working on a separate cannon m3d, wasn't the entire Mk IID - that happens to look just about the same - already ready to roll almost two years ago?

Kind of strange seeing the Hurri with invasion stripes. Looks out of place. I guess it's because I only think of them as early-war aircraft.

Hi Guys,
we have a mid 1944 D-Day striped Hurricane in ETO already:
Hawker SeaHurricane MKIIc serial NF572 of No 835 Sq, FAA operating from HMS Niarana during 1944. Aircraft flown by Sub-Lt A.R. Burghama.
As for the MAW MkIId yes your right that plane does look pretty much like this one, but I dont have access to it. Richard was having trouble with the Vickers S gun on that model and thats why it got shelved.
all I need to finish this one off is the Vickers model, which I now have a wip example of. Clive is building it for me, and we have it in game as of tonight, just need to iron out a few wrinckles and its good to go.
we'll update the skin on the MkIV to a high res version before release.
regards Rob.

G'day Rob, don't know if John has spoken to you recently but I suspect he will soon if he hasn't already...:monkies:
Just a little update, the IID built for MAW does have working S-guns, (and accurate Armour Piercing and High Explosive rounds), it simply didn't get released when the MAW team folded up.
The Mk IV was having trouble with it's S-guns, there's a bug in the system regarding cannons and gun pods; they only seem to shoot rifle calibre rounds for some reason (unless someone has discovered a work around for this). The MAW IID doesn't use the S-guns as a seperate loadout, hence no problems...
Anyway, I expect some news might be coming your way on these models soon...

Hiya Winjeel,
the fix is to build the weapons into the aircraft model.
Do not attach them as a selectable payload.
Winjeel
September 9th, 2009, 04:03
G'day Mat, yeah that's what I was saying before; the IID has the S-guns built in, they are not a selectable payload and they work fine.
You can't do that with the Mk IV or you will have 40mm rounds available even when you have rockets, bombs or fuel tanks selected as the payload. IMHO it's better to leave the S-guns out of the Mk IV's arsenal than have an aircraft which has rockets and S-guns available at the same time.
If someone wants to fly using S-guns, just select a Hurricane IID. If they want rockets, go for the Mk IV.

Correct but incorrect. Yep, you created cannon rounds but they still have the hitting power of a rifle round. I tried it with a Bf 109G that was firing 75mm rounds from the gun pods (the poor thing barely flew with all that lead on board) and while it was the fireworks of the century there was absolutely no destructive power to be mentioned.

Hi Guys,
I have been working with Richard Mason's MkIV Hurricane model. This is a slightly differant shape to the current hurricane models we have. (around the wing area the dihedral has been reduced) and the wing strenghtend, it has upped values for armour around radiators etc so you can survive flak damage a bit better.
we had to finish off the pylons for the rockets, texture map etc. and also had to work through Richards WIP weapons files, anyway long story short its all fixed and working in game.
the plane has some cool loadouts,
40mm S gun AP & HE with distinctive weapons and effects for each.
Rockets 25Lb & 60Lb
mixed loads
bombs and rockets
Fuel and rockets etc etc
When using the S guns if you sight with the two 303's just like in real life when you see your tracer stiking home fire the S gun and BOOM end of target. with out the 303's being fired its very hard to hit smaller targets, again just like in real life.
John Whelan had provided evidance about the rocket placement and we have replicated that, they have been moved outboard.
Hope you all like it.
A huge thanks to Richard (Winjeel) Mason :ernae: for sharing his source files and allowing us to work with them.
regards Rob.

:kilroy:Lewis11777, that's not a radar pod, it's a drop tank. Some Mk IV's often carried assymetrical loads, depending upon the task at hand.:d

if you compare dancats original "gatlin"set up to what i made. you'll see that first on loadout name you call the caliber you want.second you call the weapon (gatlin guns or WB_81A). then in the payload line you call up the payload element of the weapon folder for the caliber you called on, in the name.then for payloadtype you call the "gun" folder round. i made up different weapon folders for each caliber.for the 20mm_vulcan i copied the gatlin gun and renamed a weapon folder called 21_gat1 and 21_gat2 and named the files inside that the same, for example.yeah its involved.

i don't know who made "payload element" possible dancat. that term calls the weapon folder of a gatling of a different caliber. make a new folder in weapons. call it what ever you want as long as it doesn't interfere with another caliber name.copy the caliber into it. open the xdp. on the top line, name the m3d the name of the folder. this is where you modifie the effects. then rename the m3d in that folder the same name.then you need to write the aircraft xdp weapon call up line with the folder/m3d name. now its a different caliber gatlin. as far as what "fill" doe's. i don't know.the "1" may indicate repeat refill is possible. just guessing on that. if you are trying to do it with a different gun type.i would follow the same procedure and see what happens.thats how i got it to work .the main credit goes to dancat for makeing his gatlin. then you for the wb_81a. because you use those "add on weapons" to create the other calibers. IF THERE IS INTEREST. I'LL PUT UP THE OTHER CALIBERS I'VE MADE FOR BOTH WEAPONS. and a babies arm holding an apple
