Hi Guys,
Need a bit of advice here please. I can open .dxf files in Turbosquid's GMAX, I can edit them, but I can't save them as another .dxf file!
Is there any other facilities to GMAX that I get by registering ie that I can then save a dxf file, or is there another programme?
thanks

You can only save to Gmax format from within Gmax.
Everything else would go under the header "export".
It's the nature of the free Gmax that it can export only to validated gamepack formats, means the makers of the export plugin have payed big bucks so that we can use it for free.

Mathias,
Thanks for the info. So is there a way to convert the resulting saved gmax file to a dxf file? Or is there another prog which can display and edit dxf files and save them in this format?

Shessi there is a method thats been around for a while - somebody zipped up a kit to convert - I have it.
There was also a DXF pluggin for exporting that somebody created - among others (part of why GMAX started to lose support), but I've had a look for that and cant find it in my stuff - I dont use GMAX.
The kit is actually for converting from GMAX to FSDS, but the process involves converting to DXF for the CVA convertor to convert to FSDS.
I'll warn you though that the kit loses textures and doesnt always do a great job.
I dont know if it's "politically" correct, but if you want to PM me your email I'll be glad to send it to you

Gary, it's the other way round, you can convert fsds files to gfx which can be imported to gmax, but there's no way to convert Gmax files straight into dxf.
Shessi, there are several methods to convert Gmax files to other formats, all involve that you get one of the supported gamepack exporters and none is really free of losses.
Most common is to export to the quake md3 format, next use Lithunwrap or Deep Exploration to export to your desired format which includes x, 3ds, dxf and others.

Thanx Mathias
Thats the kit I was talking about with Deep Exploration and the md3 export pluggin.
But it doesnt always work very well and texture mapping is lost in the conversion -
We've always needed a good GMAX to FSDS convertor - wonder why one was never created
Cheers
