It appears that she sunk in an upright position, in other words, as
if she were underway in the ocean; she still seems ready to go after
all these years, sinking upright with keel on the ocean floor (or so
it appears).

i watched the sinking on the Military channel a couple of times, pretty cool video from inside the hanger bay as the way poured in, i felt sad though, she survives Korea, a near-fatal accident in Vietnam and then they let her sit and rot until finally sinking her. why cant they turn em ALL into floating museums or sell em to me.....

They should have sold it to the Royal Navy.
Anything would be better than the "dinky toy" carriers we have got now.

Spent a little time on Oriskany, fine ship with a long career. Still can picture the green wake boiling up, standing on the fantail at high speed.

It's a shame to see a once proud warrior like the "Big O" on the bottom; being used as a "Disneyland" for sport divers and fish.
But on the other hand; it's a much more dignified fate than becoming a "floating casino" in Japan!
RE: The_Editor - "dinky toy" carriers
The Brit's now have a new class of carriers (somewhat "full sized") under construction: The Queen Elizabeth Class. Plus one other; The Prince of Wales to follow.
The keel has been laid (2006) although many specs are not yet finalized. Due for launch in 2009, Comm. 2012.
Aprx. 58,000 tons F/L
Length: 932 ft o/a
Flight deck width: 245 ft
Gas turbine a/o Diesel engines - Electric Drive
25+ knts
Two Islands: One for Nav & one for Air Ops
Semi angled deck with ski-jump
Aprx 35 aircraft Operating the JSF (STOVL variant) Helos & AEW
NO Catapults, arrestor gear or steam plant!!!
Possible inclusion of an electric cat. in the future.
This will be the largest warship ever operated by The Royal Navy!
Right now my scanner is down but I will try to get a couple of pictures in here later this week.
She's a very attractive Lady!

When I look at the images for the new RN carriers it seems someone has blown the dust off the Malta class plans and chucked on some modern electronics and AA and re-presented them.:costumes:

Hi Collin;
Well I can't disagree with you on that; but its nice to see that the RN has finally decided to address the inadequacies of the Invincible Class as demonstrated in the Falklands. And it has only taken 25 years to do it!
Judging by recent history; I'll bet you 2 "virtual beers" that she doesn't "taste the salt" till 2012! :costumes:

I remember the Oriskany well. She was part of PacFleet in the 1950's when I flew Banshee's off the old USS WASP CVA 18.
(God be with the days.)
The Hornet is a nice museum at Alameda, BTW. The WASP borrowed her bow once after a nasty collision in Mid Atlantic with a Tin Can, the Hobson.
I'll check my logs sometime, but if memory serves, I landed on The Big O once while she was operating with our Task Force.

How long has it taken to get the Typhoon into frontline service? I'm not even sure if it is, is it?
