That’s what we will be doing today. Let’s say your 5000 ft up and your airfield is at 3ft above sea level your ¼ mile from the airfield and you feel asleep or where listening to Metallica or for some other stupid reason you forgot where the airport was, then all of a sudden there it is. How do you get down? This exercise is the standard format from the FAA Aircraft Flying Handbook, U.S. Department of Aviation, Federal Aviation Administration so READ UP you may learn something if you really want to fly.
I quote:
“The objective of this exercise is to improve pilot techniques for airspeed control, wind drift control, planning, orientation, and division of attention. The steep spiral is not only valuable flight training maneuver, but it has practical application while remaining over a selected spot in preparation for landing.
A steep spiral is a constant gliding turn, during which a constant radius around a point on the ground is maintained similar to the maneuver, turns around a point. The radius should be such the steepest bank will not exceed 60’; sufficient altitude must be obtained before starting this maneuver so that the spiral may continue through a series of at least three 360’ turns. The maneuver should not be continued below 1.000 feet above the surface unless performing an emergency landing.”

Let’s start playing

Set settings to 100% real ‘Most of you know this’
Take screenshots of all your settings, I need to see whats going on to grade you.
Set time and weather to 12:00 and winds at 4 to 6 knots max gust 10 on a 310’ heading.
Screenshot the settings.
Select aircraft “Any will do”
The selected airfield today will be Espiritu Santo set fuel for 75% no weapons, no stores. Lean and mean, gentlemen.
Start simulation in free flight I want you boys on the ground not at 5000 feet if where going to learn something together let’s do it right
Turn on your position markers (The Red Numbers and Letters on the top of the screen.}
Do your preflight check, start your engine (s), Drop flaps to 20 since where taking off toward the wind less flaps needed. Check you heading and takeoff.
Watch for side slipping while taking off (wind pulling you to the left or right depending on direction)
Tuck in your aircraft (Retract gears and close flaps as needed)
Climb at 500’ ft per minute heading for the small island to the right of the airfield
Build your airspeed to 180 knots or 207 M.P.H. if in the P-38
Take screenshots of everything you did externally. Head toward the small island just to the northeast of the base go toward the right side of the Island, using it as a Waypoint (turn marker) start a left turn heading back toward the base, continue to climb as you turn remember to keep your airspeed at a constant while turning and do not over compensate on your vertical speed, but do increase to 1000 ft. per minute
Level off at 5000 ft. if your still not 5000 ft. continue past the base go across the both channels and take an easy 180’left hand turn back toward the original waypoint island once there you should be at 5000 ft.
Head back toward the base. Do you see the Island just to the right in the middle of the channels directly behind the base? That’s our fixed point.
When you start coming in from the 1st way point (the first island) turn right in the closest channel to the base
Circle that island once at 5000 ft. at 180 knots, keep in the channels while circling
After you complete the circle continuing turning toward the base but still in the channels
Make your final left turn before starting to descend in channel that is aligned with the runway directly behind the Airfield
Start descending while circling the island remember 3 to 4 full laps of the island. Feel how the wind buffets the aircraft especially when in the channel that aligns with airfield.
Start slowing your aircraft down by using your throttle(s)
Once you have reached landing speeds drop your gear and adjust your flaps accordingly.
On final descent you should be at 1000ft. if not aligned with runway circle again holding your airspeed at a constant
Come down to 500 ft in the Southern most channel; turn left into the channel that is directly aligned with the airbase and land. (Remember wind is at 310’ adjust as needed for sideslip)
Secure your aircraft post your notes and screenshots then tell me how it went.
