August 30, 2009 10:33 PM<!-- #EndDate --> MDT Category 4 Hurricane Jimena is bearing down on Baja and is expected to make landfall in Baja California Sur sometime Tuesday. Current forecasts call for Jimena to make landfall near Todos Santos as an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 120kts. If this forecast holds it will be the most powerful hurricane to make landfall in Baja.
It's been fairly benign in the Atlantic so far this year but if Hurricane Jimena holds to predictions there could be a significant impact in Mexico.
While most of the hurricane coverage focuses on the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf states because of the greater population and easier access for the news crews, potential damage to not only resort-rich Cabo San Lucas but agriculture and the Grey Whale calving grounds on the west coast could extract quite a price. Some models from the NHIC suggest it's possible Jimena could increase to a Cat 5.
Coverage may not be extensive (CNN lost $$ and 'face' a couple of years ago when they rushed a crew to Cabo expecting a frontal attack on the resorts and the storm veered in the last hours. Sadly they also missed the damage and loss of life further north along the Sea of Cortes)

Yep, I have more than a passing interest in this one as we have a condo outside of Cabo. Naturally, we booked our flights (for late November) two days ago, which seems a long time away, but some damage takes months to repair as we know. We can change our plans but the people who live and work there are not so fortunate. Let's hope Jimena decides to be a nice lady...
